How do you define "Native American"? How far back do you go? My family has lived in the U.S. for 5 generations before one of my relatives were born in another country, So do I count?

I've got fairly strong Sioux and Cherokee ancestry, even though the intervening generations have totally wiped away the physical characteristics except green eyes and high cheekbones. What I'm interested in is how you guys feel about Columbus.
If I could have a penny for every time I've heard that one... (not calling you a lair, just hear it very often during tourist season)

I'm a third Cherokee (like everyone else and their mum) and live on the Cherokee Reservation (don't ever come here) of the good ole' mountains of Western North Carolina. I've heard waaay too many tourist talking about their "Great Great Great Great Great Cherokee Princess Grandmother" and how they are this and that much of whatever Indian. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is one of the very few tribes that allow a 1/16 blood degree and I hate it.
I can see that that would get old.
Most people are probably telling the truth though, especially if their family has been in America for long period of time.

What do you think of white people who say that they're part Native american, When they're like 1%. I don't know exactly how common this is in other places, but I hear it alot.
It used to annoy me a lot more but I see it's just a unique culture that a lot of people want to be a part of and... well it's true, I mean that's how our numbers have dropped so much isn't it? Generation after generation of mixing with other races to the point that we're more or less gone.

Okay, seriously though, how was it like living on a rez? How does it 'work' to live there actually?
The first one. I guess you like dark skin, silky hair, high cheek bones and big noses? I got excited than I saw you are about 10 years too young. Maybe I should give you my younger brother's number?

Hmm it's a lot like living in a small town except the buildings are further apart, most houses don't have indoor toilets or electricity is limited. The schools are still using a wood burning stove for heat. The textbooks are ancient. So pretty much it's like growing up slightly Amish. Except more people are alcoholics.

If your family WALKED over to America from an iceberg from Eurasia in about 50,000 BC. Then you get to be a native American.

Are you worried that your culture will disappear and be forgotten?
Very few Natives are not some form of Christian I'd say many of our ways are lost. But we still tell the stories and identify our culture.

Sometimes, sometimes I worry about losing my red nation identity myself. Than I feel guilty about not trying hard enough. My friends tell me this is what it's like to be catholic.

Does it annoy you when a clearly white person who clearly is disconnected from the Native American culture is all "Well, I'm part Choctaw and Navajo and blah blah blah blah?"

Sometimes I just feel like they say it to be cool.

I only ask because I'm 1/16 Cherokee (not very much, I know) but I never mention having a Native American heritage because 1. I look VERY white and don't think I'd be believed 2. I know nothing about my (insert the proper number of greats) grandmother or where she came from... only that she was Cherokee. I don't think it's proper for me to run around shouting about my Native background, because I feel it's disrespectful when I know nothing of the culture or even my family.... or really have a native background to begin with.

On a side note, when I was 16 I got to spend about 2 weeks surrounded by the Navajo culture and I really liked the experience/ gained a lot of respect for Native Americans. So, yeah. I highly recommend whities such as myself stay on a reservation for 2 weeks to see what life is like.

Wow, thank you for an open oppertunity for understanding and questions.

I live in Tucson AZ USA. We have two tribes here with four casinos total. I once used the Native American to describe them inside. I was told no, they are "Indian Casinos." I found this curious because my whole life the NA was told to be correct and the John Wayne "Indian" is offensive (all white folk telling me it is offensive btw). So I asked why, and never got a straight answer from the NAs employed there leaving me to speculate. I guessed it was because their customer's are older, generally white and don't want to risk offending them by correcting their use of Indian to a more modern (PC) term out of fear of losing money. Would you say my speculation is reasonable. Is there a cultural reason you know of that the casinos are accepted and demanded to be called Indian.

I understand your dislike of the word "savage" being associatied with NA mascots. But for me I like the term warrior. Indeed my ethnic background is Irish and I like the term "fighting" Irish. Perhaps I like it because I am a big pussy and I buy guns to compensate for penis size. Keep in mind Klingons are a warrior race and how many nerds wasted their time to learn that absolutely bogus language intead of Spanish, German, or even their native language of English ( I are spoken Enlish good). The nerds did it because they think Klingons are badass. "Badass" is what made the phrase "Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a *****?" funny on Chapell Show. People like badass. It's why middle aged men shave their head, buy a Harley, get a tatoo, and cheat on their wife of 14 years. And they are dentists, hard core thug dentists. You are a bouncer, that's real badass. If I wasn't a pussy, I would be a bouncer and strut around calling myself a warrior. Then again between the two of us, I may be the only to to have actually killed a man...In Reno, just to watch him die.

I am American. I am native as in born in America. My ethnic background is European. I don't like the term caucassion. I can't find it anywhere on a map. So white is fine with me. Whitebread, milk, mayonase, can't dance white.

You're probably right on the first thing. This state sucks because Indian/Native Casinos are not allowed.

I want to see your little brother's picture!

Hmm, I guess living on a reservation is a little more Amish than I excepted... Although sometimes I wish my school used a wood burning stove for heat cos it's always freezing in the classrooms. (I'd like to think the classrooms weren't too cold in your school? One can always dream...)

might have been asked but whatever, do you get annoyed at thanksgiving?
I'm a good sport and understand the spirit of the Holiday enough to ignore it's history.

How does the Raven figure into your people's beliefs? - if at all.
I don't recall anything about Raven in the stories. I don't know anyone who doesn't think of them as a 'spiritual' thing. But I don't know anyone who would call the stories their 'religion' we're mostly christian or atheist now. Even so my tribe's stories were more into Coyote. Coyote is a big deal for plains and desert natives. He's kind of like Loki. Raven is more for alaskan/canadian tribes.
There are often stories of a giant with two faces and one head he is called Na?ng?ba Sw'enu (i'm not sure how to transcribe certain sounds so i used apostrophes to help prononciation) which roughly translates to "Two Man". I just awlays found the idea of two faces on one head neat.

I don't know if I posted this in the right area But, I want to know what it means for a Indian to have 1 feather pointed down. Is it male or female. Someone told me that this Indian is always around me.

I'm not white, I'm European-American.

If black people can do that, so can I.
