It's not too common to see good female guitarists(where I'm from, at least), so are there any female Escapists out there who consider themselves to be good guitarists?

This is something I notice in music in general, which is... odd.
I mean I can count the number of female lead guitarists I've heard of on one hand.

There aren't many truly good female guitarist in rock at all. The only ones I can think off the top of my head are; Joan Jett, Jennifer Batten and Marnie Stern

I'm sure there are others but there are a lot less than male guitarists, even though most the male guitarists look like women :p

Im not trying to be sexist, but when you think about it the only two mainstream genres that are dominated by women would be pop and arguably country, neither of which require really complicated guitar playing, and when that isn't the case most bands put women as lead vocals, and just having a woman sing in a "rock band" becomes a selling point. The only 2 bands I listen to that I can think of that have females as something other then vocals that isn't some unheard of indie band would be Sleater Kinney and Sonic Youth. Sleater Kinney being a all female rock group and Sonic Youths Guitar/Bass/Vocalist is a woman. For the most part epic guitar playing as you refer to it would mostly be found in Rock, and for the most part, Rock is viewed as a male only genre, there are exceptions but very few.

Kaki King is phenomenal...

She does very creative stuff on her own and played guitar on a lot of Tegan & Sara songs awhile back.

There's also Amy Milan, who is one of the lead singers/guitarists for STARS

St. Vincent is a fantastic guitarist/vocalist who does her own stuff and recently played guitar with The New Pornographers.

I've heard of a fair few female bassists (Quo Vadis, Bolt Thrower and Triptykon's bassists come to mind), but no guitarists. Sorry.

Huh, Nancy Wilson of Heart rank about the absolute best, she was the first when there was zero woman guitarist in the whole rock industry.

There's more than you'd think. Nancy Wilson and Joan Jett have been mentioned. There's Aimee Mann and PJ Harvey, and if you go into punk and it's various subgenres there's loads of them.

I'm sure I could name more if I really sat down and thought about it.

The major one i can think of is Orianthi: her bio from her site speaks for itself "She's opened for her hero (Steve Vai), backed an Idol (Carrie Underwood), traded solos with a legend (Carlos Santana) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson)"

My ex girlfriend was a decent guitarist. But every other girl I knew just wanted to be a singer.
THAT'S MY JOB!

Yeah, Kaki King is pretty great.

Wata from 'Boris' is the most amazing female lead I've ever heard.

Tal Wilkenfeld is a wicked bass player. Played with Jeff Beck. That's kind of a big deal.

I'm not a female but I know plenty of female guitarists who are pretty damn good including some of my students.

Not sure where you live, but where I live female guitarists of reasonable skill are so common that people just accept it as ordinary, nobody even bothers to mention it anymore. They're no more noticeable than good male guitarists.

Orianthi.

Yeah, I went there.

Then again, she should stick to instrumentals. Because when she sings it becomes generic pop with an awesome guitar solo.

Agh i was going to mention her :) props. She's amazing, watching her solos while on tour with Jeff Beck are so fucking awesome.

My tech at work showed her to me, he's also a bass player and he grew up with Roscoe Beck. Not really relevant but fucking cool nonetheless.
