Does anyone else find Assassin's Creed to be rather repetitive? All I do basically is getting from viewpoint to viewpoint, save some citizens, perform some tasks and that's it, apart from the actual assassinations.

Even the fights are the same button-mashing sequences usually.

It looks great though (on my X360).

The first two missions I started to think this as well and was about to side with the reviewers who had only scored this game around the 7 mark. Then I decided to start taking my time - do everything: all the investigations, save all the citizens, get to all the view points... and I haven't been bored once. You really only get as much out of this game as you put in to it I think. You can rush through it in no time at all and really not enjoy yourself too much. Or you can take the time to enjoy all the work that the designers have put in to this game. I played for about four hours last night (alot for me these days) and only stopped because I wanted to catch the new episode of Ultimate Figther - there was nothing else that would have dragged me away from Assassin's Creed.
And i think if your fighting has degenerated into button mashing you are probably doing it wrong. Get into a fight with five guards adn try to kill each with a counter attack - button mashing will get you nowhere but back to the last checkpoint.

Right, there is another thread concerning Assassin's Creed, although that one was created before its release and discussing if the game was overhyped or not, but it sort of derailed into a evaluation after a while. However, I will post what I wrote there since it somewhat fits in, although somewhat edited.

Widell said:
Right, I completed the game a few hours ago after doing everything except collecting flags, killing templars and completing a few Xbox Achievements (which are stupid anyway).

I must say that I really liked the game, I loved the story (which I will not go into since I will try to not spoil anything for anyone) and I think a follow-up has a huge potential. The drunks and beggars were there for a reason, you're supposed to deal with them. Anyhow, I did get annoyed with the fact that the drunks only picked a fight with me, and no one else in the city.

The controls were great although the game did not really make a good job explaining them by itself, they were quite easy to learn anyhow.

One thing that got annoying after a while was that the investigation game play was a tad too repetitive, after a few assassinations; climbing towers and murdering guards became somewhat dull, the unique and huge streets diminished the feeling of doing the same thing over and over again, though, and since pickpocketing, interrogation and eavesdropping added new story elements they never really got dull, for me at least.

Another thing that annoyed me was the area called "The Kingdom". It was too big and too pointless if you do not care about collecting every flag and every templar. They could have added some quests or perhaps even a target to that area which was pretty well designed.

The AI was a bit too stupid, if you break line of sight and then hide, fine, they lose you. I can buy that even if it was a bit silly some times, but if you then reveal yourself and basically walk forward to pat them on the shoulder before they are gone again, they do not have the slightest problem with that, they sort of have a goldfish memory.

The graphics and animations were impressive, sometimes you found a glitch with objects being partially ethereal but that is to be expected of any game with detailed animations really.

In conclusion this is probably the best game I have played this year, I would recommend it to everyone. It has it's flaws like most games but I have more or less enjoyed the 25 - 30 hours I spent in "The Animus".

Thanks for the replies, I'll try the different approaches, I guess.

As for fight button mashing, that's probably not how it is, but constant counterattacking seems to get me through 90% of the fights. I'm yet to be bothered by the goldfish memory of guards, I was a bit bothered by how arbitrary certain missions are, as in; I have no clue why I was gonna search there and I happen to eavesdrop on the right person or bump into the one I should pickpocket.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good game.

I think this game suffers from the amount of hype it had preceding it to the marketplace. Sandbox games all tend to have the same issues/problems and in the same areas (repetitive gameplay, fighting engine, etc). These games are best played with pure enjoyment in mind and not a race to the finish style of play. I will definitely take my time and even try and collect the flags.

Here's my two cents and pretty much what I've been saying to everyone:

It's a great looking game that has a story that has me intrigued. The gameplay is pretty slick and straight forward. However after a couple of hours the missions get into a rut and pretty much stay there...and I mean the missions stay the same with no variety and no challenge. For me it's a - I don't want to say boring - repetitive game with only the story driving me to finish playing it. I love assassination games with hours and hours of trial and error but "AC" didn't have that at all. In fact it's a pretty easy game when it comes down to it especially when compared to other Ubisoft games. I would have traded it in today for credit for "Mass Effect" but I forgot it at home.

