I have never shot one of those, would be awesome
Definitely, I'd love to fire the McMillan Tac-50, if I ever got to choose a .50 BMG rifle to fire. Gotta love a bolt-action rifle.

In a rifle its not loud at all, doesnt make the ears ring, louder in a pistol.

Louder than a human hand clap though, it will damage your hearing over time so if you get one I would use ear protection.
Alright, I'll keep that in mind, don't want to loose my hearing :D

mine is a 10-22, its accepts magazines of different sizes, the largest mag I have is 30 round, though one can purchase 50 round versions
You use a magazine-fed .22? My friend has one which holds the bullets in a chamber under the barrel, kinda like a pump-action shotgun. Also, can your .22 fire special buckshot rounds? My friend has a box of .22 buckshot that apparently can be fired out of his rifle.

EDIT: Nevermind, my bad :p

Kansas, 2 states north of texas
Ah, well I live beside the Texas of Canada, Alberta, I've had good times there. Lots of guns, rednecks, farms, and ATV's.

Ummm... however trashy this sounds, I need to get rid of some "Varmints" (IE Rabbits & Squirrels) and was wondering whether I should use a pellet rifle or a 22.
.22LR or .22 short imo..i'll wait for mathurin to chime in

Was the recoil bad on the AK-47? The 7.62mm round looks like a beast compared to the .22 round.

Depends where you are removing them from, I assume you are talking about short ranges, if it is in town then buy a high powered pellet rifle, they make .22 caliber pellet rifles.

If its out of town, use whatever you have, if you are buying one you can get a decent marlin for less than $200

under-barrel magazines are common as well, but yeah, mine is a 10-22 and uses detachable magazines.

They dont make buckshot for .22, they make birdshot, and yeah, pretty much all .22s can use the birdshot round, but its kinda useless

Oddly enough I fired a full auto AK-74 at a military firing range in Kazakhstan, a friend of the commander was a friend of mine, it was fun.

it was an AK-74, shoots a 5.45mm round, but I have fired stronger than that, the 7.62X39 is not so strong really.

Do gun owners feel threatened in some way??? Why else would you buy a gun in a rich western country? I mean your not residing in the Congo are you?

Cool, how long does it take you to slide a new magazine in? 20 seconds maybe?

Oh, ok. Well, I wiki-ed it, and "birdshot" just looks like a small buckshot round.

My bad, see edit :p

Anyhow, the 7.62mm looks quite large for an assault rifle round. Doesn't a Mosin Nagant fire a similar round, just longer?

P.S. How good is a Mosin Nagant? Those guns are so stylish, yet practical, if a little powerful.

i don't know if we're talking about the same thing but here they call the .22 shotshells 'ratshot'
used in warehouses on rats and bats :D

the finnish ones are apparently quite good, handpicked barrels or somesuch.
in general they can be a bit rough depending where they were made, but hey they're cheap.
i have a scoped 91/30 coming in the next couple of days actually..

The shells with the plastic tip filled with metal balls? Yeah, he has something like that. I can't say that firing tiny metal balls at hundreds of feet per second in a tight area seems like a great idea. Especially if expensive merchandise is nearby :p

Isn't that the Russian one used in WW2? I can't say I'm very good with scopes, I usually can't "zero in" properly, and send the bullet WAY to the side of where I though I was aiming. Video-games make zooming in so much simpler then it is in real life.

haha the ratshot does minimal damage so it's all good.
yeah mosin nagants are russian, but the Finn's and Romanians adopted them and built copies with varying degree of quality.
the carbines have 20" barrels and permanent bayonets that flip forward haha. popular brush guns.

you do use a bench when zeroing in, yeah? :p

Oh those Russians and their wildly popular guns.

I can't imagine a bayonet having much use when it comes to target shooting or hunting, unless you're planning to get some friends together and organize a bayonet charge of a deer herd. You wouldn't want to dull the bayonet by using it to forge a trail through the brush.

Not usually, I usually fire from the shoulder when standing, and occasionally, from a prone position. I once tried using a skateboard as a bipod when I was at my redneck cousins house. It worked surprisingly well.

Pretty much, but the difference is bigger than you think.
If you ask me, 7.62x39 is a great calibre for semi-autos. I just love my AK and SKS.

As for the mosin? Cheap, powerful, accurate, and kicks like a mule. I take mine every time I go shooting.

Is the slug more or less the same? Just more propellant? I assume the third from the right is a tracer round? What does the green paint indicate?

I'm gonna try my gun knowledge skills here and name the rounds from left to right. Expect most of my guesses to be wrong, as I'm trying without Wikipedia or any assistance at all :p

9mm round, .45 caliber round, .50 caliber AE round, 5.56mm round, 7.62x39mm round, 7.62x56mm round.

Yeah, that was probably a big fail, I was pretty much going on my knowledge from modding games.

What's the kick like on a Mosin? Does it leave a mark on your shoulder? :p

I believe that 7.62x54r does have a larger (longer) slug than 7.62x39.
I'm not really sure what the green tip on that 5.56 means, and I think the bullet next to it might be .50GI.

The mosin kicks hard, really hard, especially if you don't hold it right. I usually feel sore for about a day after, depending on how many rounds I shoot at one time.

What are your thoughts on the Ruger Mini-14? I'm considering buying one of those later on.
I really like them, but before you buy one, take into account that you can also get them in 7.62x39 as well as 5.56x45 (.223), as you may like one round much more than the other (plus price differences).

What's the "right" way to hold it? On the bony part of your shoulder, or in the crook between your shoulder and collarbone?

I usually hold it tight to my shoulder. The muscle under the collar bone gets sore too quickly.

You could get a recoil pad, but I think it clashes with the look of the gun.
