Atrocious Voice Acting in Games

Well, Prototype is the only game I'm paid attention to voice acting in lately, and Alex Mercer's voice acting is really annoying and schizophrenic. That might be because of his lack of characterization, though.

I'm assuming you never played a video game prior to the PS2 era? I mean, FFX's voice acting wasn't anything great, but at least it employed professional actors who were recorded in actual studio. In earlier eras, it was fairly common for the voice-acting to be "performed" by the programmers and their friends, improperly using a cheap microphone.

No, I played through my Dreamcast and N64 nicely. Tidus just really got to me because I especially loved the plot from FFX.
Subpar voice acting with a mediocre game never really bothered me but when Square spent so much money developing that game I don't see why they had to throw that atrocity in there.

Oblivion had 14 voice actors in the entire game. Also, it's funny as hell to hear NPCs talk to each other, especially if they have the same voice.

If they at least attempted to make several different voices from the same actor, maybe it wouldn't sound as bad as it does... or at least splurge and give a few bucks to some Bethesda employees to take a stab at it. It can't be that hard, can it?

That's the one thing I hate about it.

Wow. I was going to mention Yuna from Final Fantasy X (she was absolutely appalling), and say I'd never heard less life in a voice actor, but that Karen from that video proves me wrong. Dear me, my ears are bleeding.

Are there games you've played where the voice acting was terrible? Was everyone just awful, or was there one or two that stood out as abysmal? And why were they so bad?

I've recently been playing Sly 2, after purchasing the whole series for the first time recently, and it has got to the point now where I can't listen to Constable Neyla without physically cringing at the voice acting. Her accent meanders between cockney, posh drawl, American and fuck knows what else. How can you put so much time, energy and money into a game and overlook blatantly atrocious voice acting? It beggars belief.

Play Destroy all Humansath of the Furon and you will know that voice acting cant get worse

Lol, you didn't hear about that fiasco? Apparently the CEO of the company that licensed the game for the US didn't bother to even try to hire anything remotely close to professional voice actors for the english language version. He just got his family and friends to do it. The game manual has them listed, and half of the actors have the same last name!

Anyhow, since I haven't actually played Chaos Wars, my vote goes to the first Baten Kaitos game. Dubbed JRPGS can be a hit or miss voice-wise, but GOD, I wanted to be able to turn off the voices so badly.

That line was terrible and even more hilariously delivered, and I wasn't paying attention. It wasn't until my friend had me restart the game for him to watch and we saw it again that we both noticed how hilariously bad that was.
