If you haven't heard of EVE Online, you're probably blind, given how it is advertised on this site. You may have tried it, but been intimidated by the notorious difficulty curve. So you never really got to experience the game.

Well, this is your chance to find out about the spacefaring MMO you've heard so little about.

The only question I have is: Why does everyone who plays the game assume if you have tried it and didn't like it it's because of intimidation from some factor of the game? Also are Eve players really as elite-ist as the loudest members of the group come off as?

(I'm not saying this attitude is coming from you specifically, but I enjoy lurking on the EVE formus as the soap opera style blow ups are my favorite part of the game and I can see those without paying)

Although I love spacey things, I don't care for paying for things I already bought.
And yes,

Actually that assumption is made because most people who enjoy playing eve first tried it and had a few complaints.

The fact the game plays like an RTS where you control a single unit is kinda strange and the leveling mechanism is almost completely unheard of and seems arbitrary.

Also the only way to really get into the game is to become a bit like a fan boy and Participate in the player organized level of the game (since the story-line is not worth much).

Most of us are not like that in game (though woe be to those who ask simple questions covered in the tutorial), but allot of us tend to come off like that and I am not 100% sure why.

My only plausible reason is the fact the game is so much like what chess would be like if it had guns and space ships and was not horribly boring, that we spend allot of time thinking which makes us assume no one else spends anytime thinking.

I have found that most people who play the game purely to enjoy it are not found on the forums at CCP very often.

Well your not paying for what you earn your paying for a spot on their server.

By your logic all MMO's short of GuildWars are trash.

Also then why do you pay for internet access since you already own the computer :p

It's a fair accusation. EvE players are an embittered lot, generally speaking. Most of us have great senses of humour (you have to when you can lose weeks worth of play due to a lag spike), but generally speaking there's a similar contempt for other MMO players as you would find on a typical MMO's pvp servers towards the pve players, only to the power of intellectual arrogance. I mean it isn't everyone, and most people who have it is only faint, but it is there.

i tried it and really liked it actually, but it wouldn't run very well on my computer, so i had to go without. If i have to ask any questions i guess it would be how long did it take to get past that thoroughly ridiculous learning curve.

I played a little bit of EVE and was impressed by its depth and scope. It really does feel like an alternate reality as much as a game. However the above difficulty curve is pretty accurate; if you're the kind of gamer that gets a thrill out of risks and real consequence for failure you'll probably like EVE. If you're like me and would rather not be punished severely for failure in your off hours then stay the hell away.

First of all, regarding the elitist attitude:

It's a combination of nonconsensual pvp and the difficulty curve. The former makes us the most hardcore MMO out there. The latter keeps wimps out. We oppose any "dumbing down" of the game to attract more players. EVE has a lot of "sacred cows" - key features that we view as integral to the game. Nonconsensual pvp is one. Another is the nonsharded universe. The removal of any of these features would be, in our opinion, comparable to SWG making Jedi a starting class - and would probably have similar consequences for the game (ie total collapse).

And yes, many reviews are simply out of date due to the expansions and added content. These expansions are free, and come fairly often (seven expansions, the eighth comes on June 10th!).

I've played eve for about two months then had to stop due to those nasty things called classes... but as long as you go through the tutorial people in game are very helpful... I was in a small corp (basically guild with a lot more details) and we had a few guys who had been playing years with mostly new players from the whole steam free trial thing. Everyone helped everyone else and ships and isk were all shared without thought because some people needed specific things so to make the group better (which is way more important than in other mmo's) no one cared if they had to donate a ship or some cash.

The elites I knew in game died a lot.... and dying is very expensive.

Not as long as you'd think, first looking at it. There's a lot of basics to grasp, but they are only basics. Find a small corp, that was my way in. Got adopted by a small, utterly hopeless pirate clan, and have stuck with them since. Bloody brilliant.

I do have a question, I played this game and truly loved it, until the beginner chain quest was done, All the mission people just make me deliver stuff to some station over and over and over, so with that, where do the chain or like fun quest come into play, like is it depending on ship or somthing? Could you tell me where to get fun or chain quest because delivering the same old item to the same old station gets to boring.

Yes that was a review of the original Eve Online back in 2003, since then there have been 7 expansions, with an eighth a matter of days away. As a player of eve, there have been many changes since 2003, so much so that its not even comparable to what it is now. My advice is to look up a review of either Trinity (mmorpg.com has one) or wait till a review of Empyrean Age comes out.
Also with Eve, all the expansions are free. Definitely makes it one of the best online games out there.
I wasn't laughing because of the bad(ish) score i was making an immature joke on 69.

Red Alliance are still around. As far as I know, the RedSwarm Federation has not broken up. They failed to defeat BoB, if you're wondering. Goonswarm is now the largest alliance in the game, and a possible rival, known as BRUCE, just collapsed.

Will you please draw a picture in MS Paint that perfectly sums up the EVE experience?
