EDIT: New update! Now has multiplayer! Buggy an unreliable though it is, it's a huge step in the right direction. Can't wait for it to be ironed out.

Yes, it is a thing that exists and it controls just as I always dreamed in would. Everyone needs to know about and play this.

The guy in the video isn't playing it right (you don't have to shoot both hooks at once) but you get the idea. Play it here.

Well I just spent an hour playing this damn game. It's amazing what you can do with a browser player these days.

I actually ended up doing pretty well after a few tries. I even managed to kill 10 titans in a row once. That was a rush! There need to be more games like this.

Yeesh, really makes you appreciate that fighting Titans isn't as easy at it looks. There's a bit of a learning curve with those hooks. Well on the plus side I was skeptical about the official attack on Titan video game. All they need to do is make something like this with a more AAA value and I'll be sold.

Also I really have to give the devloper credit. To quote Yahtzee "A good zombie game is a game where you can take the zombies out and replace them with anything else and it'd still be a zombie game." And that describes this game perfectly. Even though the Titans look laughable, they're still titans, slow, lumbering, stupid, occasional abnormal, only weak point is the back of the neck. The only main difference is that they try to crush you instead of eat you, but now I'm nitpicking. They do a fair bit of crushing too. I actually really like how they have a variety of attack animations based on where you are. Well done.

When I read the word "titan" in the title I wasn't imagining something quite so... derpy.

Plenty of derp to go around in there too. Now granted some of the derp is appropriately creepy, but sometimes it goes a bit too far.

Nope. Didn't even know it was an anime.

To the youtubes!

...

So... the titular titans are giant naked retards?

Okay. Those have to be some of the least menacing monsters ever. Which is quite an achievement for something the size of a church steeple.

The titans are kind of weird as far as threat design goes. They look so silly in one scene and then downright terrifying the next. Part of this is that while they can look goofy they also kill a bunch of people in very disturbing ways.

Well, I only watched like four random Youtube videos, so I'm hardly an expert.

One of them had a female titan chasing a bunch of the cape-two-swords-and-grapples people through a forest. She managed to be kind of menacing since she looked crazy in a focussed kind of way rather than a sitting in your own shit kind of way. Also, significantly better animated.

I might be asking the wrong people here, but is the actual show any good?

Yeah, I love the anime, but it they have a way of making me laugh...then they catch someone in their hands and you remember that their main method of killing people is eating them, then you stop laughing. Not to mention some of them look more than a little scary.

Some people argue that horror hits the hardest when your guard is down. I'd say give it a shot at the very least, but if you don't like it I'll be the first to admit it isn't for everyone.

Also, something that you should know is that those titans are basically just foot soldiers. The "main bad guys" for lack of a better term are the colossal and armored titans. They look like this.

Well I'd say they're actually more like big naked zombies.

It's actually one of the most refreshing concepts in anime for a long time. The first 5 or so episodes paint a fairly grim and dystopian setting that's pretty darn effective. And like I said, sometimes the derpiness of the titans is good nightmare fuel. Too bad the show totally ruins itself by going full shounen, where suddenly every prominent character is a super genius in one way or another, and where it drags out the pre-conflict stage over 3 episodes.

It's the best anime of this year. It's really really good. Interestingly the manga is not as good in my opinion. The scenes are taken from the manga word for word but the anime has them all in chronological order instead of in flashbacks.

In my opinion...

HELL TO THE FUCKING YES!!!

*ahem*

It's been a while since a recent anime has kept me at the edge of my seat... and basically do that for almost every episode... There's certain points where you may see it coming and other times where you wish that... didn't... just... happen... (unless you seem to not grow some form of an attachment for some of these characters...)

Anyway, it's worth checking out the first two episodes, at least... (or five six, but my reasoning for watching the first five six episodes would lead to spoiling... and that's not my style...) Also...
BADASS OPENING MUSIC IS BADASS!!! (Enough said...)

(Edit was made due to [redacted]...)

While the show does employ a lot of Shonen tropes I'm always a little confused when I see people say this since I always thought that the show was very good about avoiding the out and out cliches.

Like when they first graduate and you think from then on titans will go down like nothing, but in the anime at least even the smallest titans are always played up as being a big threat.

