I work at a fairly expensive restaurant right now, just because I got sick of doing computer tech support for the last decade, and it works out better for my school schedule. But as soon as people around the restaurant found out that I used to fix computers, they were all over me like stink on shit.

Of course friends and family ask questions, but after 10 years of it, they've gotten to realize how annoying I find it, and just ask when it gets desperation time. Not every single time their computer locks up, or some such thing. It's just a matter of setting your boundaries.

As for work related tech support stories, there's so many of them over such a long period of time, that I don't even find them funny anymore.

My room-mates and several of their friends constantly turn to me for assistance when it comes to electronics of any kind, be it 360s, iPods, or television sets. It can be somewhat annoying at times, but I do somehow enjoy proving my own superior intelligence to men who seem to assume that I somehow lack the capability to properly plug in an extension cord.

I swear, the men I know have a brain the size of an acorn... This isn't, of course, to say that all men are idiots - The contrary is true, actually. But I do take pleasure in outsmarting them...

And dominating them on Live.

My extended family has 'basic' to 'fair' knowledge so it's rarely too much of a problem. The problem is, despite me telling them this over and over again; I am NOT a computer wwwyzzerdd (catch the referance?). I am only slightly above average on my knowledge basically i know how to check the internet for answers or fiddle around guessing. I've told them this about 100 times but to no avail. My roomate however, is very very good with computers, he used to work in networking. So he's become his and my family's *****.

I am *sort of*. I fix about half of all tech issuse in the house(unfreezing the screen, resetting the modem) and the other half of problems are fixed by my mom. Kinda weird, I know, but it's true. She's really tech savy its pretty crazy.

Another ridiculous thing I hear stupidly often: "Ok I closed the internet. Now what?"

Whenever anything goes remotely wrong in my house, I fix it. From simply explaining how a remote works tyo my 60 year old granma to Wipe my father's computer of viruses and re0installing every thing, I'm there. It seriusly sucks.

I am always the family tech *****, but I have turned into a nice little business on the side.
I've been thinking about that actually.

If you don't mind me asking, how'd you start it? And how does it work?

Yep, im the biggest computer nerd in my family, so whenever my mom has a problem (like finding a certain key on the keyboard), i have to explain to her where it's at, mostly just extremely basic stuff, though when im helping friends it gets a little bit harder, but still nothing advanced, like upgrading drivers for the graphics card, re-installing Windows after a computer has crashed and stuff like that.

Yep. They call me and wanna know why this, that and the other thing doesn't work--usually because my step-dad tries to fix it first. But then, on the other hand, if anything goes wrong with any computer in the house--that's also my fault, for some reason.

My brother and sister think I am huge nerd for liking computers more then shopping.

High five!
anyway, I am normally the one who has to fix the computer or internet modem in my family. What I don't like about it is that my parents blame me for everything that goes wrong with it...

Yeah... Just because i can use a computer and game and such i'm automatically some sort of techno-magician capable of bending a computer to my will!!! -establishing shot with cheeky pose-
It's annoying.

Hell, i dunno how to get rid of this virus lurking on my pc right now (though, i'm not motivated because it's been doing fuck-all to my computer.)

I am the techie *****. I hate it sometimes.

I'm extremely knowledgeable about PCs. I work for the Geek Squad. But there are times (which are becoming more and more frequent) where I wish I knew how to do something that people didn't need, like being a potter, or a pepsi taste-tester.

Half the phone numbers on my cell are people who only call me when they have an issue with their PC. I'm ok to fix it for them, I tend to have a lot of time and I've created a lot of scripts that automate some processes. But it STILL bugs the hell out of me. I feel like I'm being used.

There are other times when people will ask me about Car Stereo systems, Home Theater systems, or their alarm-clock. I used to tell them a bit of what I knew, because I know a little bit about car stereo, and home theater systems just due to being somewhat tech savy. But they assumed I knew how to mount and run lines and stuff. Now, I just say I have no clue.
Even worse is when they ask about something like a web application, piece of software, or how to do something on facebook (I don't have one of those vile spawns of evil). Once again, no clue.

Something recently that irked me, was my Professor, with whom I have 3 classes with this semester; sent me an e-mail asking if I would provide my services for his neighbor. I understand WHY my professor did this. If he fixed it, that neighbor thinks he has a 24 hour tech support line. If I fixed it, I'm just a passing student who is somewhat knowledgeable about PCs.

The problem is, nobody is a problem solver anymore. If something goes awry nobody wants to figure out why it is, or attempt to fix it. I mean a little bit of google-ing can go a hell of a long way to fixing any sort of software issue you are having. Also READING THE FUCKING MANUAL HELPS.

After working for the geek squad for about a year and a half, I've come to the point where I don't care about taking someone's money for fixing their computer, I don't care if they lost the pictures they took 14 years ago, I don't care if you want to talk to my manager. I mean I'll charge someone 50 dollars to run 4 command lines to fix their computer. They can whine, they can complain, but I now have your money.

I like to think of it like this:
A store has inventory that they sell for a certain price. I also have inventory that I sell for a certain price, that inventory is my time, my patience, and my problem solving ability. So now, anybody other than my parents who need tech support know, and are willing, to pay for my services.

Yes, Yes I am. But I wouldn't use the term ***** for it. Although it gets irritating when people call me for the most obvious problems. Oh, and I have to use iTunes for my mom's iPod. HAHAHAHHA
