So... the titular titans are giant naked retards?
Okay. Those have to be some of the least menacing monsters ever. Which is quite an achievement for something the size of a church steeple.
Well I'd say they're actually more like big naked zombies.
It's actually one of the most refreshing concepts in anime for a long time. The first 5 or so episodes paint a fairly grim and dystopian setting that's pretty darn effective. And like I said, sometimes the derpiness of the titans is good nightmare fuel. Too bad the show totally ruins itself by going full shounen, where suddenly every prominent character is a super genius in one way or another, and where it drags out the pre-conflict stage over 3 episodes.
I'm afraid I'm not really up with the lingo here.
What's a "shounen"? Google says it's the Japanese word for boy, but I'm not sure what that has to do with everyone being a genius.
Umm... help?
I watch anime and I am not that good with those terms either. But then again, I don't really care for genres, sub-genres and such. Something is either enjoyable or it is not, I don't really care about what category people stick it in.
Basically shounen is manga (not anime) aimed at teenage boys. They are not really known for emotional depth, as much as they are cool action sequences. As for why them being genius would be relevant, I think Shinji means that it doesn't really have much character depth as the characters are all "badass" in one way or another.
Personally I disagree for the reasons somebody stated above.
The easiest way to describe it using Western examples would be that something like Pacific Rim is "shounen" whereas something like The Last of Us would be "Seinen" (manga aimed at adults). It's not the most accurate way to describe it considering the terms are meant for manga not other mediums, but hopefully you get the idea.
Casual Shinji believes that it basically follows the typical conventions and tropes of Japanese manga/anime aimed at teenage guys. Although personally I don't really agree that it is comparable to such shows as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and such. It may follow similar themes at times, but it is a lot darker and less over the top.
The only well known shounen I'd compare it to would be Fullmetal Alchemist, but it is less "silly" and over the top than that as well. My only real criticism of the show is that they tend to do too much re-capping. They seem to think we are too thick to remember everything and so I have seen the same clips around 15 times at the start of each episode.
OT: It looks like a cute little game, but I think for a game to be decent it'd need to be along the difficulty levels of Dark Souls. If killing Titans is something people can do with ease then it doesn't really fit in with the theme of the show/manga seeing as they are supposed to be extremely difficult. Especially considering the mortality rate of those fighting them.
Plus the physics would need to be pretty damn advanced to be able to do it "right", and most triple A developers don't even have physics that good. Although I am talking about a fully licensed professional game. For a cute little free one I think they are doing a pretty good job.
