About a million years ago, before I was old enough to have executive control over the TV remote, I pointed out to my mother that the braindead lowlifes in Neighbours were guilty of holding controllers wrong (ie. trying to play a game while clearly only pressing Start, Select and the shoulder buttons on a PSOne controller) and that they were throwing themselves around like twats.

My mum countered with a very simple observation: "you know that they're playing computer games just from what they're holding. To me, that could be anything".

Since then, I assumed this overacting in most Western media was for the benefit of elderly people like my Mummy XD

I know what you mean, saw this on an episode of scrubs once, can't really remember the details exactly, but I do remember them saying they were playing co-op and it was clearly single player. They also make many halo references when its clearly not halo, apparently its actually Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, but I don't really know that myself. Still, they show quite a lot of screen time, and for such a popular show, its quite a big mistake...

I've been watching The Big Bang Theory. They have done both, they get it right and they get it wrong.

They've showed the guys Wii bowling and it showed the screen and it was Wii Sports bowling.

But, they have also talked a lot in the show about have Halo night.
Though anytime they show them playing it, they don't show the screen and the sounds are all wrong. The explosions sound weird. In one instance, they invited the girl across the hall, Penny, to join them, and she turned out to be really good at it. They showed sounds of instances where she kept shooting her competition in the head (obviously meaning the sniper rifle), and the sound for the sniper rifle was not a Halo sniper rifle sound.

I'm betting it is the answer already given that the show producers don't want to pay for the rights to show the games on their shows.
Why even mention the game by name then? Anyway, that show makes my fucking blood boil.
Even with the flaws, I'm not going to let something like that ruin a show for me. I still think it is hilarious.

I finally finished everything up to current. I would have to say the funniest episode is in Season 4, it's Episode 2: The Cruciferous Vegetable Amplification.

In western culture, we would call that product placement, its often looked down appon as far as artistic value is concerned. I mean my friend is a fan of the simpsons, but one thing he will hate about said new episodes of the show is how Bart and Lisa now have cell phones. Although realistic it just doesn't jive with the show.

It's probably due to the Japanese holding animation in higher regard. In America, animation is cartoons, and that's either for kids or for comedy; in either case not something where effort is lavished on fine details.

One thing that impressed me in Death Note was where Light has a clock. Not just a generic analog clock, but one of those Atomic clocks with weather and the time in LCDS. And each and every second was animated out. For a thing in the background.

The West has a long ways to go before animation has anywhere near the level of prestige and cultural acceptance as it does in Japan.

And don't get me wrong. I don't like Anime either, but this phenomenon still interests me.
Either? I think quite a lot of people on here enjoy anime <.<

OT: You are far more observant than is natural. Any examples where you've seen this?
"This is level 20, OK! This is the kingdom of Galagar!"
To be fair, the show does explain that these guys have mental disabilities(they aren't blaming their behavior on games) and about that laughably fake game? Probably something made on the cheap to avoid copyright issues or something.

OT: I've seen shows get it right and others get it wrong.

In another Law and Order episode, some kid had somehow "modded" his PS2 copy of Prince of Persia so that beating a "level" (actually just a clip of the chariot race sequence) unlocked some personal information he wanted to hide or something. It was pretty goofy.

On the other hand, on 30 Rock, they mention videogames frequently, and get it right most of the time. For example, there's several scenes in 30 Rock where some characters say they're going to play Halo, and then you can see on the TV that they are actually playing Halo. Right controllers and everything. And another time, one of the characters recieves a copy of Bioshock as a gift, and they say something like "Alright! Bioshock!" while actually holding a copy of the game. I was impressed.

Thats an awesome point.

Asia>West?
Please...
As a professional forum poster, I have hardly any experience of asian TV and therefore no real opinion on the original topic, therefore I stormed in with an irrelevant point of my own making instead. Sorry about that :D The west is generally bloody awful at it tho, even on factual programs when they're demonstrating a new video game, they get someone in to do it who'd find a light switch a complex controller, and then film them trying to play it.
