Are game developers neglecting single player for multiplayer?

I read the thread linked to.

Someone said 'First Person Shooters need a multiplayer component because they tend to have short, shallow stories and gameplay otherwise.'

I have no problem with multiplayer gaming whatsoever. Where I have the problem is when a multiplayer game gets a hasty single player campaign made for it to 'justify' it outside its multiplayerness.

If you can't do a damn single-player mode right, don't bother. It's clearly not that important to you. Take the damn development time and make an awesome multiplayer experience instead, rather than spend time half-assing the game.

If you can do -both- wonderfully, then do so. But don't make a half-ass game to justify a total 'package'.

That new FPS without the dedicated whatever is supposed to have like a 5 hour campaign.

Fuck that bullshit.
Fuck that bullshit so hard.

Dragon Age, on the other hand, is supposed to take something like 80 hours to play through, plus replay value.
'Course, it's got no multiplayer (not that that matters.)

I guess the answer is: Yes, some of them do, which is why I ignore their games.
Seriously? MW2 is a fps. Please find me a game of the fps genre that takes longer than ~8 hours to finish. MW2's single player was by far the best I've ever played. It didn't overstay its welcome and felt like a badass action film with a gnarly ending and I can't wait for the next instalment. The multi-player isn't nearly as bad as people say it is, and that's where it has its replay value anyway.

Oh and don't forget, you're comparing an RPG to an FPS for single-player replay value, that in itself is kinda retarded.

Even god-tier developer Valve is neglecting single for multiplayer, we get L4D2 one year after the first one but still haven't heard any word on Ep.3

Yeh, Multiplayer seems to be the main focus now. But there's still a bunch of single-player only games which are heaps of fun.

Developers generally go where the public goes. Right now Multiplayer FPS games are all the rage, so that's where FPS developers like Bungie and IW are focusing their attention. Even the longest campaign in the world can't hold a candle to the length and replay value of a good online FPS game. I have 40+ days played in CoD4. What single player could ever hope to come even remotely close to that number?
