What about those people that claim that if you aren't contributing you are costing others happiness? Y'know that guilty of the good you have not done logic?
Such people obviously have too much time on their hands. Instead of lecturing others, they should do more of that fabled "good" of theirs.
As for what I think, I suppose it comes down to what you want for what you give. If you're not very ambitious and are happy with having a little cozy life, and do other stuff instead of pursuing a career that's one thing, but not giving a fuck yet and expecting everything to be done for you is quite another.
Me, long since my teen years, but work is something I do for a living, not something I'd actively pursue my purpose in life with. It's part of my life, but it's not the part that makes or breaks it (forgetting the financial implications of course). But, when I was unemployed for two years, I had to much time on my hands, I was starting to annoy myself, and one's own company is sometimes the worst possible thing if it drags on - not because I was flat broke, but because I woke up in the morning and realized I'm looking at another day I'll be bored by things I used to enjoy, simply because I've been doing them too long just to pass the time.
So yeah, while in no way a careerist/workaholic myself, I don't understand people who can go through life without ever doing any serious work...I'd just drive myself insane by having to hang around myself all the time, with nothing to do.
