Like all the rest of you I saw the Assassins Creed III release trailer and the promo pictures. I don't doubt the game will be awesome and have an interesting take on arguably some of the most famous events in history.
But if you compare its trailer with the other Assassins Creed games it seems a bit lack luster. If you look at all the trailers, they all subtly showcase game play features.
One, showed the social stealth, the free running and the assassinations.
Two, showed the gun, the disarming capabilities and the ability to hire help.
Brotherhood introduced having apprentices.
Revelations show cased Altair coming back.
Three does this as well, it showed the dual wielding the... tomahawk (correct me if that isn't the name of the type of axe he uses) and a dagger, the free running through the trees and fighting men with muskets.
So it's fine on that aspect but it falls down in two key aspects.
First the music, all the others either had intense music to emphasise the seriousness of the situation or had intially cheerful music to disguise what was going to happen later. (Musical social stealth)
The second is the most important, conflict. All the others the assassin is trying to accomplish something in the trailer, typically an assassination. This allows the trailer to have an antagonist as well as the assassins. Even if the character in the trailer is later dropped, changed, or a major antagonist, in the trailer there is a clear objective in view. Revelations didn't quite have the objective part, its more Ezio gets ambushed, but still has the antagonist and added to the tension by Ezio getting captured and about to be hung.
In three you see the assassin killing a bunch of unnamed red coats and then moves to a battle taking place elsewhere. So it begs the question how is what the assassin was doing significant?
All they would have needed to do was have him try and get the enemy general or something and the signifcance would be there. Instead he kills half a dozen men that he could have probably avoided, why bother killing them.
Your thoughts?
P.S. Like I said, I don't doubt the game will be good and I enjoy seeing what they do with the time period. I just thought the trailer which is normally what people ogle over for half a year could have been better.
