I think most women can find better things to do than play games, more interesting things to do than play games, most women are already playing games that are so interesting that controlling a virtual avatar is not high on their list of things to do. You only get a kick out of controlling a virtual avatar if you have a penchant for escape or some similar neurosis that makes you want to disconnect from the real world to some extent.

More later.
so playing video games is the result of being damaged or sad in some way?....I don't buy it

you know what?..."generally" most people DON'T find better things to do than play games..its just taken up by other things..web surfing, Facebook, reality Television depending on their hobies of coarse

and what makes women so friggen special in that regard? what are these "better" things that specifically women do?

I treat games like any other form of entertainment like comics or movies...not to "escape" the real world...but as an experience to be had

My sammich crafting skills are far more refined and spectacular than yours can ever be! You know why?! BECAUSE I AM A MAN!

As a man I get a gender bonus of +2 to all of my attributes which gives me a natural advantage in everything other than popping out babies!

You see, despite being better at making sammiches men prefer women to do it because, hey, you got to give them some responsibility right?

...

And it is at this point I realize that I have parodied sexism more than I have seriously debated it on this site >.>

Crikey, I had no idea me killing 10 minutes on Peggle or trying to play Halo with my housemate was such a contentious and important issue.

I'll feel very important next time I start Steam, that's for sure.

Er... Sorry. What was this thread about agin?

*re-reads the above quote*

Well, I've never had anyone comment or act surprised when they find out I'm a woman who plays video games. Not sure why they would. It's a bit like acting surprised that a man watches TV. Statistically women watch a lot more TV than men do and men play a lot more video games than women do, but they're both such massively common past-times that this hardly matters.

What does sometimes surprise people is that I'm a woman who works as software developer.

Sorry, lost my train of thought there.

I think your comment illustrates very well why campaigns to get more girls into science/maths/gaming/amateur-robotics are a little bit silly. The girls who want to do it will do it without any special encouragement. Sometimes certain hobbies/careers/etc. are skewed in a certain direction because they really do appeal more often to that gender!

Yeah... The first game I played was FF6 when I was... 9? On my sisters SNES. Most people think it's awesome that I play, but I did get a lot of "Do you actually play, or just work here?" when I worked at a video game store. Many people seemed shocked that I could carry on a conversation about the merits of turn based battle systems, or that I know who Jonathon Blow is, or about the evils of Activision.

But honestly, the backlash of being female is much worse in the Magic: The Gathering scene. Most gamers are cool, just surprised. Most MTG players hit on me. And a good many need to bathe. That's not a stereotype, that's an observation.

And I also don't see why men shouldn't be held to the standards of "don't be an abusive, pandering, sexist asshole". And perhaps you don't think that, but that's how it has come off at times. It is as much the job of men to make women welcome as it is women's job to push themselves into the community - if not more so.
Let me guess, your age is >30, right? Because what a load of entitled BS this statement is. It's not my job to do anything just because I was born with a Y chromosome, any more than it's the job of women to get back into the kitchen because they were born with 2 Xs. This whole thread is some of the whiniest, "poor me, the world isn't what I think it is, and it should adjust itself to me rather than me adjusting to it" Millenial bitching I have ever seen.

If you don't like how things are, change them to the extent that you can, don't cry about how other people should bend over backwards to pander to your fluffy little Kumbaya worldview, because that will never, ever happen.
Uh, no.
I'm 18, and it is everyone's job to not be dicks to eachother: the point is that having a Y chromosome doesn't exempt anyone from that. Those with said Y chromosomes just happen to be in the position of greater power here.
And I really don't get how someone can complain about people wanting to "adjust" the world in one sentence, then say that you should "change [it] to the extent" they can. Um, isn't that the same thing? My trying to point out to more and more people that "guess what, you can also try not being a jerk to people" and "guess what, we're all human and really ought to get along" is me working to change things bit by bit - just as much as living up to those standards is me doing the same.

