I'm sure there are people who dislike them.

I personally own every single game from them that was released on PC, they haven't disappointed me with their games yet, which is remarkable; I did dislike a lot of the recent DLC though.

Not having played everywhere Bioware RPG, I really can't say.
I wouldn't count any of them as unbearable, but I think I had the least fun with the original campaign for Neverwinter Nights 2. The original campaign for the first NWN was also pretty weak, and I didn't care too much for Icewind Dale (if I wanted a dungeon crawler, I'd play Diablo.)
But I enjoy Bioware's work, by and large, and will continue playing their games.

EDIT: So it turns out that neither NWN2 nor Icewind Dale were properly Bioware products. This is something I've been told before, but I apparently need multiple reminders to get that information through my skull. So my vote for worst BioWare RPG goes to the original NWN campaign.

What is the objective unit of measurement of quality?

What really constitutes as bad? It's all a matter of opinion....I've liked every Bioware game I've played,Someone else probably hates them all.it's simply opinion.
No, it's not. I mean, okay, if EVERYTHING is "all a matter of opinion" than nothing can be proven.

There is good. There is crap. And objective analysis of media can be preformed. Note that word "objective" not "subjective". An opinion is subjective, but quality is an objective trait.

Now, (for example) it is my opinion that The Doom Generation is a bad film. That is a subjective statement, however it is based on objective observations about the film (in particular the writing, acting, editing, and cinematography are all pretty terrible (if you care)).

The same rough scheme can be applied to any game or other media form to produce a qualitative evaluation of the work.
As long as one person or even just a group of people like something to them it isn't bad, The world is made up of opinions. It's very hard to paint a black and white picture without it getting a little gray. If you like something you'd consider it good, even if 20 of your friends disliked it, it would still be good to you. Take Morrowind as an example, some people think it's the best game ever, and others consider it boring shoddy and they rag on the combat system, it's a mixed bag. Different people have different tastes and take in every quality differently.

Baldur's Gate was a bad game, the story was good but as far as a game it was bad mechanics paired with a railroady dick DM. If you wanted to go off the map on a different route than what the story had planned you just got killed by an enemy that was far too powerful for you to deal with. It gave the illusion of freedom and a sandbox but in reality it was just a fairly accurate simulation of a bad tabletop RPG session, which is the reason the tabletop version of the hobby is in such decline.
You could go off exploring, after you've gained som levels and gotten some nice equipment. This is one of the reasons I really like Baldur's Gate. After being ass-raped by a gang of ogres or something I'd say: "Just you wait you fuckin' ogres! Just you wait! I'll be back and then I'll kill you! I'll kill you all!!! Muhahahaha!"

When you start of you're basically a kid who never even went out of the fortress, what do you know about fighting monsters? It gave a sense of danger to the world, knowing that some monsters you don't fuck around with! That's something I miss in newer games, like Dragon Age. I really like that game, but it's a bit too easy. I'm running around on Nightmare difficulty and I'm seldom having any problems at all, hell I've had more trouble with the Gnoll Fortress than with the Arch Demon. But anyways, when you finally beat those ogres, it gives a real sense of having progressed, you're not that kid anymore, you're becomming a full-fledged, monster-killing, adventurer!

So yeah, I don't mean to question you're taste or anything. Just felt like sharing my mind, since Baldur's Gate 1&2 are at the top of my favourite games list.

I don't really care for Bioware RPGs. They're fun at first, but they rape you up the ear with dialogue boxes and karma meters. Dialogue boxes and karma meters. Dialogue boxes and reputation meters (ooh, there's a change).

Yeah... the game actually cheats at Pazaak. People have done algorithmic breakdowns of this. I'll agree that it's an addictive little game, and someplace online there's a freestanding ap that will actually play fairly. But, at least in KOTOR1, the AI cheats horrifically at it.
I realise the AI cheats...I used to yell at the screen "no way! thats bullshit!" but I'd still come back for more.

If it were a real casino game it would have to be modified a bit...say be more like texes hold'em where you're dealt 2 cards (card deck consists of cards ranging from -6 to +6, no +/- cards) and those are the cards you can use for that hand. Then it can play like blackjack (with the total being 20 instead of 21) where the dealer deals you the cards and you can either hit, stand or use a card. The goal is to beat the dealer, getting the same gives ur money back, winning gives double your bet or triple if you win with a count of 20.

