My sisters Blackberry was recently stolen, and the petty criminal used it to put a vulgar, retarded message up on her Facebook wall only a few hours later...

That means that the phone is still turned on, and sending out a signal, which means that the cell company knows where it is, which means they're just walking around with stolen property that's literally leaving a trail for the police to follow.

They obviously didn't steal it for the cash, because if they did it would be pawned off to some shmuck already, or at least turned off, so they're doing it for shits and giggles, which makes even less sense because there's no payoff at all... unless you count being beaten to within an inch of your life by a VERY angry woman and her friends a payoff...

Now, it IS only a phone, so it's not like the Fifth Infantry Division will be mobilized to find it, but seriously, are people (Petty criminals, more accurately) so BLOODY STUPID these days that they don't even know to either turn off, or get rid of, whatever it is they stole if it's TELLING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE??

This pretty much sums it up. Petty criminals are often act on impulse they don't feel there's any other way to get something, so what they do is generally poorly thought out. Or in the case of the OP, they're just out for some laughs, and people who commit crimes for laughs also do not plan very well.

I generally hit report when I see one-work replies but ya know what? In this instance I'm inclined to agree 100%. Yes, people are that stupid. Other idiots include the people who've been stealing and, selling retail copies of Modern Warfare 3. Not ALL of them, just the ones who will be playing on Xbox Live because they're too Brain Dead (or Dead-Alive if, like me, you're an American...wait, wrong thing) to turn off Xbox Live/ PSN and play offline (and with certain other precautions like using a temporary profile that will be deleted and never taken online)

I never said I would be doing the beating. In fact, I'm too far away too even consider it. My sister, on the other hand, has a very bad temper and is quite capable of beating said individual half to death because they felt it necessary to steal her greatest connection to everything she does on a daily basis.

Thank you for sparing me the work of typing exactly that. Although I still find it hard not to be amazed by some stupid things people can do. But stealing a phone and keeping it on and with the original simcard is not one of them, that's only mildly stupid compared to sh*t I see every day.

However, you ignore the flip side of this: people are surprisingly stupid about securing their property. Here's an experiment--go to a large, full parking lot and try to open some car doors. A surprising amount of them will be unlocked. That number increases dramatically if you do this in a neighborhood.

People leave their valuables out in the open all the time, which is probably what your sister did. It's incredibly easy to steal stuff, you just have to think about it.

No explanation really, they steal thinking no one would be smart enough to catch them. Also didn't plan it out obviously thinking they can just use it as their own not considering the phone company, police, or your sister's friends being able to get a hold of the phone overall.
