Looking at the comments underneath the trailer of the upcoming game in the Assassin's Creed franchise I've been thinking. We all know that there's a school of thought that the developers are wasting the potential that they have given a game about a descendant of Assassins that can visit any time period that he likes and basing three of their mainstream titles in only two settings- the Middle East and Italy. There's also a school of thought that seems to be getting bored of Ezio, despite the fact he is a far more interesting character out of the three protagonists introduced thus far.
So, it's occurred to me that the reason that people like the Assassin's Creed franchise so much is that potential to be so much more. Don't misunderstand me, Assassin's Creed is an incredible game and one of my favourite series', I even loved the first one despite it's repetition. And I replay them often.
But... remember the first time you saw the first trailer for Assassin's Creed II? For me, the excitement came from the way that the character of Ezio appeared similar to Altair, but that the setting that he was in had altered him in ways. The same elements of the first are there- the white hood, the assassination followed by the badass dealing of the guards and the free-running chase scene- but all had been adapted in a way to make it feel new and exciting.
This is what I feel people are aching to feel again. Ezio is a great character, but really, with Revelations coming out, we could have had two more protagonists in two different settings to really play around with by now. Not to say that I'm not totally psyched by the prospect of playing with Ezio, Altair and Desmond in the Revelations, but just saying... we could have had a Japanese Assassin and a Victorian English Gentleman Assassin alongside the three that we have now, which could have really piqued so much more interest out of the audience rather than playing it safe with a character that everyone is familiar with.

Thoughts?

Agree completely.. but tbh i'll probably keep buying them anyway, stabbing people is unhealthily fun.
Although the plot twists at the end of the game are getting more and more ridiculous.. kinda wish they'd tone it down... i dont mind some conspiracy stories, that was great from the first game but from the second game onwards its been getting stupid

Assassin's creed is one of my favorite series ever. And yes, I was much more excited when I saw the first glimpses of AC2 and it was assassins in a different period and place but the thing is, we know this is the last Ezio game and it looks great so I'm not complaining. I don't think Assassin's Creed is going anywhere, and I think that there will be plenty more chances for Ubisoft to expand on the franchise as a whole. I like the look of moving to the ottoman empire and right now I'm happy where the series is and i think I will be just as happy or happier when we switch timelines.

I love AC and I love Ezio. Even though I like Ezio I would like to see another character. I'm gonna buy the new AC game on day one and I'm gonna stick with the series til it ends. If they decide to drag it on then I might bail.

I personally would like to play as that girl assassin spoken of in the sanctuary that killed Cleopatra with her trusty Snake.

Oh yeah I totally agree, I even like the idea of being able to take control of Altair again :D
I don't know if anyone's checked out the Wikipedia page, but it's getting a lot more strategic, and the minion system is getting a lot more sophisticated and immersive, rather than that crap we were given for Brotherhood. I suppose just being a good game will make it successful...

And I have to agree with you there, although it is kind of tying in with real events, like the supposed end of the world in 2012. I can see where you're coming from though, it is getting a little bit silly.

I can't wait for it, I am totally gay for Ezio and am digging that rather dashing old man's beard on him.

Kinda weird that this has popped up since I've just finished playing Brotherhood again.
I do agree with you about Ezio and such, he's an awesome character, but I would do want to see other Assassin's in different times and stuff.
However, I am content with playing as Ezio again, and even more so Altair, since you only played as him for one game.
Plus, seeing as the story for the series is what it is, I can see them being able to make quite a few more games to finish the story, I'm sure they'll introduce more characters.

And reading about Revelations, it seems there's quite a few more stuff being added into it, and things being improved.
But anyway, I'm looking forward to the next game, and I'm not disappointed that we won't be getting a new character.

Yeah the minion thing is actually one of the things i'm most excited about. In brotherhood I never really needed my followers but i loved them all the same. Basically i would just keep them out in the field all the time but then they all turned in to fully fledged assassins and I make more more money than I can get rid of so i mostly just keep 'em around and call arrow storms on side missions to get an easy 100% completion.

