I agree with you. A lot of men will condescend on women in the online world. But take comfort in the fact that most of those men wouldn't even open their mouth if you were standing in front of them.

And personally, I find hardcore gamer chicks to be very attractive (in a non physical way). To me my perfect girlfriend is one who can beat me at Quake III Arena. :p
My perfect girlfriend could beat me in a fight!

Still my standards are low as I am quite puny.

Okay well let's put things into perspective.

A good portion of HARD CORE gamers are social rejects and nerds. I mean face it, one way or another gaming is a form of escapism, and someone who does it ALL THE TIME is by definition not dealing with reality or trying to get away from it. There are only so many hours in the day.

The thing is that if you see a girl on the internet enough to really be noticible as a gamer on that kind of level, chances are she is going to be the female version of the typical game geek, and one of those fat, depressed women with all the acne who sits around reading paranormal romance novels.

Like everything there are exceptions, but this is about probabilities. The odds of someone who is playing WoW 40 hours or more a week (the equivilent of a full time job) or on the internet surfing game forums non-stop, being an attractive, well adjusted, member of society are slim. This is why most nerds call "BS" on other nerds and claims of being exceptional, or even normal, both from guys and girls. Chances are if your spending as much time immersed in gaming as the guy calling you, your no better off than he/she is.

Now of course there is one of the biggest exceptions which is a problem of a sort. Kids also have a lot of time to be on the internet and playing game. You do find a lot of young girls who feel the internet is a safe place to "experiment" sexually and as a result you might meet a cute girl, though in many cases she's going to literally be a girl, and not really thinking this stuff through. People who talk about internet stalkers do not realize that a lot of times these "poor defenseless victims' initiate this stuff. So of course you have to be careful, since you can't nessicatly tell the age of who your dealing with, even with voice and pics. Also I'll be perfectly blunt in saying that a lot of "child porn" is produced by young girls themselves either for extra money, or for kicks, and you can't always tell the age of the person involved (though in many cases you can), so even exchanging pictures with people you meet on the internet can be... a problem.

Then of course there is the issue of whether or not these various celebrities you see at things like "The Videogame Awards" (hot babes and otherwise) actually play games, or merely promote them. Truth be told I can actually envision some of those models, actors, and sports types playing fairly hard core simply due to the amount ot time they spend travelling abroad on planes, buses, or whatever else. At the end of the day celebrities are just people to.

However it is human nature to be skeptical, especially seeing as one expects a celebrity to conceal their identity. Thus most are wisely going to take any claims of fame and fortune with a grain of salt, and frankly the odds of ever running into one of these people (by the numbers) is minimal.

In general, while some might find it insulting, I'm enough of a realist where I tend to think that the overwhelming majority of people who could be considered "gamers" as opposed to those who simply play games, are social misfits, and it is going to show in their physical prescence or "Meatspace Avatar" as some put it (haha).

But then understand that in saying this I'm disabled, and not really talking down to anyone. I can't really sit down and say "hey I'm one of lifes gifted winners, so none of this applies to me". I'm very sub-normal, as much as I wish otherwise.

But seriously, there are a lot of girl gamers (I hate the term 'female'... reminds me of when I was active duty army) out there. A LOT more than one would think. Most of them are a little more casual than guys.

I just hate the stereotype that girls know NOTHING about video games. I ran into that problem all the time when I worked at Gamestop. I used to have customers purposely AVOID me because of my gender and the predisposition that I knew nothing of what I was selling. It got really old really fast. *shakes fist*

The problem is, if you're like me, you're wondering "Can I find a woman who will satisfy my desire to play left 4 dead until the Yule logs burn low, snow blocks the exits to your home, and you're forced to call work to say you're not going to be in until the spring thaw?
I hate to categorize people, but since it is you who has created the category, I can with conviction say most of the girls I know would, and most of those would join me in doing so. However, this is because I tend to meet girls who have at least some interest in video gaming or any other variant of gaming (cards, role-playing, etc.). And this, my friends, this is because I go to conventions. Now, I know what you are all (or more realistically, only a few of you) thinking: those events are just packed with smelly, greasy teenagers and nerds. Well, here in Sweden, they are NOT. I repeat; NOT. As a matter of fact, the girls (and guys) who gather and participate in these events are those of social skills and courage, which allows them to do so. (those who do not have it quickly learn. saved a lot of lives, it has.)

Perhaps this is because most of the conventions held here are not overly huge, and perhaps it is more because they attract a wide variety of people with many different interests. See, conventions are normally centred around a LOT of things, such as Japanese popular (or more historical) culture (most common) with the VAST variety of activities it offers, music, gaming, all kinds of other social, mental and physical games to play and sometimes even martial arts and philosophy, and I do not know a single association that profits from any of it, though I do know of some that has donated to various causes in the world. The absolute core of them all is to socialize however, and anything we do besides that are just means of getting an excuse to do so. To facilitate it.

Post Scriptum: I can also add that to most conventions more girls attend than guys. I would say it is because girls are more social, at least in this group of people with these interests. So sayeth my vast experience. (no, really. it IS vast. amen.)
Also, I have always had a lot of girls as friends. I think I have been lucky to find so many that are reasonable and intelligent, whereas I must have been unlucky in that aspect when it comes to guys. Figures. Probably has a lot to do with where I have lived. In any case, girls are a lot more reasonable, and, most of all, understanding and compassionate. That goes double for all the geeky and/or nerdy ones I know.
I love you so much, you amazing, wonderful idols of love.

With fluffy bunnies on top.

...

Ok, now I killed the seriousness. I hope no one thinks I am not serious because of this. 'Cause I am. I am actually a bit angry. Oh well, peace out.

This babbling was brought to you by sleep-deprivation.
Insomnia: for when you really need to degenerate someone!

Still very serious though.

Hah, reminds me as well of my time in the army (which was very, very recent).
Huh, that's really weird. All girl clerks in all the video game stores I've been in have people flocking around them. Might partially be because those that are hired are very beautiful and attractive young women, but they've also displayed knowledge of video games that surpass most. Man, is there anything sweeter...

I'm always really perplexed about the "no girls in my tree house" mentality of many gamers, it's truly bizzar.

I think the worse thing about this is that it undermines the notion that gamers are for the most part normal people with slightly different hobbies. If you claim that there are virtually no attractive women in gaming you might as well tattoo a giant red L on your forehead.
