As a community, are we becoming too harsh on those who make mistakes?

Only started using this site this week and have noticed that in pretty much every thread you get one guy who feels the need to be sarcastic and be little the OPs point.

How can you tell between a person who doesn't care and one who makes mistakes?
If someone's first post is a blatant repost, troll or poorly spelt versus thread, then they haven't taken the briefest moment from their day to try and acquire the taboos and accepted policies of the forum. Mistakes tend to be less serious, of a practical nature and concern things like double/triple posts, no-texts and a lax attitude to spelling.

The nature of the mistake is a good indicator of whether this person is here to use the forums as a toy or a place to foster community.

Such arrogance, it astounds me. If you're joking it is lost on me.

People pointing out flaws in your spelling is a good thing, it means you are less likely to make it a habit.

More moderators.
Wow...so, is there like a 'special moderator squad' that go round dressed in black with helmets and shoulder pads made of skulls and stuff like that?

Just don't ask who moderates the moderator moderators.

Look, if you think we're harsh now, you ain't seen anything. A few months ago, the mods would've ripped most of the new members to shreds considering almost all of them:
1)Insult people and cultures on a regular basis
2)Can't seem to grasp the concept of good grammar and spelling
3)Don't understand basic forum Etiquette
And as a result, most members who joined in December or after said month are total idiots or assholes.
There are beacons of light out there though, I find you, the creator of this thread to be one of them, there's also Dastardos, Vid20, the list isn't a long one, but it's there.

If I wasn't too lazy to dig it up, I would direct you to an incident that happened several weeks ago.
Do you all remember that new member ihatefullmetalalchemist? Well, some could call it a mistake, I call it one of the worst forms of trolling.
He necroed 5 threads with brilliant contributions such as: Yes
either
No
maybe
Ah yes, the wonders never cease.
When called on it, he replied: sorry im new.
And that's what really gets me, just because he is new, basic forum etiquette doesn't apply? Apparently, for instead of a perma-ban, he got a 3 day slap on the wrist for one of the most serious crimes on the forums.

In an ideal world the forum wouldn't need moderators. I think is to some extent the ops point (please correct me if I am wrong Inverse Skies). There is simply no need to attack or be offensive to someone else merely because this is the internet. It seems to have become part of forum culture these days to behave like a jackass whenever one gets a keyboard and finds someone who disagrees with you about anything, how about we try to reverse that trend?

That's sort of where I'm coming from. It's not just up to the moderators to police the community, we as a community ourselves have to be responsible for our own actions and support members, both experienced and new. If we can do that then the Escapist will be a better place for all to contribute.

dont make that into a subject. i was repeatedly harrased by a moderator so i put up a topic asking the community about the responsibilities given to moderators (including a mention of www.ebaulmsworld.com the forums there are the reason moderators exist) and their reply? after a short time and many replies a short "We moderate ourselves" note and a blocked thread. if they had banned me that would of ended badly...

who mderated the moderators? they moderate themselves *snigger*

and i ment it would have been a big conspiracy if the moderators had banned someone for promoting discussion on the pros and cons of moderators. i was actually pro-mod, but against them each having god-like powers to ban people without the support of a few more random moderators.
Let me get this straight. You got banned at ebaumsworld for going public with an argument with a moderator, now all moderators are some sort of conspiracy keeping you from being truly free on the internet? Excuse me if I don't sympathize.

I think you have to draw a line somewhere, I very rarely join forums, but I do read them a lot and have picked up enough to get by.

But what does annoy me is people picking up on lil spelling mistakes and even typo's, Instead of contributing to the actual post they turn it into a tit-for-tat scenario and the posters point gets lost.

If it isn't, it should be.

The only thing i wish the moderators here did more is that occasional delightful pre-lock post that Nil, or yourself Wilson, grants us with.

I don't see it as arrogant, because nothing could be further from the truth: They show you care, and are/can seem human. Also, they amuse me.

I think the mods are becoming more lenient, which isn't really a bad thing. New members deserve a chance to learn ,not just get shouted at if they make one or two newbie mistakes.

no, and i just ralised how bad my spelling was in that last post.
i opened a topic hear about the need for a limit to be put on the powers of moderators. so that if MOD-A wants to ban SMITH then he has to get approval from 1/3 of the other MODs. or something. because the system is open to abuse if someone decides to ban the people he doesn't like for no reason. i was at one point harrased by a MOD on this site, not enough to get pissed, but enough to get annoyed. i also had seen some unfair lockings and banings. i rounded it out by directing them to ebaums world to view a site without any MODs. ebaums world fourms are full of the most racist and offencive comments possible, it really is sickening the 100th time you see "f**in ni**a HAHAHA!" on every "funny" picture sowing misfortune. i dont go there anymore, it makes me feel dirty.
Then your recourse is to pack your bags and leave the site. I ran foul of moderator abuse myself in a particular forum. After appealing to some of the more senior moderators they apologised and promised the situation would be rectified, and it was for a few weeks. Then it started again. It wasn't my place to argue again so I simply left.

Forums are privately owned and maintained places. You are on someone elses time in them, and have only the level of power as the owners allow you to have. If someone says "these are the rules" and you disagree with them, then that particular place is probably not for you.
