Some of you guys look like you need a Doctor ...
you know, to removed that stick from a certain spot where the sun don't shine.
My opinion of you guys is lowering ... so negative about things. -_-'

But that's my own opinion and all of you guys have your own opinions about this anime.
Though I do understand, some of spoilers people drop do seem ... bleh. If it is true it might drop my hope for this anime.

I do like what they are doing though, even though some of the characters seem a bit too cliche in anime terms.
I'll go along and see if it has anything else to offer.

I can see this anime getting incredibly "retarded" as you said, but I have to ask who are these 'masses' you are talking about? Are they the Shounen fans, some other type of fan or the incredibly annoying type who thinks that Sword Art Online is the new god of anime and genre?

[sub][sub]Seriously calling SAO the "best" is a bit too much. Especially if there are many, many other anime that could beat it. Clannad for romance, Gurren Lagann for climatic events and EVEN, EVEN Gundam Seed can beat it in action, character and plot. Sorry I had to get this out.[/sub][/sub]

Decided to give the manga a read and hey, it turns retarded.
Great.

I was looking forward to seeing this be a good, enjoyable, but dark and non-standard anything. What a shame.

I was thinking so too until the plot twist that'll probably be coming in... an episode or two, I suppose.
Shame, it had some real potential. Looks like it's going to be wasting it and becoming just another standard anime.
I never really saw this whole "unique plot" people have been claiming SnK to be mainly due to the fact that swap titans with vampires and there you have the main plot twist of SnK, the premise of humans fighting back aren't that new either, considering stories such as the Salvation War and Shin Megami Tensei's Strange Journey tackle a similar plot with better execution, whereas SnK will eventually degenerate into a powerlevel manga where the only punches it will offer will involve key characters dying, Eren transforming and just that.

Yes, the masses who believe that SAO is a great anime when it's normal at best, the same masses who objectify anime, the same masses who are the target demographic of every studio who aims to make a quick buck, the equivalent of CoD audience in anime, manga and light novels.

I wouldn't know about the anime, but the manga is well crafted, began reading it years ago due it winning the Kodansha Manga Award.

While not being surprising or innovative, it manages to integrate elements from the horror, medieval dark fantasy, psychological and other styles of non mainstream mangas into a very well rounded shonen product. Character design, rythm and art are all lacking tough, and thus it fails to engage me; and by art I do not mean the style, that suits it fine, but the boring use of panels and angles.

Overall I would recommend reading it (and I assume seeing it i guess) if you are looking for an interesting shonen with fresh concepts compared to the big series. Rough around the edges, but worth your time.

I know it's not "the most original thing evaaaaar" and the idea's been done before, but when the end of episode 5 came I had thought maybe they'd do something cool and actually have some consequences.
Like maybe keeping the main character dead, or if he does come back to life, maybe keep him crippled. Keep the shonen protagonist attitude and perspective from a commander position or something, I dunno.

But no, no consequences, no tension, just "LET'S GIVE PEOPLE SUPER POWERS 'N' SHIT 'N' MAKE GIANTS FIGHT 'N' IT'LL BE SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL"

Even Gurren Lagann was more groundbreaking than this and it was basically made to take Shonen tropes to the extreme. That shouldn't happen.

That's the drawback with it really, there are no permanent consequence for the main character and the titans are just there for the sake of being there, especially when it's exposed that Titans don't really need to eat people for sustenance.

Attack On Titan is ok. The story is basically 'War of The Worlds + Valkyria Chronicles + Predator' and it does that well and is pretty original. So far there have been some very potent moments but it feels lacking, Eren is a really unlikeable main character and pretty much every other character is canon fodder. Also I have a bad feeling that it is going to go into 'ass-pull' territory very soon with shit like 'the world is actually a giant Titan' 'the city is made out of Titans' but I dunno. It did give us this gem though:
I have higher hopes for it than that. They haven't given any indication of it becoming bullshitty yet. I can understand why you don't like Eren, pretty much his entire character so far is rage personified, but he seems like an appropriate person for the world he lives in. I'm not sure how they are gonna resolve his current... 'arc' without some kind of deus ex machina, though. At this point, the direction they take would make or break the series.
I think there is a sign of it becoming 'bullshitty' because, like you said, they are obviously gonna bring Eren back as they are still developing his character but having gone through what he has it would be pretty much impossible to do it in a way that doesn't feel like an ass-pull. Mikasa is cool though as well as the potato girl so I have to give it that much as long as they stick around and it would be nice to actually develop some internal conflict to devlop where the wealthy are actually the bad guys (it has been implied I know).

