Are PCs still really less reliable than consoles?

As long as you know what you're doing your computer is going to be fine for ages. Even if something goes down it's a 5 minute trip to the box with a screwdriver. And PC's themselves never go down, it's always only 1 thing that goes on the fritz so only 1 thing to replace.

In my personal opinion i would still say that my console is more reliable than my PC.
In terms of playing games the console is generally more reliable as you don't need to install and you don't need to worry about "Insert disk 2" or even "You need direct X to play this".
I can't tell you how many times i've had a game and its said i needed direct X or abode this or even more memory so it can install. (It then uninstalls the game there and then)

In terms of lifetime, even though i have lost one xbox, if you know how to use your PC and not wreck it then you'll be safe and thats the same with the xbox. If you don't use it appropriately then you're screwed.

Agreed.

*sigh* after that debate you still haven't learned anything have you?
Of course I have.

I learned that PC fanboys are even more fervent in their mindless devotion to their chosen platform than console fanboys.

Than you for reminding me of that though.

It's chalk and cheese.
Wine and cheese imo. They go well together to provide more then one style of gaming, some people only like one or the other, you can enjoy both but not chew both at the same time.

Using my PC has always been like traversing a tangled jungle of incompatibilities and minor tribulations. I always get it to do what I want, but sometimes it takes some doing. My console, despite its apparent conscious desire to break, is still in some ways a much more reliable machine. Day to day, it does what I ask when I ask.

The gap is closing, sure, but you still need a catapult and bicycle helmet to cross it.

EDIT: Also, I don't think the point that PCs are reliable because they can be maintained with a technology degree and constant maintenance is a strong one.

If you're a serious gamer and not one of these cop-out, cry-poor fanboys, then you have an awesome PC, a laptop, an oversized TV and at least one console from each of the last four generations.
I am not a serious gamer? I feel so liberated right now!

Where's my cocaine? I feel a binge coming on.

Wouldn't it just depend on the components of the PC? I mean I don't know a great deal about it, but some graphics cards have a tendency to overheat more than others. So if consoles contain all the same things then they may be more reliable than certain PCs and less so than others.
Or am I completely missing the point here?

Last time I checked I didn't have a technology degree, but my PCs have always been extremely reliable.
It's just a matter of maintenance, and I'll readily admit that a PC needs more of that.
As for incompatibility issues, never had many of those. Most of the games I own have worked right out of the box, installing without significant problems.

(ok, 1 exception. Dark Reign 1 on a Windows 98SE or later computer, it installs Dx3, regardless of the Direct X version present. I had 7 or 8 installed at the time, quick reinstall of a modern Direct X later and everything worked again.)

In short Noooooooooooooooooooooooo(bah you all know, so i won't go on). I had my PC for 5 or 6 years until i replaced it for a better one, and it never required maintenance... Well only once when it crashed but it was my fault

My post wasn't directed at you. I was clearly exaggerating. I was responding to those in this very thread who claim that a lot of experience and know-how is necessary to maintain a PC. They went so far as to say that someone without this experience shouldn't attempt it. And I don't think that's a strong indication of reliability at all. Quite the opposite.

In the end I think it all comes down to persanal opinion, since the PC gamer will deffend de the PC and console gamers will deffend the consoles.

I know the post wasn't directed at me specifically, just that the assumption of requiring a tech degree was wrong. (and it appears I missed the original post for that, my apologies for singling yours out)

As for using a PC for gaming without experience, well you need to start somewhere (and that includes myself). I'll admit that a PC needs a little more care and thinking from its user, but usually common sense will see you through most issues/quirks.

*Snort* You know what your posting of that forum screenshot means? That fallout 3 for pc is bugged to hell. It has nothing to do with the reliability of the pc as a platform, and everything to do with the quality of coding done for the game.