EDIT: And if you've got to "bend over backwards" to be kind to people, then that is just sad.
Again, Millenial, it isn't my job to do anything just because some whiny youth(or old person) thinks I should. There were dicks when I was young almost half a century ago, there were dicks when my parents were young, and there are dicks now. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I don't want my competitions to be some wussy little "GG bro"-fest where everybody gets a trophy even if they lose, I want them to have bite. If you don't like that, go play somewhere else, and stop worrying about what other people are doing. There are plenty of heavily admin-ed servers out there that prohibit being a big stinky meanie head, enough so that flower children can play in peace and leave the people who want aggression and shit-talking in their MP somewhere too.

There aren't a whole lot of people on the escapist having a problem with women.

I have heard a lot of things about this site, both from the people on it and from other forums, but really?

Cry feminism and let slip the dogs of war!

It's sometimes quite casual, but it's definitely there.

For example, when was the last time you saw a thread about 'Feminist Group attack [insert poor downtrodden male group] and that's terrible. Discuss'

Now when was the last time you saw a thread about 'Misogyinst group attacks [insert literally any female] and that's terrible. Discuss.'

Anytime a hint of feminism even comes up on this forum dozens of people will respond with 'well we all know that feminists are often extreme in their views and beliefs' Really? Because my mother's a feminist, she has a lot of friends who are feminists. I don't think you'd ever call any of them 'extreme.'

What it shows is an underlying revulsion/misunderstanding/ignorance about women, women's groups, feminism, and almost all things related. This site is lousy with people poised to make a 'girl gamers think they're entitled to love because of their gender' comment or 'there's nothing wrong with sexism in comics/games/movies because occasionally a man will be shown as not capable as well' or even 'it is absolutely fine to make jokes about women being raped because I find the subject hilarious.'

I only came to see the rampant pages of hate-speak which I know are coming after your comment, but when I saw your comment I just couldn't resist. The users on this site have massive problems with women, and they aren't going away anytime soon.

Certainly it doesn't make it your job to do it, but it seems a lot like whining to complain that I am of the opinion that it should be everyone's job to not be a prick to people.

And there is nothing unacceptable about a certain degree of competition and animosity. To say that just because I think people shouldn't be dicks to one another that I think everyone should get to see their score as number one is just a ridiculous stereotype. There is a difference between competition and aggression, and people being dicks to belittle and shun other people.
Like I mentioned earlier, I would get into plenty of feuds with an old friend of mine on the server we played on. You know what we didn't do? She didn't call be a noob, and I didn't call her a slut. What we did do? Taunt eachother, t-bag eachother (well, she argued hers wasn't t-bagging, but), and subtly brag when we got the upper hand on one another.
If you want a server where people make baseless insults in preference to actually playing the game with people (you know, trying to make the sorts of insults that get people out of the game), then go ahead, more power to your freedoms - it just shouldn't be the norm.

That Critical Miss comic from a few weeks back was making that point.

Seemed to go over a lot of people's heads, though.

I think it also misses a point though: there are a lot of males who might very much enjoy being cheerleaders - if it wasn't made into something for girls to do almost exclusively. The ones who do it do so in the face of other people's expectations and desires, and I'd bet you anything that they aren't free of ridicule as they do.
Being a cheerleader may appeal more to women, but that might just be because it was made for women, and we've taught males from the start that they aren't supposed to be cheerleaders. I don't see why women would want to cheer on their team any more than men, and certainly not in those percentages (something like 94% against 6%, from what I've seen.

I would guess that's because dance (the closest thing I can think of to cheerleading - we don't really see it much in this country) seems to appeal to more girls than it does boys. The ballroom dancing society at my uni was about 5:1 women to men. (A little inconvenient, as it meant the women had to be able to dance both parts!)

Of course, nobody should ever be told that they can't do something (whether that "something" is a hobby, a career or just wearing a dress!) on the basis of their gender (unless they're a man who wants to give birth). But a gender bias alone is not proof that there's a problem.

I just see nothing that looks to be clear evidence that there is something inherently different between men and women that makes one group like, say, cheerleading or dancing more than the other. It seems much more likely to me that the different numbers are evidence of what our culture says should be the case (and that what it says should be the case is slowly changing).
There may be some degree of tangible difference, but if there is it is overshadowed by the much more apparent cultural causes, which are evidenced by the reactions plenty of people still have to things like that, and people's personal experiences.
