RPGs haven't been dying out. Have you tried Tales of Vesperia? Its pretty good. Sure it looks similar to Eternal Sonata (Which annoyed me to no end, so I may never complete it.), but its got a proper story.

I mention that in addition to the many brilliant games mentioned above.

If we are mentioning older games like Oblivion, then I should also mention Enchanted Arms.

?NOO are u serious there are still great rpgs out there fallout was rated the top game of the year if u watch xplay i dont see that as it dieing out but i think everyone here is going to tell u they arnt dieing out
I would try to fix your horrendous grammar, but your avatar is just too awesome.

OT: I'm pretty sure there was this game called fallout 3, and another one called oblivion. Actually, no, they didn't come out, and I'm just imagining that the rpg genre is still alive and well.

Does anyone else feel this way? Cause there hasn't been a decent RPG for quite a few years. The only recent RPG I can think of that made an impression on me was Lost Odyssey.

Oh, if anyone does think this. Do you reckon the new Final Fantasy installments will revive this genre?

Over and Out.
Bleh, no. Unless you meant JRPG's, in which case, probably, but less be honest, 16 hours of cutscene per 1 hour of gameplay probably never was a good idea.

I think the modern RPG is evolution, not necessarily dying out - Fallout 3, and Mass Effect, for example. Of course, some of the purists don't accept them because you don't need an advanced mathematics degree to play them.

In what way are RPGs dying out? Last I checked, TES and the Fallout series would quite popular, as well as Aion and WoW.

Mass Effect? Oblivion? Fallout 3? If we're going to stretch 'quite a few years' - Morrowind? Baldur's Gate II? Knights of the Old Republic? The original Fallouts?

I call pickiness on this thread.

I so hope that RPGs (including J-) don't die out. I like my video games with a story and RPGs in my opinion are the best way to get it (I have nothing against text-based adventures or point-and-clicks, though. They're good too).

But it looks to me that RPGs are going strong. They won't completely die out unless casual games and the Wii completely take over.

Oh yes, they've been dying out. Just like PC gaming, console gaming, hardcore gaming, the FPS genre, rock music, art, and so on.

Why is it that people seem to always think certain things are dying out, when in reality they're just the same as always? Is it some sort of overwhelming need for drama or something?

Oblivion and Fallout 3 was good, but the story lines in the two weren't good in my opinion.

I'm not an expert on the whole thing by the way. Just wondering what other people think.
Not sure where your getting your ideas, RPGs are more mainstream and popular than ever.

People who would have NEVER touched an RPG are now spending 100+ hours on them.
and more and more games are taking RPG elements.

RPGs will never die out. (neither will Final Fantasy) [well except if life dies out altogether]
even if all technology is gone, along with all the games (ahh blasphemy!!), people will still be able to Role Play, and as long as there is Role Play there will be a way to turn it into a Game... hence RPG. :)
Even the old school RPGs are still fun to play, and will always have some replayable value. As far as being in a mainstream type of light, its just like anything else. If its not popular now it will be again later (except for disco... lol maybe).

I think rpg's in general, including console and table top, tend to go through cycles of popularity. fallout 3 had pretty good rpg elements, as have many others, but I dont think the industry is at its high at the moment.

I'm suddenly reminded of a gaming booklet from the early nineties I found when cleaning out my house. It said that adventure games were the way of PC releases, due to new technologies that were able to make graphics consistently better and bring about more interesting formats of gameplay, and RPGs were dying out because there weren't any good ones in the immediate future and the elements that made them appealing were being absorbed by other genres.

I just couldn't get over how just flipping around the genres made both predictions 100% accurate.