read a bit of the manga and it just seems...silly

Something about the premise I can't really get into

Gonna wait it out when the whole thing is finished to see if it is good

in the meantime, this will take up my time

I started with reading the mange, but after
Eren gets titan powers
I just couldn't read more (I know it's only a little in, but still). I hate unexplained ignorance of conservation of mass that is created to put the protagonist on even footing. I just wanted battles between the small army of fast humans with bionic-hips versus the horde of man-eating giants. I was hoping the anime would at least have good animation for the battles, but with how the giants' speed and intelligence seems to drop while they are on screen, the fights never really got to me. Add on how I can't stand the art-style (I can't stop staring at the outlines, as if they are face-wide warts), and I can't watch it.

It has a good opening theme though

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised at the reaction in this thread. It's like you were expecting the greatest artistic achievement in anime or something.

Gotta say Im loving Attack on Titan atm. It's doing very well to hold my attention, something that a lot of animes I've watched recently haven't done.

I like the feel of the whole series. It's a survival and a fighting series...and hell I was not expecting episode 5.

But it gets better every week.. and EVERYBODY is INSANE!

I saw some promotional stuff on the series a few months ago and it caught my interest. I like the idea behind it and Greek mythology isn't a subject which anime draws inspiration from often.

But, like almost every other Anime to come out, it ends up being an interesting concept that rethreads old ground and resorts to some serious clichéd shit. It's tired, formulaic and ultimately boring past a certain point.

The anime industry is the very definition of stagnation at the moment, though I still poke around every so often to see if some titles with potential are being aired. The next big thing is the new GiTS, though the fact it's just a reboot gives me no hope that it will offer the same punch as the original series/films. I'm one of the few "fans" that would like to see them breaking away from the series roots and try to be it's own thing, adopting "modern" prospective scientific developments into the fold and evolving the series from that.

That said, I'm fear they are just going to either A:) Retrace the original concepts and Science Fiction elements, while modernising the "characters" by fitting them into popular character tropes of the moment; or B:) ditch plausibility altogether and just make a Trashy Action Sci-Fi title.

I'm waiting for the next Cowboy Bebop, that completely flips the table of what people expect from anime, but I've been waiting for a long-ass time.

From the title intro every episode that is EXACTLY what you think the series is going to be about...

Then I read a bit of the wiki and things start to get REALLY strange and it happens very quickly. The setting has a very interesting premise and then it hops aboard the banana boat to crazytown.

Are people really complaining at stuff not being explained when there's just been 5 episodes released?

And I liked how the person that said there was no point in the titans being there since they don't have any reason to eat people. You know, like zombies, no reason at all.

Anyways, if you like it keep watching it, I'm guessing a lot of unanswered questions will be brought to light soon enough if it's following the manga.

I personally kinda like the twists that others have been complaining about, but then again if experience has taught me anything it's that my opinion and the general opinion of the Escapist tend to clash.
Yeah I loved the twist as well and I love the fact that the manganese ultimate end isn't clear yet which makes me want to keep reading so I can see how it will all unfold.

I only got to know this series through anime, and so far I am enjoying it (ep6).
But I also know that after ep 7 is where people started to think that the story turned to s@@t.
I think the best thing about Attack on titans right now is the amount of fanfics that spawned off of it.
I was getting tired of Eva fanfic, so its a nice change.

The discussion is pretty evenly split between those who've only seen the anime and those that know what happens in the manga.

It's pretty alright, slightly above average at some points. Talking about the anime, i wouldn't touch the manga with a 10ft pole.

They are at best in late 1700's, early 1800's tech, they are not supposed to know conservation of mass, also it doesn't seem they are violating it as the titans seem to have next to no mass.

Most of the battles are indeed between small groups of fast humans vs titans. After 3 years of manga the main character has fought titans in titan form twice I think, and the climax of those fights where not that.

Wouldn't know about the anime, but the "regular titans" are supposed to be dumb and slow, there are special titans that are not.

Don't care either way, this manga shares the same category as Code Geass for me in many aspects and will read it till the end same as Code, but mhee... just clarifying stuff.

Thanks, now I can feel a little bit less annoyed about most of those aspects; however, with the mass subject, I just mean creating something out of nothing without going into incredibly futuristic (around or above Star Trek level) tech. I'm just not a fan of the trope. Even if the titans have no mass, not being able to explain how the kid compiles all the components necessary to create the deus ex machina bot of justice, before creating it (or immediately after), turns me away from any story.
