On Friday I came across this article in the Daily Mirror (I know its not a reliable source).
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1225549/Hitler-coached-Germanys-football-team-McDonalds-arches-symbolise-remembrance-day-What-todays-children.html

It's a survey which 2,000 children age 9 to 15 were asked about remembrance day and the World Wars.
It's pretty shocking to me that the children throught the Holocaust was the celebration at the end of the war.

Here's some quotes.

'Adolf Hitler was Germany's football team manager, according to youngsters aged nine to 15.'

'Only half knew D-Day was the invasion of Normandy - a quarter believing it was 'Dooms Day' and one quarter thought a nuclear bomb was dropped on Pearl Harbour which spurred America's involvement.'

'Some of the more disturbing results were that one in six children believed Auschwitz was a World War Two theme park.'

So what do you think about this?

The children don't pay attention because of their interest. It's most likely relative to the amount of time between the genocide attempt and their age which throws them off.

EDIT: But, yes, kids are stupid.

...do you mean "Are" they?

And from what I've heard, the Daily Mail is not exactly a reputable source.
Reading that last bit made me really question their reliability. Even though I hate kids, I can't bring myself to believe they're truly that dense.

Is that actually a reliable source?

I guess if you really bend the definition, Auschwitz can be considered a theme park. A gruesome and pretty evil park, but it certainly has the "theme" part down packed.

The question isn't, is todays kids getting stupid? The question is, is our children learning? :p

They'll learn, eventually. And if they don't, well, someone has to do the dirty jobs (until sufficiently advanced robots get developed and marketed, that is).

I truly hope this thread title is intentionally ironic.

Edit: And every option in the poll too.

I think you're also looking to rename the topic, "Are today's kids becoming more stupid?"
Don't worry, I did something much the same way in another topic bashing stupid people.

hahah I hope so too!

I highly highly doubt the holocaust thing. We were taught the holocaust so much when I was in school that it got boring. Plus what male kid at that age doesn't want to learn about WW2? I'm sure they were just making up answers for the newspaper.

Kids have always been stupid, but they are getting stupider. Idiocracy is looking more and more accurate.

To be honest, I'm going to take this one with a pile of salt. The Daily Mail is well known for using shock tactics for scaring people into action.

That said, there is an issue with education today, but probably not to the extreme that the daily mail is making it out to be...

This

OT: Why should a nine year old know who Hitler was? Let them have their childhood innocence, teach them this stuff in high school.

Besides which, this is a tabloid newspaper. I call bullshit.

"Is todays kids getting stupid or its me?" OT

This is not even a proper sentence.

What kind of education did you get OT?

Did you get "left behind?"

your source is the dailymail, according to them we're all drugged up, ultraviolent hoodies who can neither read nor write and are just generally bad, stupid and evil.

if it's true that we're getting stupider (whch it really isn't) it's the fault of society. I mean, if kids think that, it's because no one corrected them.

one in six children believed Auschwitz was a World War Two theme park

In a way, they're right.

I don't think this is because the kids are stupid, it's because the World Wars are passing out of living memory and they're only six years old. I learned about it because my Granddad had been a Sherman gunner (and killed a lot of people, but that's not really relevant) whilst all his friends had fought in some form or other, a good chunk of them with the scars to prove it.

They're all dead now, if I was born now I'd never get to ask why Grandad's face looked funny. Besides when I was six there were bigger things to think about than the war my Granddad fought in millions* of years ago, things like formula 1 cars, Damon Hill's helmet, spyplanes, dogs, cats, hamsters and DINOSAURS!
My Granddad considered these things more important too.

This is just the Mail being the Mail and coming up with a scare story. You can't expect a six year old to genuinely know that kind of history, they're six for fucks sake.

*When your six, sixty years may as well be a million for all the sense of time you have

I think it's because no one gives a shit any longer.

I think kids are using the wrong media to learn from. This is made worse by morons who worry too much about the risk of kids learning something that could be traumatic or offensive.
I've heard people saying that kids shouldn't learn about the holocaust because a) it might upset them and b) it might offend their parents (if they are deniers). That's the sort of attitute that leads to stupidity.
Also I suspect thatthe reality TV mentality of not really needing to be good at stuff to do well as long as people are looking at you probably doesn't help.
