I want to start this off by saying that this is more or less something to help my son with some work he's doing in school in response to a recent study. He heard this study and felt something about it seemed very, very wrong. Though only 8 he began putting together a " dare I say thesis" on the subject and asked me if I can help him collect argument's he may have overlooked, and his own survey ti see if this study holds any merit, or was it a " controlled" survey. So, If my fellow, lovely, and manly escapists don't mind, lets see if these " specialists" are right. Could you respond short answers to some questions, followed up with some of your own thoughts on the subject.

children/teens/young adults who spend more than 6 hours a day of electronic interaction ( t.v-games-internet-music-texting) are more likely to become obese, sexually active, smokers, and alcoholics, or other drugs.

I think those "Specialists" are buttheads. All my gamer friends are non-smokers, non-drinkers and not-obese as well. I really don't like to talk to them about their sex lives though.

I think obesity is probably a fair one. I would actually suspect that gamers are considerably less likely to be smokers (who wants to take a smoke break whilst fragging/grinding?). Maybe a marginal lean toward regular drinking but not alcoholics, after all it's nigh on impossible to play games drunk (driving games for example). Drugs; probably on cannabis but probably simply for the age bracket.

1 - I started drinking at roughly the same age most British people do (14!). I'm not an alcoholic, I know my tolerance levels and I don't binge (regularly). Gaming & drinking are almost completely separate things in my life except for the odd can of beer whilst playing a local multiplayer game, but only enjoyed in the same way one would whilst watching a film.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

(Y)

Probably a positive way. Purely from videogames my reactions are far sharper than most non-gamer's. My spatial awareness is very high, from years of navigating 3d environments to detect dangers and rewards.

The internet practically facilitates my job, as it did my studies, and I certainly know more than I would have without it.

Mobile/cell phones are wonderfully useful for organising things and have certainly helped me in tight situations.

I very much doubt I would be able to run 5km 3-4 times a week if it wasn't for portable audio.

Positive.

On a side note, people today seem to want to blame electronics again. I don't really understand why... I mean... almost everyone nowadays (in decently developed countries) has at least a mobile phone.

I would have read books instead. Not that I don't read now but I would have more time to read if I didn't have a computer. Are you over weight/obese? not exceptionally. but let's say yes because I binge.

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue?
4 (pretty significant, since I go on the computer or play video games to distract myself from eating, so I'm not really getting a lot of exercise unless I'm playing DDR.)

do you smoke/formerly? N

do you drink? N

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

I feel it's negative... I'm not a social type, and while internet allows me to connect with other people, it also means I'm not forced to develop social skills either. So I don't.

I'll add my own to be fair to everyone;

AGE: 28

Gender: Female

sexually active? Yes

If yes do you think modern media ( tv,games, music etc) has played a major role in your choice? No, I "experimented" younger, but there was no " digital age" and later held off until I was older, then later falls under adult life...

Are you over weight/obese: No Im in the target weight for my height and active

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? ( 1 being none - 5 being a major factor)

do you smoke/formerly? formerly

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? ( 1 being none - 5 being a major factor)1...it was more influenced by mates in a local pub

do you drink? (y/n) Y

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? ( 1 being none - 5 being a major factor)1 I grew up in Scotland, as a influence...drinking has never crossed my natural tolerance at the heaviest, and never became a " need"

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

to me It's been largely a positive. It has aided me in my chosen fields, allowing me to work with clients all over the world at a quicker pace, It's also helped me keep better communication with family back in the UK after I moved to the states, Gaming has had a role in providing not only myself, but family and friends with social time " as we play quite often together" and has been the root of several buisness ventures.
Watching my own children ( being 3, and 8) I have seen at times small changes in their immediate behavior, most directly due to fatigue, which is simply fixed by cutting them off and making the do something else... this behavior seems to fade gradually with age, and in my opinion, when atleast dealing with children... it is the PARENTS who can help set an impression, and example on " if something is overdoing it" in ways that children will better be able to judge themselves and make smarter choices later on.

Have electronic devices affected your life in a +/- way: I think that my use of PC/TV/games etc. has had little, if any, impact on who I am as a person. I am neither any better off or worse off as a result.

I would say it's 50/50, simply because I've met great people and love to talk to people, so I tend to stay up late and ruin sleep. But at the same time, I know how to get my ass out the house and go hang out with my boyfriend, friends and go to work.

If yes do you think modern media ( tv,games, music etc) has played a major role in your choice? Not at all. I'm a male in his early 20's, it's a natural thing.

Are you over weight/obese? No, I'm also a twig like Rascarin!

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? N/A

do you smoke/formerly? Yes

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? I don't think entertainment/modern media have had any influences on my choices on this subject, I waited til I turned 18 and I felt as though this was my own personal choice to start smoking as I was officially an adult in the eyes of the world, and it was a choice -I- made.

do you drink? Yes

if yes, one to five..how much have the above mentioned activities contributed to the issue? Read above.

do you feel in your own words, that the use of electronics through the course of a day have affected your life in a negative, or positive way?

Sometimes I'll let video gaming get in the way of a few important things, today for example for example I've declined an offer to go hang out and enjoy the rare bit of sun we have in the UK today so I can play Resident Evil 5 some more, or if I'm hungry I'll postpone having a meal and snack for an hour or two just so I can get a bit further in a game.

On a closing note, I'd just like to quote one of my favourite graphic novels, Johnny the Homicidial Maniac [lol] and say:

"Any pile of stunted growth unaware that entertainment is just that and nothing more, deserves to doom themselves to some dank cell, somewhere for having been so stupid!! Movies, Books, T.V, Music - they're all just entertainment, not guide books for damning yourself!"

Not being rude or anything towards you, just felt like it was a good quote x)

Hope my answers help ^^
