After spending all last night reading some of my favorite short stories and comic books, I remembered one of the reasons I started reading at a later age; I always thought I was a horrid reader.

It would often take me up to 45 minutes to an hour to read a chapter of 15 or so pages. I was 9 at the time, but I still felt inadequate compared to others whom I thought could blaze through a book in about a day but now that I actually enjoy reading, I haven't much noticed that my speed of reading hasn't changed a lot.

Last night, I was reading a book of short stories. Each story was somewhere between 20 - 30 pages long and the one in particular was around 26. Once finished I noticed that it had taken me 50 minutes to read that and after that, I read the Sin City book "That Yellow Bastard" in about an hour, so my basic question is, since I really have nothing to compare it to, is that slow?
So to get to the point of the thread, how fast can you read, do you consider it fast, do you care at all and does it effect your reading experience?

I read considerably fast, whenever I am reading something with a friend (like say a comic book) I am done far before them. Sadly I can sometimes misread words when I read really fast.

If I have motivation to read, (I'm enjoying it or it's for a test), I read quite fast. If I have no motivation, reading anything can take me a long time.

The largest book in terms of pages and small writing would be Atlas Shrugged for me, and I cannot remember exactly how long it took to be honest.

When the last Harry Potter book came out I finished it on that day, oh, and I wasn't one of those crazy people who went to a midnight release, nor did I stay up all night (I like them, but not that much). Tie frame was somewhere around 10am-5pm or something.

I've been a fast reader for as long as I could remember. Its always been a big help, becuase I'm also good at procrastination.

For example, we had to read All quiet on the Western Front for history (amazing book btw) and I had put it off until the weekend before the test and assignment. I powered through it and did the assignment and got 105%. It also helped that it was one heck of a book.

Im a pretty fast reader.
The better i like a book the faster i seem to read it.
It can take me anywhere from 10min - 35min to read a chapter depending on how big the chapter is and how well i like the book.

I can also put away a fair bit of Manga in just a few hours.

Yes I am.

I'm always on the verge of telling my brother to "Hurry the fuck up!" when there's text on screen in a game.

I am quite a slow reader, probably due to being Dyslexic. It doesn't really bother me, and can be very useful when I can't sleep because reading a lot wears my brain out.

Yes, I am a fast reader, which has earned me lots of comments that I don't actually read what I say I have. I do read them and my reading speed has increased exponentially. Compared to how I was when I was 10 and 11, was probably the biggest change. 10, it took me about 2 minutes a page. When I was 11, about 25 seconds for a standard page. Now, even less.

However, it does sometimes harm my reading pleasure. I can sometimes not remember certain details. That or the books I read have too many characters that I find it hard to keep up. Oh wait, Harry Potter introduces 10 new characters with every book. That explains alot.

Calumon: I read pretty slow, but I don't read big books like Jack. I read Manga and comics! ^^

Im a pretty fast reader and I usually understand most of what I read. It doesnt affect my reading experience much exepct when I have to read to other people, it ususally ends with me either reading to fast for them to understand.

If you arent sure wheter or not you are a fast reader I think there are tests you can take noline to measure your reading speed.

Edit:

When I want to read fast I can do 60-70 pages an hour (useful when you start studying a day before exams).

I've started to notice that I often read too fast, as in, I don't really fully enjoy books I'm reading and don't let things like character or environment descriptions sink in. I'm turning it down to 20-25 pages an hour now, so I can immerse myself in better in the story.

Reading slowly is better.

On an average day I go at almost exactly a half page of a normal-sized paperback per minute. I don't know if that's fast or slow but it's my speed. I used to read faster but I would miss information so I slowed down.

I do read very quickly, I can read a good thick book in 3 hours. Unforunately, this Always backfires in maths exams, Where I can't find the values I need and end up bashing my head into my desk...
However, when I was younger, my cousin (who I dislike) looked into my bookcase, and was astonished by a series of young adult novels I had, and was reading the final volume. I said I had read this book today, and he stated it would have taken him months to read each book. He looked uttely bemused by the concept of reading faster than one word per second....

It doesn't matter how fast you read, It's about how well you take it in, somtimes it takes people longer to read things.
