To me, good graphics are a bonus, as opposed to an essential. I love Deus Ex, but even I won't defend its awful, blocky graphics.

Master of Orion also looked terrible, I loved it.

Clearly, THAT is the pinnacle of game graphics.

Gameplay > all :D
I mean, I've played lots of games where I don't give a crap about the story (fighting games, Mega Man X, Hitman...), but gameplay is what gets me hooked.

For example, I bought Alone in the Dark (the latest one). I liked the graphics and the story was quite intriguing, but it was nearly unplayable (camera issues, complicated controls, etc). Now it's in the bottom of a drawer somewhere at home.

I feel that at a certain point, there's a weird disconnect when it comes to graphics. I can easily go back and play PS2 games and be able to enjoy them, because the PS3's graphics, while still far superior, are still in the same ballpark as the PS2. Compare this to the PS1, and for me it often makes the game almost unplayable, between the graphics and the old school controls that don't use the analog sticks as much.

However, I can still go back to the 8 and 16 bit eras and play those games fine. I have no idea why.

Story definately. The graphics "Wow!" factor seems to die off after the first play and after that its down to the story to grip you.

I still play games like Secret of Mana when the whim takes me. Good old Snes.

I was even searching for an old Acorn game a few months ago called Interdictor just because I remember playing it so long ago but never finishing it. Considering the hardware around at the time it was an absolute masterpiece.

I've been a gamer for so long that I consider anything that has more sophisticted graphics than simple geometrical shapes to be Uber good. I'm not that impressed by graphics, except if they are genuienly artisric, or add to the mood. Usually what is more important to me is what you can do in the world and how it responds, does it feel alive.

But story over graphics, any day.

See I rank gameplay and story as being equal, I find that if I'm not being driven by a good story then all the gameplay in the world isn't going to disguise the fact that I'm just pressing buttons, and likewise if the gameplay is poor then I might as well just read a book.

That's just me though, I'm pretty fickle.
well i would disagree for instance how important is a story for a multiplayer? how good was the story for mw1?

what was the best story in a game for you. the only one i really loved - god of war 1 & 2

Quote in a quote in a quote here lol

Yeah in multiplayer the gameplay rules supreme, but that's taken purely as a challenge and to interact with your friends, if they play. On the flipside you have puzzle and adventure games which are all story and no gameplay, and they were pretty popular in their times.

And you can have multiplayer with storyline, the result of which is that life eating, monolithic digi-smack World of Warcraft.

Best story? Purely for the amount of times it moved me (i was... 10ish?) Final Fantasy VIII. The characters and their interaction with each other hasn't been equalled in my opinion. I haven't played GOW I or II, I'm afraid, but I've heard good things.

I'm more of a game play kind of guy. However given the options, story wins out. I expect my games to look at least presentable, but I don't need too much emphasis on graphical elements.

Neither. I play games to have fun. If not for that, please give me a movie instead.

Graphics done badly are much worse than merely not good graphics, if a game has graphics that fail at what they attempt to do and come off looking awkward and weird it can kill it for me. On the other hand if the game didn't aim for a fancy graphics style and manages to pull of something with simple graphics well that it will help the game. this is of course a bonus over good story/gameplay, a game must have one of those two for me to consider it.

Graphics don't matter. I can happily play old PS1 games.

Morrowind is the best example I can think of, excellent story, rather old graphics (now that is)

I am a "if the game is fun, I'll play it" person. Anyone who says games these days have bad graphics better go and play some NES before they speak again. As for the story, most games end up where you are the only person who can save the planet, and the only thing that is different are the character backstories. No game is all that innovative in the storyline department anymore.

Both are superficial, gameplay is what makes a game good.

Regardless of the story or graphics, I won't touch a rpg because the gameplay is just be repeating the same actions endlessly. There is nothing to react to.

I love the stories in games. I still play Bioshock and Dead Rising just because their stories are so great.

I enjoy a game's story more than its graphics. I really enjoy games like oblivion, morrowind, mass effect, etc; games that put a ton of backstory in the game to make it seem like you're in a living, breathing world.

Gameplay is king though. That was one of the downsides of morrowind IMO. the gameplay was boring
