As a community, are we becoming too harsh on those who make mistakes?

In an ideal world the forum wouldn't need moderators. I think is to some extent the ops point (please correct me if I am wrong Inverse Skies). There is simply no need to attack or be offensive to someone else merely because this is the internet. It seems to have become part of forum culture these days to behave like a jackass whenever one gets a keyboard and finds someone who disagrees with you about anything, how about we try to reverse that trend?
That's sort of where I'm coming from. It's not just up to the moderators to police the community, we as a community ourselves have to be responsible for our own actions and support members, both experienced and new. If we can do that then the Escapist will be a better place for all to contribute.
How about a community charter? An Escapist code of honourable conduct between postees? Something that breaking will not have any consequences other than loosing the respect of the rest of the Escapees and having to earn that respect again? As I understand it the problems you are talking about are not the kinds of things that contravine the rules, but just the general hostility that some people display that can make people feel a bit uncomfortable about joining/getting involved in discussion.

Well now that's the next challenge we face as a community. How do we go about solving these issues? As they seem to have been going on for quite some time now. And yes, seeing as they don't break any rules per se it is hard for the moderators to come down on them. But they shouldn't have to, we as a community should be governing ourselves like that.

I think this topic might be too hard for just you or I to solve ourselves. Prehaps if we start a discussion between some of the more senior members of this site as well as with the moderators we might be able to come up with a community enforced code of conduct?

If I were looking to solve a problem such as this in say, the workforce that is what I would do, form a committee to discuss the possible solutions to the problem and to come up with a code of conduct. Prehaps we should start looking at something such as that?

Actually, according to the Mods, it's their Job.
When Fish Food Carl was banned for snapping and going crazy, the reason he went crazy is because the mods weren't doing enough and wouldn't let him help to police them.
Besides, I've tried to teach the new members, every polite suggestion I made through PM was met with something along the lines of: Suck a Cock and Die, I don't care what you think! or the always original: FUCK OFF AND LEAVE ME ALONE YOU ******!
Those are direct quotes from three members.
In short, they can't take constructive criticism, and so helping them is difficult.

Also, I find it a bit odd that someone who joined last month made a thread like this, considering you know almost nothing of what the forums were like a year ago, and how large of a decline they are in now, largely due to the moderator's lax standards as of late.

The only thing i wish the moderators here did more is that occasional delightful pre-lock post that Nil, or yourself Wilson, grants us with.

I don't see it as arrogant, because nothing could be further from the truth: They show you care, and are/can seem human. Also, they amuse me.
I've never been banned so I ask this in ignorance, but do the mods contact you in any way, shape or form to explain why, or do they just say "banned for xx,yy post" and make you work out why?

They do indeed, in my first two weeks I got a one day ban for being an idiot.
Someone was once banned for being a dousche during the reign of the Lord God Joe.
They tell you these things through PM, or they make a note in your post.

That is completely true, I know nothing outside of the month I've been here. But as Knight Templar pointed out, if I've been here a month and noticed this sort of behavior that can't stand good for the community as a whole. I enjoy posting on this site and believe that everyone should be given an oppurtunity to express themselves when they first join and make some mistakes because they're new without being attacked for such an indiscretion. Or even senior members who accidently hit 'enter' when making a new thread. It happens.

I still believe as a community we can do something about it (see last post). It may seem like I'm sticking my nose into an area it doesn't belong because I'm new, but I'm only trying to help because I think this site should be a positive experience for all.

Aside: That's awful the responses you got from those people. If they wrote that in a post they would have been banned long ago.

Cheers. Curiosity relieved.

Edit: Just thought of this, but how many thank yous have you seen on here for answering a posted question? I have to admit there are a few that do, but I have to say, I don't remember the vast majority doing it. Sorry if i am wrong. I don't mean to offend.

I recently made a thread about artwork by people on the site, and talking about Deviant Art itself. The Necroswanson pointed out soon afterwards that it was a repeat thread from one that had been done a while before, and was by no means dead, although quite old. I subsequently posted on the older thread and got involved there, although my own thread is still active (as far as I'm aware). I got a tiny amount of stick for it, but in the end it was useful and I thank The Necroswanson for pointing that out to me. Sometimes being harsh is alright, after all, you have to be cruel to be kind, sometimes. However, in some instances I've seen people take it too far and make some nasty comments to newcomers. Granted this is very rare, and I've only seen it on very rare occasions, but it has happened. The moderators are generally quite helpful in that regard though, I can honestly say I've never seen anything from the moderators that wasn't either helpful or relevant to a forum topic.

Apologies, I've been venting about the new members in a thread that was about grammar and spelling mistakes.
I've never been a big grammar Nazi, but when it hurts my eyes to read the post, I draw the line.
Also, I wasn't trying to insult you for being new, I was just ranting.

One more thing though: If an older member is a grammar Nazi and you don't agree with what they say: Do not respond to their post with something insulting them for being a grammar Nazi or calling them a troll, that will not lead to anything good. Being a Grammar Nazi is NOT trolling, it is an attempt to better the community, and just because most of the new idiots think it is trolling, doesn't mean it is, you intelligent new members get that through your heads!

Yes and no. In society there is no 'ignorance' defense when someone commits a felony. New subscribers (myself included) have plenty of opportunities to read forum guidelines and scan existing posts before succumbing to the urge to hit the 'post' button.

And see, here we come back to my: ihatefullmetalalchemist case.
Being new is not a defense because he could have taken the time to read the guidelines or at least the forums a bit before necroeing 5 threads with 1 word posts.

Also, we should not ban people for bad grammar and spelling as long as it is bearable.
If they can't go 1 post with typing in lolspeak, they should be banned, otherwise, fine.
We don't normally ban or even Prob people for accidentally hitting enter, our issue is with people who either can't seem to use the edit button, or don't fix the post once they've made it, leaving it (no text)

Although I make threads rarely, I've never liked those beetches who come to the thread, and for example when someone says "Tell me your favorite movie", and then they answer, "My favorite movie is This Thread Has Been Made: The Movie."

Hahah, very funny! /sarcasm

I want to kill Hate those guys.
No offense to anyone who does it, but seriously. It's kind of annoying to watch, especially when it's a new member.

I understand that the Search Button is difficult to see, but they should at least think: Hmmm, these forums have been around for 3 years now, someone has probably already made a: "What is your favorite movie" Thread

That was just an example. I really wasn't willing to go search for a thread that has been bit the curse of the DejaNazies.

no, and i just ralised how bad my spelling was in that last post.
i opened a topic hear about the need for a limit to be put on the powers of moderators. so that if MOD-A wants to ban SMITH then he has to get approval from 1/3 of the other MODs. or something. because the system is open to abuse if someone decides to ban the people he doesn't like for no reason. i was at one point harrased by a MOD on this site, not enough to get pissed, but enough to get annoyed. i also had seen some unfair lockings and banings. i rounded it out by directing them to ebaums world to view a site without any MODs. ebaums world fourms are full of the most racist and offencive comments possible, it really is sickening the 100th time you see "f**in ni**a HAHAHA!" on every "funny" picture sowing misfortune. i dont go there anymore, it makes me feel dirty.
Those things will make it very hard to keep the forums clean if someone decides to try and raid it.
And please start using capitalization!

You're clearly wrong you f*cking idiot. Ban him tbh.
Do you see what I did there?
Seriously though, I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I would say that people are very quick to jump on someones back about a mistake, but I can't stand all the repeat threads and pointless ones.

I'd have to disagree; when it's done right it can bring a smile to all involved. I will however agree that the example you gave was a little blunt and therefore unfunny.
