They're probably of the "just because you don't believe in it doesn't mean it doesn't exist" school of thought. For example, if you lived in the desert, had never seen a tiger, never heard of a tiger, and knew nothing about tigers, you wouldn't believe in the existence of tigers. However, the first time you go to a jungle and hey look at that, there's a tiger chewing on your face, your lack of belief would be debunked just as much as intellectuals like to try and debunk the existence of souls, God, or anything else larger or more significant than the next paycheque, SUV purchase, home mortgage and/or blowjob.Semper_Fidelis53 said:
The problem goes both ways, atheists complain about religious folk hurling scripture at them and religious folk complain about atheists hurling Richard Dawkins at them (I suspect a Bible hurts more than The God Delusion if it hits you square in the temple). It's just that religious folk have been doing this for centuries while atheists used to be relatively quiet until the rise of the internet. They're both loud and angry, but the atheists seem new and interesting.

Atheists follow different threads of logic than people who believe in religion. Its like showing someone a color and asking their opinion on it. Anyone who feels the need to flame war over a topic as petty as religion should stop...and think about video games instead.
It's not a problem with (atheists/religious people), it's a problem with vocal (atheists/religious people) who try to censor the beliefs of others. Most actually live side-by-side in communities without any problems.
(Most) atheists beliefs are grounded in logic, whereas many religious people make the assumption that their scripture is true. I don't have a problem with religious people, just people who make illogical interpretations of scripture/take it as absolute fact, these people also seem to be the ones who take offense at atheism.
A: It is difficult for people to live without the idea of a higher power watching out for them. Atheism means that their is nothing but life and why sacrifice, struggle or work.

both sides can, and will argue until the end of all life as we know it, so there's really no point in trying to prevent it. someone will always think the other side is stupid. we might as well put our time into doing more useful things.
Normally, but their are tow few civil discussion. I make a point to keep the conversation civil or end it. The reason is that both world views has an emotional and ethical invetment from believers that are contra to one another. Atheist believe Theist are delusional and Theist believe Atheist are emotionally closed off. So, both side drag at the pantie-waste argument instead of honestly assessing the situation and agreeing to disagree. I always enter discussion like this knowing that I agree to disagree already but I am always will to listen.

Look at it this way: what do children do the second they find out Santa Claus isn't real? After they finish crying, that is. They find younger kids and tell them Santa isn't real.
Atheists who have just figured out the big secret tend to be dicks. I was a dick. I had friends who are dicks. I know a guy named Richard, who I call dick. (That's a dick move, I know.) If you are an Atheist who just figured out that there is no god: Congratulations. Have a cupcake and go away. You're not going to single handedly convince theists that their god doesn't exist by arguing with them over the internet. No one changes their opinions in flamewars. It only serves to polarize opinions.
Just eat your cupcake and wait for everyone else to arrive at some kind of answer.