And when Eren discovers his ability they treat his reaction with surprising maturity. Contrast with Naruto. Naruto can't seem to really wrap his head around why having a murderous demon inside him puts other people on edge. He approaches all social situations with the same unwarranted optimism and anyone who isn't eventually won over to his side is just an evil bigot. Eren however not only understands why people are afraid of him, he doesn't really hold it against them. We don't assume anyone who doesn't like Eren is evil, just scared. Sure one of the themes of the show is that panicky humans are just as dangerous as titans but the show is also "But you shouldn't hold being scared against them because it's a natural response."

Eren is brash but always respectful to his seniors. I think that's probably what makes him tolerable where Ichigo and Naruto come off as idiots. He defers to his captain's judgement, trusts his team members, realizes that he can't do everything on his own, and grows as a character. I haven't read the manga so I don't know if he gets worse later on, but as far as the anime progression goes it's refreshing to see a Shonen hero who doesn't take a "my way or the highway" attitude towards every conflict. In some ways Mikasa actually fills that role better.

As far as growth goes skillwise I don't see any significant jumps in a ability.

Mikasa -starts bamf, stays bamf, no real rise or drop in skill level

Eren - Starts kind of mediocre, gets better during military training, still mediocre in the field save for one or two kind of awesome moments and other things I won't mention because spoilers.

Armin - Not so good at fighting, has always been good at thinking on his feet, finds that he's good at forming plans in high pressure situations. Once again this development is spread out over the current 19 episodes.

Everyone else - has good days, has bad days, people get eaten, aside from Jean who seems to have jumped into the role of leader they haven't developed any major competency either.

The thing is, the "derpy" Titans are the most disturbing. The female one you mention looks menacing and all that, but the regular ones are just messed up. Yes, at first glance they look like nude retards, but they are 4+ meter tall, nearly indestructible and feed on only human flesh. Oh, and there are hundreds upon hundreds of them. Seeing a ugly menacing monster devour your friends and family is nasty, but there's just an added layer of disturbing when the thing doing it essentially looks innocent and oblivious to everything.

The show itself is pretty good. Pretty dark, especially early on. Characters get killed of pretty regularly, and the whole thing is quite gory.

I really enjoyed the game, spent a couple of hours zipping around ignoring the titans and I can't wait for the 3DS game.

I'm afraid I'm not really up with the lingo here.

What's a "shounen"? Google says it's the Japanese word for boy, but I'm not sure what that has to do with everyone being a genius.

Umm... help?

I watch anime and I am not that good with those terms either. But then again, I don't really care for genres, sub-genres and such. Something is either enjoyable or it is not, I don't really care about what category people stick it in.

Basically shounen is manga (not anime) aimed at teenage boys. They are not really known for emotional depth, as much as they are cool action sequences. As for why them being genius would be relevant, I think Shinji means that it doesn't really have much character depth as the characters are all "badass" in one way or another.

Personally I disagree for the reasons somebody stated above.

The easiest way to describe it using Western examples would be that something like Pacific Rim is "shounen" whereas something like The Last of Us would be "Seinen" (manga aimed at adults). It's not the most accurate way to describe it considering the terms are meant for manga not other mediums, but hopefully you get the idea.

Casual Shinji believes that it basically follows the typical conventions and tropes of Japanese manga/anime aimed at teenage guys. Although personally I don't really agree that it is comparable to such shows as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and such. It may follow similar themes at times, but it is a lot darker and less over the top.

The only well known shounen I'd compare it to would be Fullmetal Alchemist, but it is less "silly" and over the top than that as well. My only real criticism of the show is that they tend to do too much re-capping. They seem to think we are too thick to remember everything and so I have seen the same clips around 15 times at the start of each episode.

OT: It looks like a cute little game, but I think for a game to be decent it'd need to be along the difficulty levels of Dark Souls. If killing Titans is something people can do with ease then it doesn't really fit in with the theme of the show/manga seeing as they are supposed to be extremely difficult. Especially considering the mortality rate of those fighting them.

Plus the physics would need to be pretty damn advanced to be able to do it "right", and most triple A developers don't even have physics that good. Although I am talking about a fully licensed professional game. For a cute little free one I think they are doing a pretty good job.

'shounen' means boy - shounen manga is generally aimed at pre-teen to to mid teen boys, so think Saturday morning cartoon kind of fare.

Seinen is older teen/young adult men (so generally more 'mature themes', gore, fanservice), Shojo is Girls manga.