I think it could work, probably requires further tweaking.

yes yes I know I'm crazy but since bioware has made so many good rpgs, I thought I had to ask
I'd say Mass Effect II was a bad RPG, but in all honesty, it wasn't an rpg.
It was a completely gutted version of the first game catered to the mindless saps of the third person shooter generation.
Way to cater to the masses, Bioware....

I haven't enjoyed any of their games so far, and I have only played Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age. Mass Effect looked good, but it wasn't fun at all. Dragon Age in my opinion was just bad. Took everything good about WoW and shat on it and replaced it with voice acting.

I don't care how good their voice acting is, if the rest of the world sucks. I had no reason to explore, or do anything, for that matter. It was the most unimersive pile of shite.

Everyone complains about Fallout 3's limited voice acting, but at least they got the world right, and the voices are easily tolerable.
Plus, dwarves were American in DA:O. AMERICAN. It just.... no.. really, it doesn't suit dwarves at all. They're Scottish, ok Bioware?

At least Mass Effect seemed alright, just not my kind of thing. Dragon Age, however, was not fun at all, and if a game isn't fun in any way, or I actually do not want to keep playing it, I class it as bad.
KotOR is legendary though, so I need to give that a go.

And you didn't like Garrus? Pistols at dawn, sir!
Yeah Mass Effect was a damn good game and comes third in my list of Bioware favourites after Jade Empire and Dragon Age but the two flaws I mentioned really bugged me. And which one was Garrus? It's been quite a while since I played.

How in the world? Please explain your reasoning seriously, I love that game. ._.
Like I said I'm well aware I'm in the minority but I just didn't find it fun. I guess not liking Star Wars very much it was never going to be my favourite but I didn't really enjoy it at all.

There are going to be a lot of opinions in this thread I disagree with, and a lot of people hating on Bioware for the sake of hating on a popular company that dominates the RPG genre, so I'm going to avoid reading it.

I will say, however, that the Sonic game they made was awful. However, it WAS a Sonic game so I think they get a pass.

The only legitimate Bioware style game that I wasn't fond of was Jade Empire, and that was mostly due to the Eastern themes. It was just too foreign for me, and I'm not a fan of that kind of stylization.

I think they make perfectly fine games.. I dont think they ever go to great and I dont think any have been awful. They have their success model and have run with it since Baldurs Gate, they dropped Dungeons and Dragons because they could never get the ruleset correct and still used the D&D style they created with feats, levels and shit like that in every game since.. Jade Empire, Mass Effect series and Dragon Age.

My favorite work that they have done is Neverwinter Knights, I even like NWN2 even tho they handed that project off.

Bioware is a smart developer who make solid games that dont stray too far from eachother, you play 1 bioware game you played them all essentially. Feats/Perks, Romance, chose your alignment, 20-40 levels to gain and thats the base for essentially all their games. Add in dual classing, mini-games, change of setting, and weapon variety and thats how the games differ from each other.

Dragon age origins as I see it is like Baldursgate.
Now I've played through baldursgate and I loved it! I played through Dragon age eeeh no. Because I feel like you don't have enough control of the storyline because sure you have millions of paths to "unfold" but they all lead to one unfortunetly I would have liked the choice of becomming evil and betraying all my partners and eating the dog!
Am I to take it that you are new Baldur's Gate fan?

If so welcome to fold!

I've got a small piece of bad news for you. You will forever compare cRPGs to Baldur's Gate and find them lacking.
Once a baldursgate fan always a baldursgate fan ^^ I'm actually very annoyed that Baldursgate three will never see the daylight :( Or I would atleast like an expansion pack just to cheer it up :)

Now I've completed both the Mass Effect games, for some reason I find myself looking down on Dragon Age. It just pales so much in comparison to that series.
Like... No?... I think of DA as far superior, maybe because I liked the setting maybe, maybe because I liked the characters better or myabe because the combat was fucking great(er then Mass Effect).

Personal prefrens I guess.

There is an error in your statement.

I must therefor conclude that you are either not a gamer or not on Earth.
