Just play whatever you find fun. Who cares if it's "mainstream" or not. It's like those people who despise anyone who doesn't listen to independent music or use a Mac.

no, why should it? its mainstream for a reason, because its good. i do try to further my tastes (like music and food) with games, sometimes fruitful, sometimes not. the point of the matter is, they're mainstream because alot of people like them, and people like them because the games themselves are made well and are timeless, the only reason this question is raised by some people because they themselves have been questions by people who don't like to conform to the mainstream genre, if it exists, basically because they don't like to conform.

Yes that means you are main stream, and that's good. You are casual if you play mario on the Wii, if you play MW 2 and such games online a lot, measn ur hardcore.
What if you do both? Paradox?

In my opinion it depends on the amount of games you have played. if you have only played 4 games this year and they where all major titles then I'd say you where mainstream. if on the other hand, you have played 40-50+ titles then I'd say you are not.
If you only buy the hyped titles and don't have the interest to put some back into finding games that aren't on the front page of game magazines then you go just go where the adverts point you. And I believe that's what most gamers do, thus making it mainstream.

Mildly mainstream. I like Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, but i also like indie games. And i'm surely won't ever buy Modern Warfare 2.

It seems that you can't throw a rock without hitting a "Hardcore" gamer, I for example currently own Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto IV, Prototype, Hitman: Blood Money, Both Left 4 Dead(s?), The Orange Box, Borderlands, Bioshock and Halo Wars. Does this make me a mainstream gamer?
I guess. Most of those are pretty damn good games, but it hardly makes someone "Hardcore".

Yes you are one.

Is thig a bad thing ? Not really but it kinda makes you seem ignorant for not giving attention to more quality games that don't get the advertisement or hype e.g. Batman AA

So being Mainstream is not bad, you just miss out

then again those who refuse to play anything mainstream are also missing out, in the end we enjoy playing games.

I play them all. Literally. From Earth Defense Force 2017 to Mirror's Edge to Modern Bore-fare 2 (at least in terms of the plot, rest is solid) to Lost Odyssey to Dragon Age to Aquaria to Sam & Max to Morrowind to Fable to Forza 3 to Bayonetta to God of War to Final Fantasy to Torchlight.

I'm mainstream AND eclectic all in one.

I guess I'm kind of a mix and match kind of guy? I play many games, many of them considered mainstream, but then again, i spend equally amounts of time playing indie games.

just for owning mainstream games doesnt make you mainstream (if you have non mainstream games aswell) nor is meainstreaming bad
i think if youve never played online outside of a cod/mw or halo or gears then ur def mainstream.

but whats important is not how mainstream u are but how good the games you play ar for you.

Mainstream gaming is fine. Avoiding something simply because it's mainstream is just idiotic.
On the other hand, playing something just because seemingly everybody else is playing it is just as stupid.

Play the games you like the looks of.

The word Gamer annoys me let alone sub designations of made up titles, Hardcore, casual etc.

I mean its defines what we do well i.e. if you skate then you're a skater, if you play paintball then you're a Paintballer - Airsoft, Airsofter and so on and so forth, and i guess the word player was already taken, but i've never said to someone "Yeah, im a gamer" like its a profession.

I own the games that you do (OP), and the games that get hyped usually have the most money behind them and therefore become mainstream. Not coincidentally, the games with the most money behind them are *usually* well made.

So by that logic, games that you have to search for or just turn up in your local game store are by contrast, a load of shite. So why would i want to play shite games just for the prestige of calling myself whatever it is a mainstream gamer isn't?

My favourite band is Breaking Benjamin.
It has never played on the radios or been on TV over here and only 3 people in a school of 500 of even heard of them.
They're every other song on the radio here. They also broke to number 4 on the billboard so honestly, I would wager you listen to more mainstream music than they do if they've not heard of them.

But maybe you're not from the US, and maybe they aren't popular where you're from. Let me assure you though that their brand of rock is as mainstream as it gets however. But at least you didn't say "seether".

You say "Mainstream" like it's a bad thing. To be honest, I feel that generally a game HAS to be mainstream in order to have the budget necessary to achieve greatness. Sure some mainstream titles are focused on profit, but would companies like BioWare and Bethesda be able to produce the awesome games they have if their previous efforts weren't smashing successes?

Mainstream doesn't always equal good, but for the most part, good does often equal mainstream.

I just play what's fun, I'm don't really care how I'm labelled, as long as I'm having fun cos that's what games are for :)
