Video games are a medium that incorporate art. It's like asking is "hip hop art", is paper art". Video games are a medium of expression(even if most games are created, written, produced, developed, voice acted, and directed by very narrow-minded "artists").

There's a keen difference boys, a key difference.

Halo 3 is bad art.
That's your opinion, not a concrete fact. All art is subjective to begin with.
Anything said by anyone that can't be proved is the opinion of the speaker. Of course that's my opinion. If it makes you feel more comfortable just imagine a "Well, I think..." at the beginning or a "... in my opinion" at the end of all of my statements.

In terms of gameplay, the only thing that Halo 3 offers that Quake didn't ten years ago, is the melee attack and that's a fact.
There's a lot wrong with your last statement, but suffice to say, take it up with another troll.

Yeah. I'm a troll because I made an on-topic post and I think Halo sucks.

On topic:
My loose definition of visual art is something you could leave in a dirty alley by a dumpster that would eventually be taken home by someone for decorative purposes.

Define art. For me, art is a creation that is meant to affect the viewer emotionally in some way, whether it is to make them think, laugh, cry or feel satisfied.
Fear is being the only one left on your team, with one remaining point of health, surrounded in close quarters by three pyros.

Personally I think the idea of games as art is kinda silly.
Same, and i'm an art major. I think you put art into games, and can influence games with art, but I don't see games as art.

Game most definitely ARE THE BEST ART EVER. This is because heroic art WARRIORS like Robin Rodrigo Ramirez Rodriquez and Jan Willem Nijman work like bold visionaries to create epoch defining works like "The Gutter".

Peace, out.

Attempting to define are in a NOBEL but rather stupid idea.

Art in and of its self is subjective, so we cant run around with a checklist and see if something is art. If we could, there would be a world commity running around with rubber stamps, and labeling every thing that is art.

So art as a universal concept cant definded.

Now as to MY thought of what are is...

Art would have to be something that evokes an Idea or concept, and/or represents some thing.
Yes, I aw aware that it is in and of its self of horrible deffinition that excludes some of my favoirite pieces of real art.

But hell, I have a theory and alot of you dont. Which makes me the winner.

ICO, Shadow of the Colosus, and Killer7 were the only games that made me feel weird emotions at the end. You know, the feeling you get after you watch a really good movie or a really good book and you can't stop thinking about what the movie or book meant? That's what I felt after playing them.

I think you're asking the wrong question. Here's something to turn your world upside down... What if all art is videogames?!?!?!?!?

Oh to answer one of your hypothetical questions, hiphop is most definitely not art.

If we go by what Oscar Wilde says "All Art is quite useless"

Thus games are art as they can bring the same emotions as any old/modern art piece.

Everything is Art: Anything intended to be "art" is art

I'm curious, do people who bring up the idea of "games as art" are actually interested in art itself or are they just that insecure about so much as one person calling their hunks of plastic "toys"?

What if games are life created by an 8-bit artist? What if life is an art of games where the pixel is the imagination of a genius?

All important questions that need to be answered.

I'm still so undecided on this. Is anyone really going to tell me that pissing on people in postal 2 is artistic work? By the same token, I frequently call software development "the art of software development". Thus I would say while the CREATION of a game is certainly an art, the product is not necessarily something I would consider art. Naturally there are exceptions.

Hip Hop is definetely NOT art, it's a medium of expression that incorporates art. It's a medium of expressionism. Phenominal actually.

Games are all art, but once you get past that, you just have to accept that most games, and most art are bad art.
