Oblivion and Fallout 3 was good, but the story lines in the two weren't good in my opinion.

I'm not an expert on the whole thing by the way. Just wondering what other people think.
Not sure where your getting your ideas, RPGs are more mainstream and popular than ever.

People who would have NEVER touched an RPG are now spending 100+ hours on them.
and more and more games are taking RPG elements.
I love Oblivion and Fallout 3 but I think the game that brought back the Western RPG to mainstream audience was Fable.

Fable 2 is not an RPG, or a game at all for that matter.

Fable is not a good RPG, far too simplistic. Just look at how shallow the character interactions are.

It's funny you should mention this. I am currently paying Eternal Sonata, and not enjoying it very much at all. The graphics look pretty, at least until the animations drag things down by seeing very amateur and poorly executed.

What bothers me too is that it's full of the same old junk JRPGs have been spewing at us for decades, including a lot of characters repeating information as if they're trying to explain the story to slow people, and a lot of characters that fill the usual molds (cutesy one, shy one, tough one out to prove him/herself, reluctant leader, ambiguous guy that tried to be as obviously ambiguous as possible, mature woman with deeper voice, younger male/female with screechy voice... crap... you get the idea). They tried to reinvent turn based combat, but frankly I am not a fan of how they executed things here. It's really chock full of stuff I either dislike or don't remotely care about.

I hope Vesperia is better.

Why did you think I said Fable 2, I said Fable (yes there was a fable before 2), and it was very popular.

Obviously.
but when a second comes out, saying "fable" refers to the series.

I don't necessarily think RPGs are dying out.

A lot of games that have been released lately have relied on RPG-type elements. If by RPG you mean your typical game where you decide plenty of stats and run around implementing your overly done strength on enemies, your huge spells or even your speed to dodge everything and its mother, then I would stand by what I said. Fallout 3 was done in this way, and come on, that game is still somewhat popular amongst XBOX and PC players.

If by RPG you meant role-playing-game, a game in which you play a role, then almost every game you can play shoves you into an RPG. Call of Duty 4, you're McTavish. Assassin's Creed, you're Altair. Fallout 3, you're...you.

I think my case has been rested.

Not to be an ass, but I think thats more of a psuedo RPG. Ah well.

I don't think they're dying. I'm still in love with Oblivion. *Cradles it in his arms.*
Action Adventure game is what it really is if one wants to get pedantic. And yes, RPGs certainly aren't dying at all. There are great RPG titles everywhere, just stop being so damned picky.

Honestly? I don't think it's a concern yet. It's true that most of the big games in the recent past and near future haven't been RPGs, but I agree that this might cycle around and possibly when that happens we'll have some nice deep stories to dive into.

And if that doesn't happen I'll just have to say 'fuck it' and go dig through the used games and find all the old RPGs I never got to play.

BTdubs, BioShock really was more an FPS, and so was Fallout 3, IMO. Oblivion and Mass Effect definitely get props though.

Bioshock isn't an RPG... is it?
The last RPG I can remember enjoying other than Fallout 3 would have to be final fantasy 2. The new FF games are like movies with a few interactive parts....
Well actually, I don't own Bioshock. I have played before with some other guys and maybe I picked it up at an RPG'ish part. Though I must laugh and agree with your comment about the new FFs.

RPG's are hardly dying. If anything, they are growing.

So you equate dying out with "im being picky"? Just cos there havent been any you liked doesnt mean theyre all disappearing.
How is it that whenever I go to a thread, you're the first person who posts? I just wrote my post 20 seconds ago, only to find that you posted before me.
Obviously he's a ninja.

OT: RPGs aren't dying out. In fact, if you look at the line up of video game releases many of them are RPGs or have a set up similar to an RPG. They aren't dying out, its just that you're picky when it comes to RPGs.

RPGs are not dieing, actually they are consuming everything else and that's why it's hard to label a game as an rpg anymore. Most games now have "rpg elements" It's not a far stretch to say eventually all games will just be one genre aka action/adventure

The RPG genre is starting to merge with the FPS genre. Most RPGs are now First person, as opposed to it's previous Top-Down (Baldur's Gate), Real Time Strategy (Warcraft 3, Turn Based Strategy (Final Fantasy, and Action-Adventure (Too Human) phases. RPGs aren't a genre on their own, and so, when a new base for the genre becomes popular, they're often unrecognized by RPG fans to be RPGs. They aren't disappearing, they're hiding. Thank Bethesda for making the latest transition, albeit Valve was doing FPRPGs (First Person Role Playing Games) before it was cool...

In your case, you relate RPG to TBS (Turn Based Strategy) games. The reason they're dying out, if they are, is that it was a simple gameplay mechanic designed for more primitive games and engines can support more exciting gameplay nowadays. Turn Based Strategy Games are probably destined for handheld systems... the two most popular franchises in the industry, Final Fantasy and Pokemon are both now on handheld games.

Yes and no. The JRPG is hanging on for dear life right now but may get a breath of fresh air with the release of Final Fantasy 13.

However, the Western RPG is just hitting it's full potential right now, with Bethesda leading the charge with games like Fallout and Oblivion. BioWare's Mass Effect was also a mass success.

BTW can't wait for Mass Effect 2 to come out.

I have to say that you list my biggest problems with that game. That and the plot really goes nowhere. Actually the only thing you credited to the game was the battle system. Even this was taken almost directly form the Tales Of Series.
