Is anyone else influenced by the fact that the lead designer for the game was a woman? Last time that happened I can remember is Portal...and everyone remembers the words "I'm SERIOUS. I can't find any criticism for it."
Hehe. Jade Raymond is not the lead designer, Patrice Desilet is. Jade Raymond is the producer and the cynical (and wildly successful) attempt at getting the prospective buyer to pay attention to the developer diaries. You'll notice that her hair is brown in the English interviews and black in the French-Canadian ones in a pretty obvious attempt to appeal to the different demographics.

This has nothing to do with the game quality, though. ;)
Ahhh, Jade Raymond. The reason I haven't been keeping up with Creed news even though I'm excited as hell for it. It insults me and makes me feel a bit sleezy whenever she's given more attention than a standard games producer would (ie, none).
what about hideo kojima? he gets alot of attention.

So i got the game yesterday, ive got three or four hours of game play in so far. it is pretty smooth with a few minor things that are iritating... like combat is fun when your character lissens to you.. ive had it times where push to go in to combat.. and he kinda pulls his sword out and plays the "how many people can skewer me befor i plan to use it" game. the free moving is ok i guess.. but he is too liberal to take a jump to his death when your trying to manuver around an obstical and climb higher.. and when you try to jump from one obstical to another half the time is spent trying to make him not go head over heals down. using a horse must intoxicate him becuase ridding that is fast.. but kinda like driving a car with your eyes closed.. kinda using the force if ya will.. but once you get the handle on fighting its pretty easy.. gona play and play and play til i've beaten in.. then post again haha..

This is one of the few games that has made me think about getting a 360. It has all the potential to be so good, and it looks amazing...but then so did MOO3...

I am definitely pleased with my purchase of this game last night, mostly because I walked in to Toys R Us and picked it up off the shelf, no pre-orders and plenty of copies to go around....now if Gamestop were only capable of this kind of phenomenon.

I ended up playing for nearly 5 hours last night and I am definitely hooked. I enjoy/despise collecting things so I am also in heaven/hell. I am just now hitting the more Sandbox style part of the game and have been pretty shocked at how big this game world really is.

The combat is good and it reminds me of how in Thief you are capable of doing damage attacking, but are far better off using stealth and sneak attacks versus trying to be a war machine. The whole point of the game is to abide by the Assassin's Creed, so if you are looking for a straight action game, don't be angry when this game is not Ninja Gaiden. It does feature stealth, but it is definitely more in line with the Hitman games than Splinter Cell.

This is mostly a repost of something I sent to a few friends, but I did pick up and play the game yesterday.

If only for the visuals, everyone with a HDTV and an Xbox360 should at least rent or borrow it - it's just amazing to watch. Even if the whole damn game is desaturated shades of brown, again.

The gameplay seems to repeat in the following manner:

[ol]
[li]Get your target assignment.[/li]
[li]Travel to target city.[/li]
[li]Climb towers to look around the city.[/li]
[li]Eavesdrop, pickpocket, or interrogate to learn information about your target. You have to do X number out of the maximum to continue to the actual assassination.[/li]
[li]Go to assassination target. Watch cutscene.[/li]
[li]Follow/kill target.[/li]
[li]Run away.[/li]
[/ol]

The closest comparison to another game I can think of would be a medieval Crackdown.

The first assassination wasn't very difficult. I think it took me 2-3 hours to play through, including the lengthy tutorial chapter. For the most part, it didn't seem that there was any puzzle elements, other than using a group of scholars to sneak through the checkpoint into the city, which was a direction of the ingame help system anyway. Hopefully tracking and finding the later targets involves more.

Climbing and running around the rooftops is great. There's no jump button, you just hold down the buttons to put yourself into 'sprint mode' and you'll jump whenever it's appropriate. It sounds stupid, but it actually works well, and lets you focus on navigating. Climbing works the same way, you just hold the button and direct yourself to appropriate hand/footholds.

Combat was confusing for me at first - they don't do a great job explaining it, and you're not very good at it during the first assassination (you learn more moves and get upgrades as you get 'promoted'). You have to hit the attack button as your sword connects to chain combo attacks, and if you keep on the pattern you'll trigger a deathblow (which are awesome). The annoying part was that the help system kept telling me to do counter attacks when the character didn't know how to do them yet, which was very unhelpful.

My two major complaints would be that first, for a stealth/action sandbox game, the AI is incredibly stupid. You can raise the guards ire, climb onto the roofs, jump to the next one, and duck into a garden. 15 seconds later, nobody remembers you at all. It's the 'wanted level' system from GTA except there's a paint shop every 20 yards. Even if the guards are 'suspicious', holding a button and walking slowly will get them to ignore you. I know you're supposed to be a master of blending in, but I just can't see the guy in the white robes laden with openly displayed weaponry as being that incognito.

