I've never been a big fan of the Assassins Creed series. I enjoyed the first quite a bit, the second one didn't hook me and, because of that, neither need the sequels. I played a bit of 2 and Brotherhood and watched my brother play Revelations, so I thought I would have a crack at Assassins Creed 3. And, my god, I love it. It still has some of the same problems as the others; not all that much freedom in the missions, Desmond sucks and the future/Desmond story from the other games is still weak but I can't help but love it. The gameplay feels slightly simpler but at the same time more refined, the hunting is a lot of fun, and there's a ton of side quests and collectibles. I like what they did with the story, making the Templar's more human and less evil for the sake of being evil, opening the game playing as Haytham and I'm a big fan of the time period used in this game.

There are a few problems. At times I felt the British are shown as the 'baddies' with the main game being a bit against the Brits and the only balanced arguments coming from Shaun's Animus database entries . Although, maybe this is because I'm British.
Connor also isn't as instantly likable as Ezio either, but in time I grew to like him and would welcome the next game starring him.

Feel free to add your own reasons you like/hate the game, but if you're writing a problem you have with the game, specify if this is a problem exclusively with Assassins Creed 3 or a problem present with all of them. I'm also interested in what you guys think was improved in Assassins Creed 3 and what was made worse.

I'll end this small wall of text with saying that I think Assassins Creed 3 is the best of the Assassins Creed games and give you a final reason why: Haytham Kenway.

There's lots to do, on paper the story and mechanics should be interesting, and it's a massive open world. But in practice, it's just so boring to play, and at times frustrating. I can't even pin it down on anything, which makes it even more annoying, as the other games were fairly addictive to play.

Really?

I think it's the most boring game I've played of 2012.

I completed every single other console AC in the same week I got it. I haven't touched AC in weeks, it's just mediocre.

I've heard a lot of people say this, but each to there own I guess. The first 6 or so hours are definitely too slow, but the game picks up afterwards. I think I like it so much because of the time period, which interests me anyway and the writings great. It also reminds me slightly of Red Dead Redemption, which I loved. Have you tried the Naval Missions by the way? There pretty cool as well :)

If by "best" you mean "awful boring piece of shit that needed a few more months of development" then I agree.

Don't get me wrong, its not my game of the year, but I was just pleasantly surprised by the story, game play and depth the game had. But I do completely understand some of the hate though and can see how you think it was boring, but I don't see how many of the problems people have could have been fixed with more development time.

It's better than Revelations,, and the ship missions were hands down some of the best fun I've had in a long time, but otherwise... meh.

I just think the vision that the Dev team have for the series appears to be hell bent on moving further and further away from what I loved about the first 2 games (Brotherhood was still very good overall, but that was the game when I think the rot started).

AC1 was pretty much the definition of a 'rough diamond'. It had some monumentally stupid design decisions and was repetitive as all fuck, but at least it knew what it wanted to be, and what it wanted you to be. All the stuff on the side, all the intel gathering and making of allegences served the main purpose of the game (i.e. Being a Goddamn Assassin). While AC2 did add a lot of stuff, there was still virtually nothing that was just busywork for the sake of busywork. Not to mention, both Ezio and Altair had clear and consistent motivations as protagonists. Fast forward to AC3, and it seems like the Assassin's order doesn't have a fecking clue what it serves anymore, and the game wants me to be literally anything else other than an Assassin.

Most of the stuff I hated about it probably could.
They could fix the easy as shit combat.
They could fix the broken chase sequences.
They could fix the immensely boring minigames.
They could set out the cities in a way that's actually fun to do parkour in.
Speaking of which, they could go back to the old system of "run" and "sprint" being two separate actions.
They could find some voice actors for the protagonists who are willing to give a damn.
They could fix the broken, awful framerate and cutscene glitches (PS3)
They might have even been able to fix the pacing in the dull as shit story. Maybe also stop with the whole "finished all tutorials 6 hours into the game."

Ah OP, you had the very poor judgement to not have the same opinion as the rest of the Escapist community I say sarcastically.

I like the combat and most of the mini-games, the parkour and tree-running I found to be great fun. I especially thought the voice actors were great. Connor and his mother seem to sound slightly dis-interested 20% of the time but the rest are great. At least they didn't take the Skyrim way of only having about 7 voice actors for all of the minor characters. Maybe some of the problems and glitches are worse on the PS3? It wouldn't be the first time.
I do agree that the chase missions are broken sometimes, and have you tried the missions where you have to plant incriminating evidence on a snitch? They're so broken!

Here, I have put the problem in bold for you. A great game needs to hook you up at the beginning, not six hours in. Common examples: Bioshock, Modern Warfare. During those six hours, you could have watched three much more enjoyable movies. I am not saying that the beginning needs to be action-packed either; the opening to Half-Life is pretty slow too, and yet it does great at keeping you interested.

Although I do admit that Haytham Kenway is very cool.

I agree that this is a problem with the game, but I was hooked by it unlike a lot of people. Maybe its because I saw my brother play the later levels so I knew the game would eventually pick up, or maybe its because I was so attracted to the god of a man that is Haytham Kenway. Either way, the pace and story of the game does eventually get better.

Assassin's Creed 3 is fucking awful.

1) The setting creates piss-poor freerunning as most buildings are no higher than your average house.
2) You start the game as the only interesting character then play the rest of it as the LEAST interesting one.
3) You're an "Assassin" who has his own ship and engages in Naval Warfare. Very stealthy...
4) Pretty much every assassination amounts to "run up to them with an axe" as opposed to the quick & quiet nature of 1 and 2.
5) The game doesn't even have a fucking ending.

Number 5 is what annoyed me the most. I've bought every single Assassin's Creed game to find out what happens between the Templars and the Assassins. It was an interesting power struggle of conflicting ideologies. What do we get instead?

Desmond releases a deity. World is saved. Tada!

Assassin's Creed 3 is just bad. I say this with a certain degree of objectivity, it is very, very boring.

If you judge assassins creed 3 as an open world action game, it's pretty good, the combat is pretty good and the city and forest look nice. But if you want a free running stealth game you will probably hate it. The parkour is terrible in the city and whenever you go on a roof enemies with telescopes for eyes see you from a mile away. Stealth is like that too, I don't expect enemies to be completely useless but this is extreme overcompensation. The naval missions are great and the graphics are pretty good too, but the game just bored me to tears.

Because god forbid discussing games honestly on a website about game discussion.

Pardon me, but I don't really see how using a variety of swear words to describe a game is productive game discussion.

He (assuming) asked for opinions, I gave them.
Want elaboration? Look above your original post.

And the way you're phrasing your OP you're making it seem like people who dislike AC3 are crucifying the dude for liking it. Most of us aren't, he can like whatever he wants, we just think it's bad and felt like sharing that.

Oh, it's too late...

OT: I don't think it ousted II as my favorite in the series, but yeah, I liked it, especially once Haytham and Connor met up in-game. I liked the environments and free-running through the trees, I loved the naval combat, and it was certainly more interesting to me than Brotherhood or Revelations.

But somehow they managed to make the movement better while making the control scheme worse. I don't even know how that's possible. The combat was more brutal, but they removed the ability to easily do double-stealth assassinations. At least they removed city renovation...

The ending was terrible though. Completely out-of-character and lazy.
