I'm a woman who does parkour, and I have to be honest that I'm bothered there wasn't a female option in the 4 player co-op.
I understand the main protagonist being male- it's their story to tell and I'm cool with that. But why can't there be a female in the co-op?
Perhaps I'm overreacting, but I am a bit disappointed. If they can show female npcs being beheaded a-la guillotine, why can't they show one kicking ass?
:(

As far as I've understood it, every player in coop is the same guy, the main character named Arno Dorian. The reason they look (slightly) different is because Unity will feature a bigger customization system than earlier Assassins Creed games, in regards to both looks and skill trees. So, the reason why there's no female is most likely because every coop character is Arno, and not just side characters made specifially for the coop.

Ah. Makes much more sense now :) Thanks.

Why did they make everyone the same guy? That is just a bewildering choice. Why wouldn't they just use the mulltiplayer characters for Co-Op?

Unity won't have any form of competetive multiplayer according to the recent E3 interview, so that's probably why they didn't use multiplayer characters. The reason everyone is Arno I'm guessing is because the coop is storybased, so everyone would get the story cutscenes with their version of Arno being Arno, and everyone else being other characters that probably won't have names.

Oh. Well that explains it I guess. Still disappointing though.

Have you tried that game with the Asian lady with the eye tattoo who runs around in a white city? Or that other Assassins Creed game with the black women in New Orleans?

so in other words in not [i/]quite[/i] as dumb as the Brink fiasco...but still I'd like an Assasins Creed game with a female protagonist that wasn't relegated to a struggling handheld (though they did port it later I'll give them that)

I can't think of a better franchise than Ass Creed to promote different protagonists...its already an established IP and a female assasin is all within lore...

It is kinda frustrating; especially since in games like Smash Bros., the Wii Fit Trainer and Villager can be played as either gender, the Miis can be female, and Hyrule Warriors has the playable females outnumbering the males 3 to 1.

I said this in my post on the subject buT:
One single SIDE game with virtually no presence in the series and certainly no established presence in the plot with a female lead doesn't constitute equal representation. Pointing to a single woman in a room of 50 men and saying "but it's totally fine!" doesn't make for an argument in the least.

Hate to double post, but this just in?Nintendo has announced it?s too hard modeling a second Mario brother. A second character means that you have to redo a lot of animation, a lot of costumes [inaudible]. Instead they?ll just be recoloring Mario green. It?s unfortunate, but it?s a reality of game development

Never said that. Was just recommending them if she hadn't played them yet.

I don't want to play games just because there are women in them. But if there are going to be four characters to play, I just want to know why one can't be representative of someone else. And my question was answered, apparently they're all the same character so everyones story can advance- which I'm totally happy with. If there's a good reason (or even a mediocre one)- it's all cool. Problem solved.

and now I dig this up:

http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/22530/article/assassin-s-creed-unity-adding-female-assassins-would-only-take-a-day-or-two/

So basically at most it would take 48 man hours to do that (if that's what the statement means as opposed to two work days). The more these guys try to squirm their way out of it the more idiotic they look. They got caught, so it's time to just fess up. Though I'm not sure they'll learn their lesson

Ticks me off that they wimped out on the gender select.

Ubisoft is a frustrating company to say the least. 2 versions of Liberation, and Child of light, and females in their multiplayer modes got me all hopeful that they'd represent women more... then this BS arises that costs them sales since I won't buy it, nor will I recommend it.

I'm just not at all interested in playing as a guy who prolly has little imagination in his character. At least a female version would stand out in the sea of D.

Yeah... because a female character that is just female is the type of forward focus the industry needs to make women more prevalent and interested in gaming.

I would take it over the current flood of white, slightly-grizzled men.

Um... who do I trust? The actual developers, or an ex-employee who last worked on what was easily the worst major title in the franchise?
The one that isn't trying to cover it's butt?
