The question here is are horror film's now a days just blood, gore and girls getting their tops off (not that theres anything wrong with that.) I mean what happen to the suppense and tension that use to exist in earlier films. So anyway what am asking is what was the last horror film you seen that actually scared you? Or at least entertained you.

The 1st nightmare on elm street that was a scary film but then again I was only 9 when I saw it.

Yes, and the ghost flicks that aren't gore are just heavily made-up chinese/japanese people making weird sounds.

It's been about 6 months since I watched it, but I can recommend the movie "Shrooms". It's really weird and genuinely frightening at times. Most of the movie doesn't rely on gore or jump-out scares, but puts a rather strong emphasis on surreal set pieces, an overall dirty/gritty ambience and smothering atmosphere.

Like many things in this world, Horror seems to be a term that is open to perspective. Yes, I believe that AMERICAN horror, nowadays, revolves completely around the gore and shock-and-awe factors (which literature buffs like myself will realize is Terror, not Horror). Japanese horror, contrastingly, is slow to build and much, much odder. A great example of this would be the original Ring and Grudge, and the Junji Ito manga Uzumaki (a personal favorite).

This has not always been the case, but with the introduction and success of movies like Saw and Hostel, it has become the norm for horror movies to seem to have this minimum requirement of blood, guts, dismemberment, and the like.

Most of them are now, But you can still find a shining gem of pure horror-y goodness in all the gore of the other movies
And then there are the movies so bad, they're funny, like The Unborn

Am I the only one who is finding most current horrer movies funny?

Seriously, I laughed my ass off when I saw Friday the 13th (the current remake)

I don't like horror movies, but I certainly think that there is a lot more people can do than just throw gore in our faces, like SAW... I didn't find that scary at all, it was just gruesome. Nah, I think psychologically terrifying a person is a much better way of scaring people.

Japan, I believe, does horror very well... it may not be well known in the West, but Japan is infact notorious for its seriously scary stories, its part of its history!

Kind of funny how explicit blood, guts, and gore don't make an impact at all while some images in Japanese horror movies manage to creep you out without any blood at all.

I agree with this. *Nerd moment* Also I couldn't believe they ripped off something from Friday the 13th part 2, a better film. Although it is satisfying to see some stupid/naive/drugged up teens get whats coming to them. Them being murdered I mean, not that one sex scene

I quite like the first SAW, it had an element of surprise atmosphere and I don't that it was gore-heavy... unlike the rest of the SAW films

Horror movies have never scared me even when I watched them as a little child in the eighties. They've made me jump but that's usually because of a loud noise or a quick cut. I laughed my arse off watching saw 4 in the cinema. (that got me a few odd looks)

Most "horror" films these days are just poor substitues for the early splatterfests of the video nasty era except they don't actually qualify as splatterfests.

I've also never had a nightmare either even though I often dream about death and monsters, they are pleasant to me. :S

The first Saw was probably one of the best representations of what can be done with a horror movie in current times.

i know exactly what you mean, it's like story was thrown out of the window and replaced with hacksaws and female nudity

the best horrors are the old ones, which, though naff and often done with plasticine, have decent storylines and amiable characters!

i reckon it's just movie-makers experimenting with special effects and jazz, and while i agree it's awesome what they can do (sure, it's my bro's job but I'm not biased :p) but it just seems to me they should give more consideration to the writers (sure, it's MY job, but really, I'm not biased Xp)

The only horror movie to scare me was IT back when I was a child a killer clown scared the shit out of me. Yes horror movies are purely just gorefests, nothing really original these days.. that's why I rarely watch horror films.

I think i get that your saying and my answer is i dont know i have not really watched many new horror movies, the last one i watched was planet torror and that is not exactly a new movie and that is over the top, ace movie though should watch if you can or if you have great.

I think another problem with new horror movies, hell all movies nothing to very little is origional. not to say that is bad but with a load of remakes and remakes of remakes, surly someone out there could go out there way to creat an origional monster, in an origional settling without a load of the cleachays we all know and either hate or love...or dont care about.

they all depend on gore now. what happened to movies like 2001 a space odyssey where the machine takes over not terminator style where you can kill it but just being alone and trying so desperately to get back to civilization as the machine tortures you with words rather than with beatings
