So if you're Jewish what's a 7 percent tip on a 200 dollar meal and is that a fair tip?

I've got two:

1: Is there any tension between Jews who see Judaism as a cultural thing and don't believe in a personal God, and those that believe in the theology?

2: What's your opinion on Israel, and their relationships with their neighbors?

Wow, there needs to be some serious banhammering on this thread.

As for finding someone through a matchmaker, consider this - the more confining your criteria, the easier it is to google search it and come up with the result you want. This isn't strictly limited to Judaism, it just fits well within the Orthodox community.

Circumcision served multiple purposes in Jewish history. One was to show subservience to God (Yahweh). Then again, so does baptism to a Catholic. The only difference is the permanence. It also served a sand-people purpose in reducing potential for sand getting in bad places and rubbing. This is something found less commonly in non-nomadic tribes (settled) tribes, so circumcision was (supposedly) good for health. And last, it was used commonly to differentiate the Jewish people from others at the time. Specifically, the other Egyptian/middle eastern tribes, who did not follow the same practice. This way, there was undeniable proof of religion, even without having other identification. Spies need not apply.

The observed Jewish stance on the new testament is that, while Jesus was a very well constructed robot, he was not the messiahbot. The stories therein are excellent to adhere to, but the actual rules of Judaism are listed primarily (though not limited to) the old testiment of Deuteronomy - the covenant between god and the children of Isreal.

---

Please refrain from specifically insighting violent thoughts/discussion with talk of middle eastern conflict, as they are largely personal and not representative of the religion or ethnicity as a whole. It would be much like asking 'so, do all Christians hate gays?'. If you were to ask do the Jewish people want to have the 'holy land' back? Yes. If you were to ask if the old testament said to conquer the land, crushing the skulls of those who oppose and whetting your heels with the blood of those who would not convert? Yes. Does that apply now, to a society no longer built on 'Kill or Be Killed'? No.
Suffice to say, the Isreali state wishes for recognition and appropriate political and religion rights equal to all countries. Beyond that is an expansionist agenda that some choose to value more highly than others.

Which day is actually your Sabbath day? Is it Friday or Saturday?

What is a Jewish stance on the New Testament?
shabbat, as we call it, starts friday night and last through saturday til nightfall, cause we like to start holidays at sundown. as for that last one, my tanach class consisted mostly of ethical deliberation and life falling into chaos, although, to quote Lewis Black, why is yours the new book and ours the "old" one?

Can Jews really only find partners through a "matchmaker"? That seems terribly... restricting.

Edit: Also, what's the deal with circumcision? Is it meant to represent your submission to God?
yeah, I'm pretty sure the only people who actual do that kinda stuff are the ultra-orthodox and even they have moved on. that kinda stuff only happened in the time where most people married to make themselves richer by having their kids marry. Circumcision... I couldn't tell ya. cue "tradition" from fiddler on the roof

Are you a Zionist and do you approve of what Israel is doing in Gaza and the West Bank?

Also, do you practise Judaism or are you ethnically Jewish, or both?
I would say that yeah, I'm zionist in the fact that I think that the Jewish people need a place to call their own in this big scary world. But I do think that Israel has devolved terribly into hypocracy. As for Gaza and the West bank, the reason they're in the position they're in is cause the government thought that it would be a good idea to use them as bargaining chips, which yeah is kind of a dark way to think of a place with people in it, but Egypt and Jordan didn't want to negotiate, so the two areas are still sorta stuck in limbo to this day. people got out of Gaza, but I do think it's unfair that there are hassids are trying to expand by just setting up camp in the middle in territory that shouldn't be israel's domain.
as for that last question. I'd say I'm both, more the latter than the former, because we all have little rituals that remind us of our cultural identity, and practicing religious judaism is one of them

To put something to rest;

To massively nutshell the entire 'Jews killed Jesus' thing.
Jesus was a Jew. He was sold out by his friends. He was also sold out by the Jewish high figures of the faith, as they saw it a threat to be talking about a messiah. They convinced the roman authority that His insistance on calling Himself 'the king of kings' was a threat to the roman council. A combination of the two factors killed Jesus.

No one party was solely responsible.

That aside, GET OVER IT. Jesus died, according to Christianity, BECAUSE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO! He was told He would die, AND THEN HE DID. Regardless of who caused it, if you believe at all in your own religion, take the time to read it and understand why it occured. It was like, Jesus was supposed to build the Superdome and then got ganked, oops. No, He was scheduled to be ganked. SO GET OVER IT.

say, what's the difference between a jew and a pizza: you don't pull the gold teeth out of a pizza before you put it in the oven

I don't have a problem with religious jews, but the fact that some of the don't consider me a jew, because I'm not jewish is an issue
as for the second question look up a little and you'll get all the answer you'll need

Sadat accepted resolution 242 almost as soon as he assumed presidency, and made it obvious to the USA that he was more than willing to cooperate for peace. Jordan has never been particularly zealous about "Destroying the Zionist Entity", and has repeatedly wavered in the face of Israeli aggression. So much so, King Hussein forcibly evicted the PLO from Jordan in 1970.

Both Egypt and Jordan "turned their back" on the Palestinian problem, and were more than willing to come to peace terms with Israel after the 6-Day war. Golda Mier and Moshe Dayan outright ignored their overtures.

As for your second answer, thats interesting. I know a few people that wouldn't consider the Jewish people an ethnicity.

Its not, and you shouldn't, I'll assume you're German. Yeah so that wasn't you that was a bunch of dead guys from the same country as you.
Unless you are time traveling Hitler, then it is your fault.

I think there needs to be a distinction between Jews as defined by culture, and Jews as defined by religion, when you ask your questions.

fair enough. I personally have forgiven you guys, the nazis could have been from any country, the stuff they came up with didn't come out of nowhere, but there are definitely holocaust survivors and their families who haven't, so I guess you'll just have to live with guilt for a few more generations

I'm not Jewish and I felt immediately compelled to answer your question. 18% ($36, in this case) is seen as about standard. I generally tip 20% or more for really good service, though. Of course, I don't eat $200 meals.

OT: What differentiates High Holy Days from other holidays in the Jewish tradition and what are the High Holy Days?

Erm.. there is technically a Jewish ethnicity. Just the same as there are more (politically charged zomg) 'true' ethnic roots. Unfortunately, most of that ethnicity was wiped through.. well, countless holocausts, not *just* the German holocaust. Yeah, Christians, I'm looking at you. Crusades weren't just against Tutons and black folk.

oh god, not the "what is a jew" debacle. I can deal with people asking me if we still have arranged marriages, but I'm in no mood to go into existential mess that is the "what is a jew" debate
