Are you getting FFXIV: ARR? If so what server will you play on?

The thread title pretty much sums it up. I'm pretty pumped about this game and I'm really curious what servers people will be playing on (or if there will be an unofficial Escapist server). Right now I'm leaning towards playing on Gilgamesh, but if my fellow Escapists were planning to put a Free Company together on another server I would love to join them.

The Open Beta begins tonight for people who have already registered, and registration opens back up tomorrow for people who are curious but were a little slow to register. Character progress carries over from Open Beta and Early Access to the retail version of the game (though there is a level cap of 20 for each class during beta).

Yup, I'll be getting it. The open beta won me over. I pretty much never stick with an mmo or even consider paying a subscription one, but FFXIV: ARR is pretty damn enjoyable and feels like a solid Final Fantasy game despite being online. Currently in the beta I'm playing on Coeurl as an Archer, Gilgamesh wasn't accepting any more players.

Was gonna give the beta a bash, until I checked the recommended specs. Hoo boy...
This is quickly becoming my new pet peeve: "What's that, a modular gaming platform that spans the full spectrum of hardware performance? Let's only make games that either require 10000$ tech, or can be run on a toaster!"
Oh well, should've seen it coming really. Even with mediocre graphics mmo's are heavy stuff.

The beta won me over, yep. It runs really smoothly on my laptop, and actually looks pretty good. Combat's fun enough, the character customization is sufficient, and I like the way they implemented the class system. I don't have the cash on-hand to preorder, and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix is a slightly higher priority, but I think FFXIV:ARR will probably be the next game that I buy after that.

It they ever eliminate the sub fees I'll consider it.
But as of right now, after having played the closed beta, no, I won't.

I was a female Miqo'te who used her fists.
Don't remember which server.
I believe that the game's director said he'd rather shut the game down entirely than make it F2P...

I tried to get into the beta this weekend, but my PS3 fucked it up, and refused to tie my two accounts together, so I couldn't get to play it. Here's to hoping for free trials, because I don't play MMOs that require subscription without a chance to try it out first.

Which is fine by me! I absolutely hate F2P games. With the recent changes to World of Warcraft (In-Game cash shop primarily) it made me never want to sign up for it again. So right now, Final Fantasy XIV is all I really have to hide away from shitty F2P games. (I am not complaining as I looooooove ARR!)
Well it will go F2P or at least B2P. There is no doubt. Rift, a game that was P2P for a while finally had to throw it in and go F2P. It's just not viable unless your EvE (which is a niche), WoW, or FFXI (which came out before WoW and thus had a fanbase that is substaining.)

I have been playing on Gilgamesh as an Arcanist. Lots of fun and I may make Summoner my main class. However, my plan is going White Mage. Love me some White Mage.
This right here. Gonna love me some White Mage healin', too. After that, I'm planning to hit up the Dragoon job.

Just got my beta code, so I don't know what server I'll be playing on. However, I am going to be playing on the PS3 version and then, when it comes out, the PS4 version.

Yoshi-P did an article back during E3, talking about why he won't be making FFXIV a F2P game. He makes some interesting statements about the industry that I don't believe many people think of, such as the role of investors in the livelihood of an MMO.

Hm... Even so I don't like the idea of P2P. Since it makes you feel like if you don't play often you're not getting your money's worth. It's almost like guilt tripping the player and I really hate that feeling. Sure you could unsub but then if you want to play again later you will have to resub which is an instant $15 which depending on when the last payment was that could be two $15.

Now to be fair, I highly doubt anyone does that since most people do just leave the sub going for when they play. I will admit, I pay for the Old Republic, but I like how I can unsub and still keep playing whereas for FFXIV I would be locked out. Personally I think Buy to play is the best of both world.

You get money from the box, which will already get more people playing because they're more willing to drop money on a game that has no fee afterward and it can allow the game to get better. So even if you don't play for a while you can always come back and check it out.

Admittedly, I haven't played the beta at all, but I have seen some videos of it, and, from what I can tell, the combat looks about as fun and interesting as World of Warcraft's. Which is to say, it might have been fun 8 years ago, but these days I expect something better than target-locked button mashing.

I'll probably be giving this one a miss, unless someone can relate to me the hidden intricacies of combat that have somehow eluded me.

I played the original MMO Final Fantasy (I wanna say it was... 11? 13?) but it felt like it had TONS of grinding, and not much room for solo play. I kinda gave up around level 20.

I mean, I wasn't really that into MMOs back then, and that's since changed, so maybe I'd enjoy it a lot more now.

Sorry to derail, but has it changed at all? Or is the best way to level still just getting into a group and grinding random mobs?

Was originally going to ignore it, but the beta's changed my mind. I'll be pre-ordering it some time this week.

Quests so far seem to be soloable, and there are plenty of events similar to Guild Wars 2's dynamic events so it might be better than XI.

I am on the fence odds are I wont get it because quite simply I dont have the time and I dont want to pay a sub for about 10 hours a month of gaming.

I do like the look of it though and a FF MMO has always appealed to me I never got to play the last one as my PC couldnt run it at the time and much later on I just couldnt be bothered as I heard XIV was coming out.

I am glad its not F2P though I hate that model it really turns me away anyway I may get this game later on when I actually get some spare time.

I'll get it when it goes f2p. Nothing about it so far has made me anxious to get into it. Though its almost mathematically impossible for it to be any worse than Neverwinter so I'm optimistic.

I'm pleased to say it's very different from XI. Going solo is totally an option. I got to level 15 in around 9 or so hours of gameplay. And I've seen people do it quicker than that. Quests, FATE events, and dungeon bosses, are the fastest way to get exp. No need to grind mobs.

Probably not, since it doesn't seem to go F2P. It looks alright but there's no real reason for me to play it. Played the beta and while it's a solid game, it's not enough for me to pay a monthly fee. To be fair, pretty much no MMO is.
