Are people too hard on smokers?

It's not the smoke/cigarette itself, it's what the general smoker is doing. Don't stand in the doorway, puffing the cigarette. Especially if it's a restaurant and you work there.

If I want to go into your place and have lunch, I don't want to go through 5 people standing in a cluster next to the doors, completely making my nose and tastebuds disinterested in your delicious cuisine.

Reply to Sasha:

I completely agree! (by the way, I also just set up this account to reply to this forum, lol)

Just one thing, though, it has actually been shown that kids who live in a household where people smoke indoors have a higher chance of getting asthma.

And you're also very right about how it's impossible to quit for someone else. I've tried quitting for three different non-smoking boyfriends, only to start smoking again after ending those relationships. To avoid this situation from now on, I'll only date smokers.

Thanks dee,

I didn't know that about the asthma! But I am usually skeptical and would tend to think cause and effect.. did being around smoke cause asthma, did being around smoke cause asthma to become more apparent, or possibly people with asthma are just plain more likely to live with someone who smokes (of the cross-section of people in the study). Likely not the case, it is possible that being around smoke causes asthma, but you never know the circumstances of a particular study, especially when the government feels pressure to give results in favor of non-smokers. I had asthma when I was young and my dad smoked, but I never saw him do it (he would leave the house for every smoke b/c my mom was a non-smoker). Now I smoke but I grew out of my asthma probably 8-9 years ago and I started smoking 9 years ago (a coincidence most likely).

I totally agree trying to date someone who smokes when you don't or vice versa is difficult. My husband smokes as well, but I would like us both to quit before we have kids (not because of 2nd hand smoke but b/c of example). That I think is the hard thing- if we quit one at a time it would be impossible to handle the smell on the other person, and if we quit together we would probably end in divorce haha! Not really, but you know what I mean!
