If I have motivation to read, (I'm enjoying it or it's for a test), I read quite fast. If I have no motivation, reading anything can take me a long time.
I'm in the same position where if I need or want I can read fast, but with no motivation i just can't.

I read pretty fast. That comes from practice, I read lots of books.

Oh, and I don't know exactly how fast I read. Took me about three free days with lots of reading(NOT 24/7 though) to get through a 1000 page book.
It takes me roughly 4 hours, uninterrupted, to get through a book that size (I read The Stand in just over 4 hours not too long ago).

I am a speed-reader, but I comprehend and retain what I read, which is just as important as speed.
That's a page every 15 seconds or so, I can read that fast too, but then I get really stressed out, and while I comprehend everything, I don't get a chance to appreciate it because I'm constantly assaulting myself with new words at the absolute peak of my speed.

Do you even enjoy reading when you do that? Because I don't, I like to stick around 40 seconds a page or so, above average, but it leaves enough time to not only read everything and remember the words, but to interpret and visualize it as you go.
Actually, I enjoy reading quickly more than when I take it slow. Bad memories of elementary school... my teachers forced me to read more slowly because they didn't think I understood what I read. Drove me nuts, you know?
That must have been annoying as shit, I definitely wouldn't have slowed down for them.

Still, I like it more when I am not reading so quickly that I don't have any brainpower left for visualizing and enjoying it.
It was either slow down or be forced to take comprehension test after comprehension test to make them happy.

My brain was apparently built for multi-tasking, so visualizing and enjoying kind of comes with the whole thing. I liken it to watching television: you don't have to focus on enjoying the show, your mind absorbs it and processes it.

I'm a fast reader. It only really causes problems if I'm reading aloud. I started forcing myself when I was about four years old with the "follow the words with your finger, then move your finger faster" trick.

My DS doesn't like me either. It says I can't possibly read that fast, and calls me a liar...

I read slow purposely. That way I can fully absorb the content in a spoken form, retain the emotional context, and enjoy each sentence as it flows out from the novel. People who read fast don't soak in the atmosphere within a scene.

Reading fast isn't always a good thing, you know...

If you always run, you will miss all the good things in life.

If you read slow, then take your time with the books you read, there's nothing wrong with it.

i've always been a quick reader but i've gotten quicker over the years i tend to read 300-400 page books in a few hours everytime my brother gets a book he think i might want to read he gives it to me to read first because it will take him ages to read whereas he only has to wait a few hours to read it :)

That's, um, wow.

I guess I could read like that, I just wouldn't enjoy the book. I like to sit back, relax, read, drink in the atmosphere of the book and have some tea. Reading at that speed is not relaxing to me, I only do it when I want to get through something fast. It hurts my brain when I do it for too long. I doubt I could keep it up for four hours.

I don't really know any other way TO read, tbh. Reading slowly ruins my enjoyment of a book.

To be fair, this is in completely uninterrupted time. That's how I relax with books... taking the time I have without allowing the world to interrupt. Sure, I can finish an average novel in about an hour or two, but when I'm doing it with everything going on around me, it's not as enjoyable as when I can shut my bedroom door, grab a soda and a handful of yogurt raisins, and read in the quiet.

I can read quick to get the general idea of things, but when I really need/want it to sink in, I take me time to absorb it all.

Found out late last year that I can read at 1200 or so words per minute, but I only do that when skim reading or when I'm really into a book. Usually I'm a little bit slower than that.

According to the guy who tested us, it's about being able to take in large groups of words at once, instead of just reading and processing one word at a time.

When I'm just reading through comments or something, I go very quickly.
If I'm trying to remember plot points and specific details, I go a lot slower. But honestly, it all varies depending on how many times someone in the room makes a noise/talks to me for no reason, and I have to fight down the urge to throw the book at them.

I'm a pretty fast reader in that I think I read at fast talking pace if you know what I mean, but I'm also good at skim reading and still getting what's going on.
Sometimes I get the end of a book and think 'darn, I wish I'd made it last longer!', when I get a great book I'll rattle through it in a matter of days.
(I once read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 9 hr 24 mins (yeah I timed) although not in one go and I do realise that that was incredibly sad of me to do so, but I was only 11 at the time).

I normally read quickly enough. If I'm reading a book I enjoy I can get through maybe 100 pages in an hour or two. Though the speed you read at doesn't really make a difference to your enjoyment of a book. If you enjoy reading, then it's fine regardless of how much you read. Although if there's something you're reading and you don't really want to read it, or you need to be at a certain page by a certain time, you might want to try skimming through the book and reading brief passages of information present on the page. Although I still maintain reading speed is unimportant.