I realized today while talking to a guy in line at the game store that it's great for people who have limited time to game. The guy said he only had an hour here and there to play. I have a tendency to tear through games (I have to admit that a great deal of my free time is spent gaming) and hit boredom in one Saturday afternoon. If you have a bit of time to hit some view points, rescue some folks, find a few flags, and talk to an informer before quitting then yeah "Assassin's Creed" is perfect for that.

So I guess I wholeheartedly recommend "Assassin's Creed" for the casual gamer (less than 10ish hours a week). If you're the type to tear through a game on a Saturday then rent it.

I am tempted to side with the 7s some reviewers have been giving.

I've not bought the game because I fear I won't like.
A couple of my friends decided, against their word, to go buy it anyway and are apparently really enjoying it.

I wouldn't be too swayed by low reviews. I'm confident you'll get your money's worth out of it.

I was really looking forward to this as an open-world game, and was pretty annoyed every time they broke up the action with pointless and wooden dialogue and blocking me off parts of the city for no good reason. Assassin's Creed has a lot of good ideas that are pretty poorly executed. Having fun sometimes though, so that's something!

Assassin's Creed is absolute shit, but my eyes were too busy rolling at the stupid and incomprehensible plot to notice for most of the game. I think maybe the developers decided to have a competition to see who could come up with the most jarring method of ripping us straight out of the otherwise visually tantalizing game experience.

Mammoth fucking blue walls in the middle of a medieval city? Check.
Long periods of various assholes on moralistic (and unskippable) tirades in between actual play? Check.
AI that will catch you every time for riding your horse too fast but is still too stupid to notice nine people being stabbed in a ten yard radius? Yep.

I found it to be pretty good but that type of game is no longer my cup of tea. Perhaps I've outgrown it (not saying it is for kids but just the evolution of my gaming preferences), or I've played too many of that type for it to really grab a hold over me.

If you want to get your money's worth out of this game rather than going for the full version, or if you want to test it out to see if you like before purchasing the full version, I would suggest Assassin's Creed for Mobile [http://www.gameloft.co.uk/mobile-games/assassins-creed/]. There is a demo for it to try before purchasing.

I would strongly suggest you try this game only if you have a decent phone, otherwise all the features won't be there and that could really dilute the gaming experience.

Assassins creed is repetitive even the assassinations are the same all it is is jumping from building to building kill the occasional archer and then go off to kill Al Mualim. and thats you finished.

I personally couldn't get enough of just randomly jumping around, doing crazy flips, and stabbing 3 guards just to run away and come back and do it again.

I really enjoyed Assassins Creed, i got it on the xbox when it came out, completed it ane and a half times before getting bored and selling it. Then about a month ago i borrowed the pc version from a friend and played that through. The best way to enjoy it is not to grind everything but to take your time anmd appreciate that annoying a single guard and sprinting around the city gathering up enemies in your wake is far superior to playing it more along the lines of a "stealth em up". Play it for fun, just dont finish it or the plot shits itself inside out. Oh and the cutscenes are awful and unskipable but other than that an awesome game

It strikes me as a game that was unfinished. So mich of it is astoundingly good whilst the actual gameplay gets a bit old pretty quickly. If there had been as much time put into the gameplay as there was into the graphics then it wouldn't have just been a good game, it would have been fantastic.

I'm glad I played it and the story kept me interested. I have high hopes for the sequel.

I haven't been spending so much time on my PS3 but assassins creed is good. But yes repetitive... And I find it really annoying how counter-attack beats every guard except the templars... but all you have to do is push them over.

The whole game is a bit formulaic and so I haven't spent much time on it except messing around letting my friends play it and stuff.

Wow, this is some major thread necromancy. I think Assassin's Creed is a really good game. And don't forget to do Eagle Vision above the bed at the end.
