Games have come a long way in a relatively short time, and how we think of them has changed more than with almost any other medium, games have gone from simply being fun and challenging, Pac-man and Tetris for example, to immersive experiences capable of eliciting real emotions from the player.
Fifteen years ago people would have laughed at you for suggesting games were art, now, well only most of them will laugh at you.
So while we can all agree games have come a long way, do you think it's for the better?
Do you love how games are evolving, or do you wish they would give up the delusions of grandeur and let you get back to stomping on goombas?

I do like how games have been evolving, although I'd like to see a little more originality.

I think we are going the right way. I'd like to see more adult gaming though.

I'd like to see the industry take more chances and show more original content, even if based on a certain genre. The FPS has been taken to brave new worlds with Fallout 3 and CoD4:MW, and now it's up to developers to find the next environment to explore and different stories to tell. Games like Haze aren't going to cut it anymore.

No. We need a proper, difficult adventure game like Donkey Kong 64.
Loved that game.

I agree with some of the above posts, it's indeed going well, but I'd like some originality too.

I think the changes that have happened over the last couple of decades are excellent. There's so much more diversity and effort put into a (good) game now to make it a memorable experience.

However it does get to the point where it's being pushed a bit too far into the 'reality' sector. I cannot stand games with 'gritty realism'. It's boring. Boring boring boring. Reality is boring. That's why we play games. If developers continue down the route of making their games with grey/brown/green graphics and a control setup that requires several combinations of buttons to shoot/reload/scratch your arse in the name of 'realism' then some fans will lose interest.

Otherwise the progression has been outstanding and the way we look at games is constantly changing as developers continue to innovate. We just need to bring the challenge back up a little bit and we'll be streamlined towards greater games in future.

Oh yeah and no more WWII games for the love of fucks sake.

The whole idea of games becoming more inmmersive and getting emotions out of people is fantastic.

The ending to HL2 Episode 2 is the high point to date IMO.

I think someone needs to make a WW2 game, but instead of another american one, you should be a nazzi. It would be awesome. And original.

And yes it IS a good thing that games are geting more immersive and touching.

No I do not think so.

The current trend among game developers consists of sacrificing fun for the sake of realism, something which no game designer should ever do, under any circumstances. I'm loathe to beat the dead horse that is GTA4 anymore, but it's a shining (literally, the only lighting in the game comes from bloom effects) example of everything wrong with the games industry.

The reason for this, is because a fair chunk of gaming's target audience are the macho fratboy demographic who are ashamed of liking video games, and so demand games that don't look like games, so they can convince themselves they're not playing with toys.

I enjoy that gaming has evolved a fair bit since I was a kid but even then I feel that today's games have lost their difficulty and their originality.

The most (or one of) the most popular genres now is the FPS and that's all well and good but I'd much prefer playing something away from the first person perspective. Fact is, beyond fighting games I've not found much in the way of enjoyment.

But that's just personal preference.
Overall, I think as gaming is growing more and more popular (and at times family oriented) we're bound to see games that were released with very little effort put into their development just to make a quick buck and to please the crowd of folks not able to distinguish good from bad and people who are brand new to gaming in general.

Also, I agree with "I'm getting bored of realism" statements. Can we please have games like Halo (setting-wise), not COD-wise?

Also, Medal of Honor, Britian exists y'know.

It's true that a lot of games are becoming easier so as not to alienate anyone since games are now a lot more expensive to develop and they want as big an audience as possible, as for originality, as with any medium as it grows longer in the tooth new ideas befome fewer and further between, it's not that developers these days are less creative it's just that a lot of the good ideas have already been done.

Why is it so trendy to hate on AAA titles. I think GTA 4, DESPITE its flaws (no Roman I don't want to hang out), is everything that is RIGHT in video games. We get A list voice talent, millions of dollars in developing budget, and around 40 hours of fun for $60. That is QUALITY entertainment at an affordable price. The game had its problems, but it was still a ton of fun and chock full of original content. Sylocat and all you other jaded, pretentious "gamers" get off your high horse. There is a reason games like GTA, Fallout, and Halo do well and here is a hint; its not because they are not fun to play. I also loved the graphics; not every game should look like Wii Bowling or World of Warcraft. Also, its not very realistic to be shot a bunch of times and then be good as new by eating a hotdog. Its not very realistic to find assault weapons lying around in the street. I think that about sums that up.

I think its great that the gaming industry is splitting into more niche industries. I don't think you can really compare the Wii crowd and the 360/PS3 crowd anymore. I think the Pc crowd is/has started really branching out too. There are a LOT more genres in games now then there were 20 years ago when I started gaming. It is like the music, movie, or book industry before it where its taken some time to grow. There is definitely something for everyone; the 50 year old housewife, the 10 year old schoolkid, the fratboy meatheads, and the pretentious geeks like us who spend lunch breaks trolling forums like the Escapist.

Anyone who says there is not enough originality in games anymore needs to buy Left 4 Dead. What a great, original twist on an established genre. We also lucky to have great original plots and stories like Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed. We have new advances in even casual gaming with the Wii (even though snood will ALWAYS be my fav casual game and no motion sensor controls will EVER take that away from me) and Rock Band/Guitar hero.

It has never been a better time to be a gamer.

We're evolving but are we evolving in the right direction? I don't know there have been some good games and some bad.Like the past wasn't the same , where all games from the past a CLASSIC?I think not. Some old games are classics ...some new games will become classics with time.
