i havent seen any... most female characters i see are highly stereotypical (ex: See all JRPGs) or highly sexualized (ex: See all JRPGs and Lara Croft)

or they're just there to be there (ex: Dana Mercer in Prototype)

i designed some myself and tried to make them as NON-SEXUALIZED and NON-STEREOTYPICAL as possible, but it's really difficult when you suck at drawing...

i guess the best example of a "normal" female character would have to be female Commander Shepherd (she's a good character all around). but i dunno if she counts since "default Shepherd" is male.

Why are half the girls on this list so far empty shells used as avatars for the game.
Foe Example:
Samus before other M doesn't count. Reason: She was only an avatar not a character.
Chell from Portal. Same Reason.
Female Pokemon Trainers : Same reason

Where are the strong female protagonists With STORY and life to back them?
alot of the chicks on this list are Supporting Cast (except that girl from parasite eve).

edit: Removed faith from list of avatars. never played mirrors edge. mi bad.

The Boss in MGS3 IS sexualized. Only at the end of the game, but that's enough for saying "Way to screw a fully non-sexualized female character, Kojima!".

Thank goodness she's still one of the best characters in video game history, regardless of gender.

WRONG.

Samus DID have a personality in "Metroid Fusion" (the same she has in "Other M" BTW, but WAAAAY better handled) and, to a lesser but real extent, in "Super Metroid".

And Faith... well, here you're proving that you have not played the game at all.

In any case I think that people think way too much into this. It's true that sexualization can ruin some potentially good female characters (Kasumi and Ayane, I'm looking at you) and stereotypes can be a pain in the ass (Come on, "Star Ocean 4"!).

But I think that before asking ourselves if a character is sexualized or stereotipical we should ask first if the character is COMPELLING.

The reason why Alyx Vance is such a great female character is NOT because she's not stereotypical or sexualized. She is a great female character because her personality was well constructed. Nothing more, nothing less.

If a character is well constructed, then everything else is secondary. I can think of an example of this in Tifa from the original "Final Fantasy VII". She was both sexualized and stereotypical: big boobed childhood friend with a crush on the main character wearing a tank top and a mini skirt. But since her personality was well crafted those didn't matter. Her looks were a bonus, nothing more.

Too bad that was ruined in "Advent Children" and the FF VII compilation games. Even though her sexualization was severely tone down (still insanely attractive with that black outfit, though), her personality was extremely simplified and she turned into a walking stereotype. The same happened with... well... every single character in the cast.

We can find the opposite in Lightning from "Final Fantasy XIII". She's neither stereotypical nor sexualized, and still as a character she's plain terrible.

She still got sexualized by hardcore nerds and for the whole thong incident though

As soon as the thought of "women characters are sexualised" goes into the mind, all female characters are sexualised.

If someone doesn't want the character to be sexualised then they put in a tonne of effort trying to make them un-sexual, BUT this inturn makes them sexualised, even if in the negative sense.

Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. that chick from an indie game called Twin sectors.
The main character in culpa innata, Chell from portal. Shepherd from Mass effect (sorry, but playing as the female... the game seems like it was made for it. the male voice actor lacks alot).
There's lots... I just can't think of any right now as it's late.
Morrigan from dragon Age. She was more classy than "sexualised".

Sure, two come to mind immediately, from two of my favourite games of all time.

The first is Ryn, protagonist of Drakan: The Ancient Gates, a third person fantasy game on the PS2. There is also another in the series, Drakan: Order of the Flame or something, on PC, that I have not played.

The other in Jen, protagonist of the PS2 game Primal, a third person action/puzzle solving game. Neither game is "perfect", but I absolutely love both, and if you ever see them in your local game store, pre-owned, presumably, do yourself a favour and pick them up.

Assuming you have a PS2 of course, or a fancy PS3 that still had backwards compatibility.

Wait... woah i'm sorry but Faith from Miror's edge an avatar? no character?
She talks, she has an interesting backstory.
You find about her sister and there's plenty of fleshed out background to her revealed throughout the game. I'm sorry I don't agree with that.
Faith totally counts. She's got character, she's not just a completely quiet avatar that people can use themselves to replace her with.

It's hardly as if the game devs are responsible for that though.

I'd say that Tali from Mass Effect is fairly unique. She's not decked out in revealing clothes (unlike Miranda...as big a pain in the arse as she is, she has a really, REALLY nice one!) and has the most "natural" dialogue / volcabulary of a pretty good group. That's reasonably high praise in my opionion because all the characters in Mass Effect 1&2 seem to be above average compared to most. I think it's because that ME2 in particular strays away from the usual thing of making every member of a species talk / act the same way and allows for variations in personality amongst one species.

Zoey in L4D? Yeah I know not the deepest story.

The princess in Prince of Persia? The first one, before she starts taking steroids and gets breast implants.

Er....er..... Leliana, Morrigan, Wynne from dragon age. They are all pretty mature and developed characters.

Er...Anna Grimsdottir from Splinter Cell

Mass effect characters. Ashley Williams, Liara T'Soni, Tali'Zorah.

Cortana? Not sure if that really counts.

Kerrigan from SC.

I wish Commader Shepard counted even though PCs from RPGs are kind of iffy.
She isn't really sexualised much at all. There's only one point in the entire game where she shows more than three inches of skin (and that's DLC) and all the hair options make it look like she hasn't bathed in three months.

We love you Fem Shep!

Female left 4 dead characters (the game doesn't sexualize them, the community is a different issue...).
Faith from mirrors edge.
Mona from max payne 2
female characters from half life and half life 2 (particularly the boring, generic example of alyx)
There are various examples in the eldar scrolls series.

...Yeah, one really doesn't need to look very hard to find non-sexualized female characters within games.

Meryl or mabye Sniper Wolf from Metal Gear Solid 1
Meryl is kinda dropped in as a love interest to the player, what with the whole working out in her underwear scene in MGS 1, as well as the close up of her ass at one point. Sniper wolf, however, is a rather good character...I'm more than a little disappointed off I overlooked it.