My second complaint is that it feels like there should be more to do. The world is so open and detailed, GTA-style, that it feels like there should be stuff to play with all over the place. There isn't. You get to do the pre-placed and one-time-only activities and that's it. Other than that, all that I've seen are a few collectible quests, and I'm not going to climb all over the city looking for 100 hidden flags. I'm probably just spoiled from GTA and it's abundance of 'stuff' - I can't think of other things that the assassin could do myself - but it feels like there should be more. I can't see turning this game on again once the missions are completed. It's a sandbox world, but there's not very many toys (just lots of sand).

I don't think this will be a game that you're going to look back on in a few years and say that it was awesome and one of your favorites ever. It is a good game though, and they took quite a bit of risk in some of the gameplay elements, and I think they paid off. It's definitely worth a rental at least, and I'm not disappointed in the purchase.

Of course, my impressions might change as I get further into the game itself.

I'm only two hours into the game but I am hooked. I unlocked the Kingdom and had to force myself to go to bed.

So far I'm 100% sold on the story, the game looks so good I wish I could trade my tv in for a bigger & better one, I can't wait to start exploring in earnest, and I haven't had any problems with the controls. Considering that the stealth/action/assassintation/sandbox is my favorite genre this game hits all the sweetspots for me.

One thing I am really looking forward to is exploring. In any game I love getting to the point where I can just start wandering around. I like the fact that in "AC" I can say, "huh I wonder if I can climb that...holy shit I can."

There's my first impression two cents. I'll see if my opinion changes in twenty hours.

I picked it up and am on the 3rd assassination, probably the best game all year for me, i just like running from rooftop to rooftop killing oblivious archers and saving those poor peasents. Overall the gameplay is great and the moves and weapons you get a cool but im not liking the story as much its good but i think they should have jsut made you an assassin during the crusades not just some wierd machine time travel 3d vurtual reality thing... of doom.

Truth be told, comming in to the game the whole reliving the past threw your ancesters was a twist in it self... the story line is pretty damn good for what it is... and in a very "saw1" like fassion, at the end smacks you in the face and says wait for two.

the only thing that really bothered me.. was the fact that the main character alty-whatever the hell is name is.. is pants on head retarded... and half the time when your fighting, climbing or running he moves like an eighty year old geriactric (and to qoute yahtzee) with downsyndrum.. a few things i didnt like were the stinkin begging women who seemed to gang up on you.. and then throw rocks when you don't give them anything.. and the drunks.. all of which i would end up playing the SAME bastard ship scene for the 12th time.. becuase they stagger about and for some reason trip in to you and your pants on head retard-ssin falls in to the water and dies.. becuase aparently he is a MASTER assasin.. but missed classes at the local YMCA or something.. now to collect all these flags.. and such.. maybe there will be more..

As far as Jade goes I think that the only reason she gets more attention is because she just happens to have not been beat over the head with an ugly stick. I would think that the producer or director would be put in front of the camera, microphones, etc.

I want to play this game I wish I could rent ten games from gamefly man.

I didn't find the fighting/moving ect. all that bad I'm almost unbeatable with the short blade and i find he climbs the walls and such at a semi realistic speed, the beggers were annoying though. The one thing that urks me is that you have to blend while on a horse making the travel speed all but fast and i ended up just galloping past endless armys of guards who found my wanting to ride a horse quickly (Which is the reason for having a horse is it not?) and me wanting to do this becomes some kind of crime against humanity. All and all the first impressions are good and the moves and such are very fun, i love leaps of faith into conveniently placed bails of hay.

don't get me wrong i woud gladly buy it again in a heart beat.. but there were times i was kinda boggled at how he would start climbinb then find it in himself to sp;ring load off that tower after being instructed to climb a bit more :p or pulling my sword out to fight and the object threw sheer randomality.. just completlu boggles him... Hold what end? Oh yes.. now i remember... urk it's too late im dead. but the fighting, the animations for everything. its all very flawless... though again the ending drives me nuts. i hate ending on that kind of note (trying not to spoil it for anyone is tough) i REALY hope yahtzee plays. wether he enjoys it or not. Now to just kinda go in and in a very grand theft auto like way.. kill anyone i want, collect all the flags.. kill somemore...including the beggers and the stupid drunk people (becuase once you beat it) they don't seem to care if you go around killign citizens.. i must of killed like 30 and NOTHING.. but mid game doing that to 3 and its no no.. bad monkey start over :p

Right, I completed the game a few hours ago after doing everything except collecting flags, killing templars and completing a few Xbox Achievements (which are stupid anyway).

