Holy christ how many of you people are going on about 'what a Gunblade is' but your so far from the truth? (extreme geek mode = on)
A gunblade in ff8 does not shoot a bullet at all. When you pull the trigger, it causes a reverberation down the sword giving the sword strike extra damadge. That's all.
In that sence, no they arn't plausable because while it does add extra force to the strike theoretically, unless your really strong and able to hold the sword firmly the whole way, you will lose grip of it and things will go tits up.
I guess maybe if you have someone ready to kill they have no way of getting out of their certain death , don't waste your bullets on him/her and use the bayonett
MOUT and FISH-Operations use bayonettes to this day. The british forces in Afghanistan use them when they fight in the ditches. Sometimes it's just faster and better to stab the guy in front of you than shoot him (eg when you're really close and your clip is empty)
No.
First of all, every extra weight can throw off your aim.
Second, try grabbing a rifle with both hands if you have a blade stuck under it and see what happens (hint: you'll lose your fingers)
The curved handle would make it a pain to use as a sword never mind a gun

The Gunblade is not a bayonet.
It's a gun that's also a sword at the same time. Unfortunately, it's prone to fail at being a gun. I'm pretty sure I read an article about this somewhere...
Note that for you to use a gun with any sort of efficiency, you'd probably need to aim it. Holding it like a handgun would be too unwieldy, since the weight of the blade makes the front end too heavy (unless said blade is made of ultra-light, but ultra strong and durable, probably forged by UltraJoe). You probably could, given enough arm strength, or if your target is not all that far. But if that's the case, you'll probably do more damage if you just slash him. Plus, you can't aim it like you would a gun that is held by two hands (like a rifle or shotgun).
The blade is useless outside of close combat. If you have the ranged capacity of a firearm, you avoid close combat. Even in a melee you attemp tp shoot the other guy. Why?
Because bullet is faster than any dodge. Bullet is faster than any strike. And the bullet is far more deadly than a cut.
The extra weight of the blade would simply increase the weigh of the weapon and throw off the sights or make it front heavy (making it close to impossible to aim with unless prone): All in all you greatly reduce your offensive long-range capabilities for minor melee capability which you should never even need.
Bayonets were useful when it took twenty seconds to reload a gun which was four feet long. We now have automatic and semi-automatic weapons and some idiot with a carbine or even a pistol is going to ruin the day of even the most hardened soldier who insists on using a bayonet, even in close quarters.

I read somewhere that the purpose of the gun bit is not to shoot a bullet; when you're midway through carving up the enemy's flesh you pull the trigger and the cartridge containing just powder will detonate sending a violent shockwave through the blade section. I don't know how this would work in real life but I'm pretty sure the addition of a vibration is not enough to justify the loss of control caused by such a ridiculous grip - if I'm being carved up by a huge knife I doubt I'd care much about additional trauma of a little shaking.
It would be a shitty gun and an impossibly hard to fight with sword. It would be heavy like a sword, so aiming would be difficult. And you would have to use the gun's handle to swing the blade.
OT Im a bit of a history of weapons expert and less then two feet away from me is a book with all sorts of combination weapons in it. I can tell you now the gun-blades get their asses kicked by Gun mace's.
