Be that as it may, the United States is supposed to be a nation that seperates church and state, which is a little bit ironic.

The gist is some Atheists what "So help me God" taken away from President-Elect Obama's inauguration speech. Thoughts?
Religious fanatics of almost all faiths want atheists stricken from the face of the earth. We don't listen to them when they talk silly, why should we listen to atheists when they get verbal diarhea?

I personaly would have to take it with so many grains of salt, that I would die of sodium poisoning. Same with political correctness.

Man I hate the atheist bigots too they do scary things like talk and bring lawsuits. Other bigots who burn witches, fly planes into buildings, exploit tax loopholes and molest children are fine in my book though.

Seriously what the hell.

Thats just stupid. A true atheist doesn't care about things like that. (I'm an atheist) If people want to believe in something I think is as realistic as a flying pizzamonster from pluto then I let them. They think I will burn in hell for all of eternity because I don't believe but they don't bother me with it.

What I mean is that we don't care about stuff like that. There is something called tradition and in the inauguration speech they have always said that. And if it makes the religious people happy then go for it. To atheists it doesn't matter. God doesn't exist no matter how much you keep praising him.

Killing in the name of god, now thats something I can get mad about and would wipe out entire civilizations for...

You do know that talking about yourself in the third person is a sign of mental instability?

That is nonsense. Religion has always been a part of our nation to a certain extent, "under God" being in the pledge of allegiance for example. If Mr. Obama wants to say it their is no reason why he should not in this case.

Look I agree that America should be a secular nation, but that doesn't mean we can't stop people people from saying "under God" or "in front of God" or whatever in their oaths/pledges. That's just as bad as if we forced them to say it by law.

I agree. If nothing else, its a part of what this nation was founded on. Not to mention the fact that a large percentage of Americans believe in God. Wont it be just as offensive to them if its taken out?

am I the only one who see's a vague contradiction here? I agree that killing in the name of God is a pretty lame thing to do, but wiping out a civilization because of it, is just as bad. I dunno, maybe you were trying to be ironic?

Aw, boo hoo. Are you afraid your children might get converted?
no there needs to be a seperation of church and state(look at the 40s to 70s propaganda and opresion)
We've been living like this for hundreds of years. Why change the foundation of our country if it isn't affecting us in any way?
but this isnt the foundation of this country I AM TIRED that people think this is a christian nation this goverment was established TO GET AWAY FROM RELIGOUS INTOLERENCE
Getting away from religious intolerance and not tolerating religion are two entirely separate things. Many atheists seem to fail to realize this difference. I'm religious, but if you don't see things my way I don't get bent out of shape about it. I might have an interesting discussion with you about our differences, but I'm not going to call you an idiot and refuse to talk to you ever again.

Cause it's not like atheists haven't done some terrible things [sarcasm]. Seriously though, religion has caused some pretty heinous things throughout history. I think the difference with religion and atheism is the fact that there is no real unifying organization for atheists, so you don't get things like Crusades.

Why not just miss out the god bit, who'd notice?
Christians. Hundreds of thousands of Christians. There'd be uproar.

As far as it goes, I don't really give a rat's for two reasons:

1. I'm not American, but, more importantly;
2. Unless he starts passing laws forcing everyone to convert, his beliefs aren't really relevant.

Our royal family are religious, our Prime Minister seems to be too. They don't interfere or force it upon us so we extend them the same courtesy. That way, everyone's happy and nobody gets fired up over silly little things like this.

Really? So all that stuff in the Constitution about being a secular nation is just filler then?
Being a nation that supports the freedom to chose one's faith does not make that nation secular.

AceDiamond said:

Theoretically, yes. In practice, not so much. The nation is predominately Christian, and it was founded by Christians. That's just the way it is, and until it's no longer true, continued deference to God is likely to be a big part of public ceremonies.
