I love the history channel.
I got angry when people don't watch cutscenes
I yelled in excitement when I saw Skyrim announced at the Spike VGAs... at my ex girlfriend's house.
I quote games and movies all the time and laugh to myself because no one else gets it :p
You'd hate me then. My typical response to a long cutscene is "I'll be back after I go have lunch. And if there's a quick-time event in here I'm going to find the developer and garrote him."

I've built an engine that runs on compressed air. From Legos.
I'm also working on the concept of a Nerf Railgun (my dad found a HUGE capacitor, I need to use it somehow.)

I have pages and pages of calculations for getting the best Knights of the Old Republic character build, the final one cross references with the best armour to give me the ultimate guy. There is about 30 pages of handdrawn graphs, tables of armour stats, and a walkthrough detailing what way to end quests to get the best outcome, which planets to go to, and how to level up and arm all secondary characters.

I also just spent the last four days researching everything about the katana and longsword, to see which is the better weapon, after reading another thread here that sparked my interest.

I once drew up a functioning model of a bicycle suspension fork in Sketchview because I was bored in class. I also own every Calvin and Hobbes collection. Ever.

I configure routers in OSPF and EGRIP protocols before and after I play some vidya. Then, I log on to a Linux machine and type a ton of commands into the terminal. NO GUIs ALLOWED!

Ladies please, there is enough of me to go around.

Well there does come a point where long is too long. I just really get into game stories, so when my buddy skips everything I get a little agitated. I'm sure our shared interest in history would make up for it :D

I think I'm a bad geek/nerd. I don't play WoW, or any MMO, or magic, or D&D, or a lot of RPG's. But I'm a CIS major and like writing code... so... yeah...

I am, when I get around to it, planning to create a website for my university film-making society, and thus am in the process of learning basic HTML and web-building. If I can master that skill then I'm considering charging people to build websites for them and act as webmaster, and turn a decent skill in to something marketable.

Also, when I get the time and inclination to carry on, I am planning to write the rest of a Halo fanfic I started. The basic idea is that it's set just after, and a few years before, the events of Halo: Ghosts of Onyx, and details a mission that went wrong for Tom and Lucy (SPARTAN-IIIs of Beta Company) and how they're remembering it in the aftermath of entering the Onyx Dyson Sphere, while Tom tries to finally get Lucy to talk again. The first chapter is up on Fanfiction.net, and here is a link if anyone wants to read it. It is good, I promise, unlike most of the stuff on that site (in Sturgeon's Law, I come under the 10% of good stuff...).

http://login.fanfiction.net/story/story_preview.php?storyid=6535664

Also planning a Higurashi no Naku Koro ni fanfic, writing an entirely new story arc based partly on Watanagashi-hen but with Mion going crazy instead of Shion, after some minor changes to the other arc events and Keiichi returning Rena's feelings instead... And I'm joining the Assassin's Society at university, and would love to do a proper LARP event at some point...

If those things don't make me enough of a geek, I don't know what will...

Well, it's six in the morning and I'm currently seriously pondering whether Nidorans from Pokémon would be rabbits, guinea pigs, or hyraxes. I'm leaning towards hyraxes for several reasons.

I call myself a nerd, as geek seems to be too mainstream and "cool" now, and I have been told on many occasions that I am neither of these things. Plus, I've always been called a nerd, never a geek.
I also don't feel any affiliation with the word "geek", but that's mostly because my native language doesn't seem to have an equivalent for it. Nerd is a nerd.

Well first, I prefer the term Nerd. A geek is a carnival attraction so it seems more derogatory to me.

But some evidence. I went to Dungeons and Dragons camp from ages 11 to 14. I dressed up as Grand Admiral Thrawn for Halloween in 5th grade. I have two separate Blade Runner themed shirts. I've got nearly 5000 comics. A decent sized collection of games and movies and dvd boxed sets.

I could do more but without context this all probably makes me seem pretty sad so I'll hold off.

Wow...good job guys. You all made me feel profoundly...normal.

I'm studying engineering at university...but it's mining engineering. Practical, not really nerdy.

I'm an ex-WoW addict. I had to quit because it was slowly ruining my life socially and mentally.

I love movies, but not as much as others. I love music, but not as much as others.

I'm a profoundly moderate person. So...uh...you guys win?

I'm in Computer Science at University, and I play Video Games in my spare time. I want to be in Video Game design/programming/production after I graduate.

But my tastes in things vary extremely... I mean, I enjoy geeky things. I love sci-fi movies. I love Fantasy books. And I love Viking Metal. I also really liked Portal. But at the same time, I watch the latest blockbusters, I read many other books, I listen to top 40 pop songs (and many other genres to be honest), and I play Black Ops.

I wouldn't really call myself a geek. Not usually, anyways. But I do go through phases. Besides, I associate geek with this show:

A disgusting, vile show. It has extremely annoying man-children as its main characters. The main actor on the left is a douchebag in real life, as seen on Conan. And I hate hearing people say, "Oh my gawd I loooooved Star Trek as a kid! I was such a GEEK!" No you weren't. If you were, you'd know that Star Wars is infinitely better than Star Trek.

No, a true geek would be able to appreciate both -- and a really serious geek would much rather watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture than Star Trek (2009), which was basically Star Wars in Star Trek clothing. Seriously, Star Wars has cross sub-cultural appeal; it takes a true nerd to geek out over Star Trek, but anyone who likes explosions can enjoy Star Wars.

Is that Malbolge? I can't make heads or tails of it.

OT: I'm more of a nerd than a geek. To me, a nerd is someone who enjoys nerdy things in general, whereas a geek is someone who focuses on one or two nerdy things. I've done more than my share of gaming over the years, both tabletop and video, I read plenty of fantasy novels and I watch plenty of movies. I'm one of those trekkies who honestly loves Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and would rather watch The Undiscovered Country than The Wrath of Khan, although I also love Star Wars. Xena was one of my favorite shows growing up, and I've recently discovered the joys of Stargate: SG-1, a show that I missed out on during its original run. I'm even a bit of an audio geek. I currently have a proper 5.1 system set up in my livingroom, but I had a <link=http://kantack.com/surround/surround2.html>Hafler circuit set up for a good two years before I was forced to upgrade because the right channel of my stereo amp burned out, and I had four speakers running standard stereo around my bedroom for years before that.

The first geeky thing that comes to mind would be translating the Lord of the Rings dwarven language into English back in middle school (before I really used the internet for anything productive) and then using it for passing notes around to my mates.

I friggen love Khuzdul.

Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Escapists:
What are we if not geeks? Our common hobby alone is a perfect example of that, yet it is hardly the extend of the geekiness for some of us. In this thread, proudly strut your geekiness! The "pics or it didn't happen" rule is in effect. We want EVIDENCE, not anecdotes!

Naturally, I'll start:

Some of you may recognize this molecule. It's caffeine, a most wonderful compound. This isn't a simple rendering. The spectrum (IR for the curious) was calculated from scratch using the B3LYP method. The mesh is the electron density around the molecule, also calculated by yours truly (aka my netbook over 3-ish hours). Uhm yes, I do quantum mechanical calculations for fun...
The IR spectrum. Ohh it's been a while. Where's that signature O-H peak!?

OT - In my current life with a nominally normal job I just read nerdy novels and love them. ie Neal Stephenson.
