I was just poking around the interwebs before work when I came across this article on the front page of Something Awful.

http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/google-yahtzee-whocares.php (a little NSFW if you count a handful of 'bad words')

So, my fellow Escapists, it's an article relevant to most people on this website (as it concerns this website) and I wanted to see what my fellow forum goers thought.

I think you and SA are mistaking this for the Yahtzee fanclub. I couldn't care less.

I wasn't intending this to be a call to arms to defend Yahtzee. He does take some shots at The Escapist that I felt were unjustified however.

Although Yahtzee is hilarious (still), most people who use these forums don't care that much, its not a Yahtzee fanclub, its a community of Gamers. And anyway, the article praises Yahtzee:

"The fact is, Yahtzee is a rare genius, an Internet celebrity that didn't get famous for baring his breasts or creating mind-numbing drama. Ben Croshaw is a talented, witty, and delightful fellow from down under, and that's what's so goddamn infuriating about him. You can't really find any valid reason to hate this guy no matter how hard you try. At least if he were female we could accuse her of being an attention whore or something."

So what was this thread about, lets face it, unless you like a great communitys theresnot much else on The Escapist thats half as well known as Yahtzee (Unforgotten Realms was already on Youtube)

Well, I might be offended about that if it wasn't coming from SA. Those guys aren't more than a few steps up from 4chan in my opinion.

This is what that troubled me

That's insulting
"All this means is money in the bank for Yahtzee and his employers, who nobody has ever heard of before they signed him. Seriously, did anyone even know the Escapist existed before this guy started putting his videos on their web site? I still haven't read a single goddamn thing on there and I believe I would have a hard time finding anyone who has. I'm pretty sure Yahtzee has never read an article on The Escapist either."

Edit: I never took an article that didn't supports its facts...
Even less on

Idiot: I think it was like that before.
Me: Can you prove it?
Idiot: Um......
Me: Exactly, take some facts before making a statement.

My favourite part is where he claims that no one at the Escapist deserves anything apart from Yahtzee, having previously admitted that he's never read anything on here.

It's a little hard to take him seriously after that.

It's hard to take a lot of SA seriously. It's a humor site, so long as it's funny, anything said within is justifiable. I don't agree with it, but that's usually the template.

Interesting nonetheless, I s'pose.

My point, just phrased better. It's just organized trolling and best ignored.

It's true. I don't get all the SA hate; it's not like they don't admit they're often hypocrites and the whole site isn't full of self-deprication. To be honest that article has a point, the "hating internet celebrities" is a fairly pointless experience. It just increases their fame. In "hating" them, you just give them attention.

Everything in the video section could disappear one day and I would not notice. And that article can go die in a hole.

Admitting that you're an idiot is not the same thing as not being an idiot.

Um..I think folks may be missing the tongue-in-cheek nature I see clearly running rampant through that article. The author seems to be poking fun at the denizens of SA's overwhelming desire to hate everything and anything. I'm not taking sentences like "You can't really find any valid reason to hate this guy no matter how hard you try. At least if he were female we could accuse her of being an attention whore or something." too seriously...are you?

The article's main thrust -- that people love to hate Yahtzee simply because others love him -- is entirely valid. As for his claim that no-one had ever heard of The Escapist before Yahtzee showed up...well, that's obviously untrue, but it's a pretty common perception.

I thought it was actually pretty amusing, overall.

The guy writing is schizo anyway, I mean, he can't decide what to defend: The point AGAINST Yahtzee AND the Escapist, The point WITH Yahtzee AGAINST the Escapist, or AGAINST the fucking INTERNET. The guy may need to go back to school for a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if he was only allowed to write on SA because he's got that whole minimum stupidity thing down packed.

As for the videos, I like them. A lot. I came to this because I watched some of Yahtzee's vids and I've been looking for a gamer community for a long time. But honestly, people need to find a way to live without having to search the web for something to hate.

*shrug*

SA is doing what SA does. I find it hard to be upset by it. Some of it's funny. My biggest problem with SA is that too much of the humor is derivative of Lowtax's style ("It's great, and by great I mean terrible!"), which is why I stopped reading it. Forums are still good for information about almost anything though, if you know where to look (Or have a friend who does).

I wouldn't take anything negative they say about Yahtzee or us to heart. They're just doing their style of comedy. Welcome to notoriety on the internet.

It's sort of a mixture I think. The SA people do seem to realize that what they're doing may not always be terribly intelligent or clever. But if I know anything about them, they love to troll and piss people off, and that's just childish in my opinion.

You know... I really tried to sit this one out, but skrew it:

I'm with susan A. on this one, Yahtzee got where he is because he's a brilliant individual, and if others want to say that he put the escapist on the map, fine, why should we care?

We pride ourselves in our maturity, how about we show that now by not concerning ourselves with this guy's article
