Are old games still playable?

Deus Ex and Morrowind works fine for me on Windows Vista, Kotor required some minor tweaking before it worked so yeah they are still playable. If you mean playable as in "accessible" then Deus Ex holds up quite well today if you disregard the ugly graphics, Morrowind have a terrible interface and Kotor have a slow and boring start but once you manages to get to the second planet the game becomes great fun.

They're all playable, but the visual barrier is pretty high. I'd mention Morrowind as one of your stated examples. While that title still is playable, the low-poly models and terrain along with the fairly muddy vanilla texture make for difficult immersion. What doesn't help is the omission of the compass or of map markers. I don't mind not having fast travel as an option, but I absolutely need a detailed map to get my bearings.

As for Deus Ex; I'd consider it as playable, but you have to remember that the stealth, hacking and combat mechanics all feel a bit rough, compared to what we have available nowadays. They were cutting-edge back when it first came out and it was justifiably called the game of the year by some - but obsolescence waits for even the most celebrated of titles.

Then there's KotOR. It's a BioWare Star Wars RPG. You should not need more encouragement. *steals Peter Lorre's voice for a sec*

Well, some of my all time favorite games are old games from the PSOne and PS2. If I were to give you a complete list of all my favorite games, there would be plenty from those systems. I might even throw in a game from the Sega Genesis while I'm at it. Are old games playable? Yes. Very much so. And some of the games you listed I either know are quite fun from experience, or simply hear nothing but good things.

The real question is: Do you enjoy the game? If so, it doesn't matter about the graphics or the system. Good games are good. Just like with any other medium.

Yeah, they're playable just fine, as long as you aren't obsessed with graphics. Though KOTOR's text definitely hurt my eyes at times. You'll probably need to adjust your resolution.

Deus Ex: Never played it, so I don't know.

KOTOR: Works fine. Save for some crashes here and there, but that can be fixed. I recommend turning the prerendered cutscenes off. It seems to crash mostly on those.

Morrowind: Works fine.

I've only played KotOR because a friend gave it to me last year, but I still liked it. I've also played the first Half-Life recently and that is still a good game.

They're probably all still great, great design is the sort of thing that rings through the ages thankfully, but I'm inclined to assume you're perhaps actually talking about if they can actually RUN.

In which case, all versions of Windows are backwards compatible and if they still don't work then consult ModDB.

Basically this. If the game is good enough the graphics shouldn't matter, I regularly fire up X-com, I have deus ex installed and did play it some but I wasn't really in the mood to replay it, I played it far too much when it was new :p. Kotor....I only played it for the first time when it was old and still loved it, so its as worth a replay as any other. Especially given the fact you can play in 2 different styles and get decently different endings to it.

Are you kidding? Why would they not be playable? Graphics? So what? They are the greatest games of their time and are still way up there in best games ever.

But you know what? I finished Morrowind the day before Skyrim came out, but I haven't played Kotor for a bit. BRB installing.

1.) I found Deus Ex to be a but tricky to play (Ps2 version ftw) but once I got adjusted to the controls, the game worked wonderfully. The exploration and character customization make the game one of a kind. A+ in my book.

2.) You're asking if Morrowind holds up in this generation? Stop asking silly questions and go pick it up right now! It's great! It's my personal favorite E.S. game. It was charming, the atmosphere was great and it's just fun to play.

3.) I have not played KOTOR. I should probably buy it sometime.

Three games I love don't run anymore, because of Windows 7. But on an old PC, the gaming experience hasn't tarnished, at least to me:

Spellforce 2
Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri
Homeworld Cataclysm

What did tarnish for me though was Monster Rancher 4.

1. I tried to play Deus Ex a year or two ago, but I could never get into it.
Was far to dated for my tastes.

2. Still holds up rather well, but you might find your experience severely tainted by Oblivion and/or Skyrim.
Combat is not very good, but I was never really bothered by it.
Also, the graphics are obviously dated.

3. I have never played KOTOR, so sadly I can offer no insights.

1) Deus Ex - Old and dated - but given a chance its awesome.
2) Morrowind - Very hard to start with and has its issues, but so much fun and indepth story if given a chance. Better than both Oblivion/Skyrim in my opinion.
3) KOTOR - This and the sequel are excellent....not played in a long time but i loved them.

Now for Morrowind (maybe Deus Ex - was it modded) why cant they release them on the 360 - a fully modded version with all the best mods. I played a modded Morrorwind a few years a go with extra birds, fish and farm animals. New missions and graphics to the background. Was amazing, so much life and experience added to it.

To the OP (and anyone interested). Deus Ex will run fine on modern systems, but it does require some extra work. The game runs on the Unreal engine, which has some issues with modern multi-core CPUs that cause various glitches and slowdown problems. To solve these you're going to need a few fixes and a custom renderer.

You can find all of it here, along with a guide on how to get it to work [http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/].

It also gives you more graphics options like higher resolutions, aspect ratios, etc. As a bonus, it should be compatible with various mods like Shifter [http://www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1] (tweaks the gameplay and adds some extra features and items), HD texture packs and The Nameless Mod [http://thenamelessmod.com/editors_choice/] (free mod and pretty much an entire game by itself).

Hope this helps.

As far as Morrowind and KOTOR concerns, they should run without any extra attention beyond perhaps running them in XP compatibility mode. I haven't had any problems at least.

I can only comment on deus ex.
Yes it is still fun, its sad to see that even now its rare that a game will give you so many options to complete a mission :/

- You must be able to forgive the graphics and absolutley retarded AI though.

KOTOR 100% yes. Get it for Xbox though, unless you want to deal with tons of bugs. PC may be better, but I got fed up with it. Still, only cost me $5 and my innocence. Great game though.

I've gone through FF: Tactics and FF7 with no issue on occasion, so go ahead for those guys.
My experience with FF:Tactics is quite different. I just bought it off PSN and have never played it before. Its not the graphics or the gameplay that annoy me as much as the 30 page tutorial. I can't get myself to concentrate, but then the learning curve gets in my way at about the fourth main-battle (in the slums I believe). I do understand the basics, but I am having trouble with the job system (and I am sure I sound like an idiot right about now for not understanding Tactical RPGs other than Fire Emblem and Valkyria Chronicles)

Deus Ex worked last time I tried it on 32 bit Win 7 Ultimate, similar for KOTOR. Morrowind I run on my laptop on 32 bit Win 7 Starter.

However I must admit it was a biatch to get KOTOR to run and I had to turn off all the soft shadows, grass, motion blur.

It's still possible but somewhat of a headache. For 64 bit systems, no idea. In my experience XP compatibility mode didn't do all too much, but it never hurts to try.

If you mean are they playable as games, absolutely.

As for the technical side of things, DOSBox helps alot with the origional Deus Ex, old Dos programs usually had unreasonable memory requirements DOSBox allows you to set whatever environment the program needs. As for programs designed under the Windows 95/98 reign of terror, your better off looking for public patches for modern operating systems. A few games have them available, but even in those its a 50/50 weather it will work. As for anything in the XP to recent range, you shouldn't have any difficulties that can't be solved through compatability mode.
