Cough.
Avg is terrible, Avast is average, but if you want a free AV, I would use Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you wanna pay go for Kaspersky, which is excellent, or Norton (Which is now very light on resources and includes a behaviour blocker for good Av protection.)

Like sunami says, Never, Never run 2 AVs They'll cross over and create false positives.

You also need a good firewall, I reccomend:
Pro firewall choices:
Comodo with Defence plus
Outpost Firewall free 2009
Online Armor free or paid.

Basic:
Windows firewall. Bad on XP but is fine in Vista and W7, just needs to be configured.
PC Tools firewall

Never use Zonealarm. It is downright bad.

I don't use any anti-virus protection, I don;t get any viruses because I am not an idiot. My brother has a Mac, he uses anti-virus programs for it because he got Mac viruses, he is an idiot. It isn't whatever OS you use or anti-virus program, it is your competence on the internet.
This is one of the stupidest things I've heard all day.
Really? Well, I'll go install AVG and get back to you on how many viruses I have. SPOILER ALERT: it will be 0.
Your computer could be part of a botnet, for all you know!
Yes most things are stopped by common sense, but you never know when a legit page can be hacked, as I remember happening to Hotmail at one point unless my own antivirus software was acting up.

No protection = computer suicide, if you ask me.

I use Avast, and i don't get a lot of trouble. I'm not retarded on the internet though, i know a bit about how to keep clear of virus

I've got a friend who used to do something completely different. when he got his computer, he installed all his games and programs, and stuff like music and movies (and backup stuff) was kept on a different harddrive. He then made a ghost image of his main harddrive on which he had all his games an programs installed.

Then he just used his computer whatever way he wanted, he's real smart when it comes to comp's so it's not like he's getting virusses all over the place anyways. Though he Dl's liek a maniac, everything from tv-series and movies to games, mods and weird programs.

If his comp starts to become fucked up, he would just reinstall from his ghost image.

Oh yeah, I am a virus btw, if you read this you've been infected, please spread me to to your friends and family through ear-sex and munting

You realise regular websites (i.e. not porn, or any illegal download sites or whatever) can contain viruses? The Escapist could have them, the My Little Pony website could be running wild with a virus trying to rape your bank account.

Yes competence plays a small part, but if you search for a topic on Google, you've got to click the link to find out what's on the site.

You've proven yourself more idiotic by not installing any Anti-virus software.

Oh, and more info. You should run a Spyware checker every now and again too. I run Spybot: Search and Destroy [http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html] and Malwarebytes AntiMalware [http://www.malwarebytes.org/]. Despite sounding like a virus, I'd have to give the nod to Malwarebyes, it's perfect.

Ive got 2 anti-virus programs and an anti-spyware after I had to reformat my entire comp after a nasty little bug got on my comp ( I wasnt downloading porn I swear....) So ive had no issues with 2 layers of anti-virus.
You should never run two AV programs at the same time. They sometimes like to fight, and even if they never have haven't yet, the chances of them duking it out and frying your install are pretty good.

[hr]

And as for me, I don't run an AV any more. I don't download stupid shit from the internet, and even every time I install an AV just for a quick check-up, I've never had a virus. Not in at least 4 years.
yeah with the 2 anti-virus they scan on diffrent days one on Tuesday, one on Saturday, so they never compete like that.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I mentioned a little while ago. Any legit websites can be hacked, and I remember Hotmail being hacked at one point last year unless my antivirus was playing tricks on me.

Having no protection is a STUPID idea.

AVG is terrible yet you recommend Norton or Microsoft Security Essentials? Norton is very light on resources? ROFL? That is laughable to say the least. Microsoft Security Essentials is even worse for virus protection and the amount of system resources is uses than Norton. I pay for the AVG Internet Protection suite. And AVG Free is just as good at virus protection it just has less features. I can tell you it easily uses less than half the resources Norton uses. I also have not had a Trojan, Worm, or Virus infection in years. And WTF is Avira? I have never heard of them at all.

I use Trend Micro. McAfee was completely useless and slowed my comp down considerably, and AVG caused my game of Oblivion to crash one too many times. AVG also caused Spelunky to slow to a crawl when AVG started running a virus scan. Which really pissed my off, seeing as Spelunky is a 2D game and should run fine no matter what.

If you ever get a virus there's a really good chance they'll both go after it and have a messy little fight.

But I guess if it works for you then keep doing it. Just be wary, two AV's at one time can cause unexpected problems...

Especially if they have firewalls integrated. I once tried running Avast and AVG at the same time... the firewalls clashed and I couldn't get ANY network access until I removed Avast.

Agree with you 'bout Panda. But...have you tired Norton 2010? If it uses too many resources it's a problem with your PC.
Avira is one of the best AVs availible, as is Microsoft security essentials. Go read some reviews.
AVG will let viruses into your PC, believe me, it will, do a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Superantispyware and get back to me...

I have never heard 2 AV programs causing problems. Anyone else have this problem with running two. Even if they are on seperate days?

I use Kaspersky, it works pretty well. Although it has an annoying habit of mistaking some of my games for keylogggers; fortunately it doesn't actually do anything about 'em other then pop up a warning.
