Are these enemies getting creepier, or is it just me?

After 13 hours in two days, I've been able to tear myself away from FFXIII, and I realized something. After XII, the creatures in this game just don't seem as creepy. Take for instance, the slime:

to the 13 slime

It's nowhere near as creepy. So, have you ever played a game in a series where an enemy from an earlier incarnation that just don't do it for you? Or maybe a designer just slacked off and totally ruined your favorite monster?

Maybe it's just a trick of the light, but the tank seemed to get smaller and less imposing in the transition from L4D1 and L4D2.

A game series that ruined the monster design for me? Pokemon. Come on man, the new ones look like shit. I mean not all of the 150 were grade A, but with the new ones it seems like they aren't even trying.

As for FF: Part 12 was more of a gothic, realistic game and part 13 kind of picks up in the sci-fi realm from 10. I like it that the series always changes monster designs, keeps them fresh. I really like seeing where they take the GF/Esper designs with each game, although I was dissapointed by the motorcycle...

I like this one:

i second this, in the first one...dear god. when you heard that "dunnn....DUN DUN" i was like "AHHHH TANKKKKKKKKKKKKK" *opposite of leroy jenkins tactics*

that thing shook my boots in the first one, in the 2nd one not so much

I wonder if this is because of the addition of the Charger.

For that matter, since there are so many new infected that ruin my day, most of the old ones I'm like, "Oh good, it's only a Smoker."

Ah, yes. How could I forget to even mention pokemon. Once they stopped using real animals as inspiration, they just kind of seemed to stop caring: "what? you think we could get away with making a pokemon that has several dildos as eyes?" --"who cares, POKEMON!!!!! mawhahahahahahaha"

maybe not the exact thought process, but I like to imagine it like that.

That said, is it just me, or are they really pushing the new infected on us? Seems like seventy percent of the time it's a new one with the old (frankly, better) ones popping up much less often.
I like the first one more, is it obvious?

Truthfully, I don't find them to be all that creepy. More cartoon looking maybe but not more creepy looking. Some Dragon Age enemies may creep people out though.

I'm pretty sure the spawn rates are even for all infected, at least during versus matches. They go through cycles. I see them all about just as often. And I disagree on the new ones being worse than the old ones. They are all just as valuable when used properly, with the exception of the boomer. He's always going to be the most important.

Anyways, I think the reason you find the Tank to be less intimidating are the changes to his model in addition to the new lighting. The Tank's been running around shirtless in New Orleans for over a week, so it seems he has some nasty sunburn. Hence his flesh is more pink than the previous Tank.

They do tend to revise the characters a lot. And maybe they thought them flan archetypes could use hands to attack... opposed to some palm-face attack.

Is there a bahamut in ffxiii??? If so I'd like to see if this theory stands up in comparison to the advent children version.

Balverines. They were ruined in Fable 2. THey were the bane of my existance in Fable 1.

Yes Bahamut is there, he doesn't look as cool as the advent children version, but my god does he get the job done

Getting on the Flan topic, the problem I had with the first flans you run into... they look like giant jalapeno's. Also FF13 does have a Bahamut and it's close to the pre FF9 but with a touch of Mazinger.
Ah a more back to basics thing... Though bahamut was always quite stylized... and i loved it!
As far as i know a flan IRL is a type of pudding :3

Agreed. Agreed. Definitely agreed. They became such a pushover in the second one, especially the ones in the Arena. At least they still looked badass in the second one though.

Here's a link for the new bahamut in FFXIII with Fang standing in the front. I actually kind of liked the new design, yeah there's better, but I really liked the new wicked looking claws.

EDIT: Had to change the link.

I don't know, I just prefer the old set. One of the big things I really loved about the original L4D was the simplicity that masked the deeper aspects of the game; with L4D2 you have a bunch of new things going on, and I think that takes away from the "OH SHIT!" aspect when you get jumped/boomed/smoked/etc. You can't be freaking out if you're busy worrying about what kind of gun you want to get and who has the boomer bile and for God's sake did anyone take the defibrillator. As for the special infected, the first set seemed much more invasive and tough. The jockey is like the hick clown cousin of the hunter that no one in the Infected family likes, the spitter is a cake to deal with, and that just leaves the charger holding down the house on the new infected and carrying on with the feeling the others had; and even then, he's much more out in the open than the originals, and I've never had as hard a time dealing with him as with the originals as well.
Also, the originals are more fun to play.

I think he looks better in this incarnation.

Another thing developers totally botched was Pyramid head. In 'Home Coming' he was just...GAH!