I must say that I really liked the game, I loved the story (which I will not go into since I will try to not spoil anything for anyone) and I think a follow-up has a huge potential. I do not understand how people can claim that the controls were bad, like Robomanjr wrote, it was really easy to fight as well as move. The drunks and beggars were there for a reason, you're supposed to deal with them. Anyhow, I did get annoyed with the fact that the drunks only picked a fight with me, and no one else in the city.

I do not mean to sound harsh, but if you had problems with the controls you should consider practicing on your own skills handling them, I really do not consider that the games fault since as I said, it was really easy to maneuver Altaïr, and this is my first console ever that I bought less than a month ago.

One thing that got annoying after a while was that the investigation game play was a tad too repetitive, after a few assassinations; climbing towers and murdering guards became somewhat dull, the unique and huge streets diminished the feeling of doing the same thing over and over again, though, and since pickpocketing, interrogation and eavesdropping added new story elements they never really got dull, for me at least.

Another thing that annoyed me was the area called "The Kingdom". It was too big and too pointless if you do not care about collecting every flag and every templar. They could have added some quests or perhaps even a target to that area which was pretty well designed.

The AI was a bit too stupid, if you break line of sight and then hide, fine, they lose you. I can buy that even if it was a bit silly some times, but if you then reveal yourself and basically walk forward to pat them on the shoulder before they are gone again, they do not have the slightest problem with that, they sort of have a goldfish memory.

The graphics and animations were impressive, sometimes you found a glitch with objects being partially ethereal but that is to be expected of any game with detailed animations really.

In conclusion this is probably the best game I have played this year, I would recommend it to everyone. It has it's flaws like most games but I have more or less enjoyed the 25 - 30 hours I spent in "The Animus".

haha.. i think i spent like 15 max. although i had the above issues... i put it in and completed it rather quickly :p

Though my bigest trouble spot was at the end when your in that room, i kinda walked around for like 30 minutes trying to figure out what the heck i was supposed to do.. becuase it flashes the scene and then your kinda stuck... with no clues... but i found out and poof the end haha

Lately (and by that I mean the last five or so years) I found myself missing the real stuff that makes games great for me: new, creative innovation.

I loved Homeworld because I've never played an RTS of that sort and never experienced full spheric acceleration.
I loved to Total War series because no other game combined tactics and strategy (few people know the difference between the two).
I loved the original Black and White because of the interface and the creature, neither of which were present in other games.
I totally adored the Monkey Island series because it was funny, simple, and challenging (get through mega-monkey or whatever difficulty that was without a walkthrough and see how long it takes you to finish the game).

However, I will say that the Orange Box lifted my spirits and hope relating to video games. And purely by Yahtzee's recommendation I got myself Psychonauts and enjoyed it, but it wasn't to me what MI was. So I have some rekindled flames still going, but I don't really think Assassin's Creed will be that good. In fact I think the sheer disappointment of having a cool concept presented sloppily will make me despise it, as NWN or B&W2 did to me. To me it looks like a medieval setting of the Hitman series with a 90% probability of a cheesy story. It will probably have a predictable twist in the plot which most players will know halfway through the game. One of the things I can't stand is an abuse of a cliche.

With that, though, I will say that I am leaving a question mark on the game until I play it myself, and that goes to games I'm looking forward to, as well. (Which would be Starcraft 2 and Dragon Age)

Thus far, I've only played an hour myself. My friend played two hours, and I saw him get into Damascus and I tried to backseat game. It kind of sucked.

So far, I love it. I already knew about the sci-fi element from trailers, but I'm so glad they kept the full importance of it a total secret. I'm already drawn into the story. Sucks that I'm at home, meaning there are some real trouble issues given the baby here. I'll still get whatever time I can, though. I also loved the controls, though. I am eager to play more.

However, it seems to me that it really isn't so much a stealth game. It certainly has stealth elements, but it isn't in the same vein as Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell. I also imagine that the game was stupified after several focus tests, though it's still horrible to see just how badly. The "blend" command should not act as it should in all situations. However, I can see the whole "suspicion" thing working if you argue that, in a running or chase situation, the guard is going to be looking on other things that they never get a good enough look at you. Hence being suspicious, and the need to be careful.

Assassin's Creed 2! i can't wait heh.

on a side note, does anyone know if there is a reason to collect flags on the ps version? or kill all the templar? or both?