Of course that reminds me of the thing I'm most worried about which is Ubisoft repeating that blasted 100% sync crap

I will probably speak heresy for a lot of people but Altair was personally the worst and most boring character from all AC characters, even Desmond had more charm than him in first one and i hated Desmond and idea that any part of the game happens in fictional present times.
It's only my opinion but Altair was a shallow character, we didn't know his past or anything about him, the first thing we actually learn is that he decided to break the Creed by killing civilian and his partner and after that being a total **** about it. Even with time when his character 'evolved' it looked like he was just pretending so he could just get his toys back and kill more civilians, only at the very last chapter i taken him seriously.
Ezio in comparison was an amazing character, not only we relive his birth but we also go trough his late childhood actually experiencing the reason he join the guild, we can try to relate to the character that feels alive and human at the same time, people were complaining that sometimes he behave like a moron around women but actually that is what helps me in immersion with that character, he looks and sounds 'true' where Altair was so grim and serious that if he would be more grim and serious his name would be Serious not Altair.
Brotherhood was amazing for me because when i played it i felt like i decided to meet my friend from childhood that i didn't see for 10 years and we decided to have fun like in the old times.
After that i was wondering that next assassin's creed will live us in the no where with Ezio, end of his life would be sold on portable consoles for heavy money or left for fan fiction writers to rape when Ezio meets Hermiona and they decided to have sex after Ezio assasinates Ron and Harry... i think i will write this...
Going back to the post, I Love Ezio for a lot of reasons and being able to see his olds years and finale of his life gives me possibility to think "Wow he had a great life (i know fictional), and it was worth living it with him"

The way you put it, Ezio was in the same setting for his two games, but that's not entirely true. Rome is a lot different from Venice, and I really felt that in Brotherhood. To me, the series just needs a new protagonist. Or, they could try developing Desmond more, although that would probably turn into an epic fail.

My problem with Assassin's creed is how easy it was. There's utterly no need for stealth as you can hack effortlessly through infinite amounts of guards just by using counter-kills, through all three of the games out at the moment. With the combo-kill system in Brotherhood it's now just one combo kill needed before you can slaughter an entire army just by smashing X. The stealth is meant to be a central feature of the game - striking anonymously out of the crowd and all that stuff.

Overpowering the protagonist turns the game into a movie. It appeals to fourteen-year-old boys and sixteen-year-old girls that like to feel like the ultimate hero, but the games themselves fail to provide a challenge.

Wait, why does it appeal to fourteen year old boys and sixteen year old girls? Thats oddly specific
Personally, i've just never been a fan of the assassin's creed series. I got number two and only got halfway through before i got bored of it and gave it to my friend. So i honestly don't care that much about what happens. Maybe they could give him superpowers, that would make it fun.

The fact that there arent actually any stealth mechanics annoys me, and no blending doesnt count.. blending is stupid... i'd love if they actually made it a stealth game... or at the very least give us the ability to duck/crouch or hide behind walls for cover

Well no, I have to disagree with you there on the 100% thing because it made the missions that bit more difficult and added more of a reason to be stealthy- just because you can take on every guard in Rome single-handedly as long as you have thumbs doesn't mean you should, necessarily.
...Although I can appreciate where you're coming from, it did make it half frustrating at times...

I have to say, the other thing that I disliked about the minions was that once they reached the highest level all of the things I'd been customising the whole time was maxed out and they all turned into clones. I liked the individuality of it all, it made them seem less like AIs.

Yes, I'm sorry for that but the point was we're he was still the Italian Assassin in Italy. When you look at how many settings they have at their disposal, setting it in the same country was a bit... unwise, even though it didn't detract anything from the game at all. And I do agree, Desmond's already been characterised as genuinely shit compared to Altair and Ezio. As long as he keeps his gorramn mouth shut most of the time he could get away with it.
