I hate unexplained ignorance of conservation of mass that is created to put the protagonist on even footing. I just wanted battles between the small army of fast humans with bionic-hips versus the horde of man-eating giants. I was hoping the anime would at least have good animation for the battles, but with how the giants' speed and intelligence seems to drop while they are on screen, the fights never really got to me.
They are at best in late 1700's, early 1800's tech, they are not supposed to know conservation of mass, also it doesn't seem they are violating it as the titans seem to have next to no mass.

Most of the battles are indeed between small groups of fast humans vs titans. After 3 years of manga the main character has fought titans in titan form twice I think, and the climax of those fights where not that.

Wouldn't know about the anime, but the "regular titans" are supposed to be dumb and slow, there are special titans that are not.

Don't care either way, this manga shares the same category as Code Geass for me in many aspects and will read it till the end same as Code, but mhee... just clarifying stuff.
Thanks, now I can feel a little bit less annoyed about most of those aspects; however, with the mass subject, I just mean creating something out of nothing without going into incredibly futuristic (around or above Star Trek level) tech. I'm just not a fan of the trope. Even if the titans have no mass, not being able to explain how the kid compiles all the components necessary to create the deus ex machina bot of justice, before creating it (or immediately after), turns me away from any story.
Magic, that is probably the best explanation we will get. You have to suspend your sense of disbelief. Considering the origin of the Titans are still a mystery we have no idea how it works and considering we only get 1 chapter a month... It probably will be a while.

Ehh... well, I brought myself up to date due this thred and in the couple of months haven't read stuff has gone batshit crazy. At least it seems to be self coherent, but now it's clear the titans have mass (probably on par with birds regarding mass/volume) BUT the dude is not a deus ex machina bot of justice, in fact soon(ish) in the anime it will be apparent he is not that special.

But if you don't like shonens and their wacky shit, i would suggest to forget about this one. It is clearly a shonen and having cool stuff > makes sense.

so for once i actually looked up something i saw on the escapist being discussed, and holy hell i'm enjoying this anime alot so far, i feel like some people are being extremely nitpicky or have very high standards, but so far it's pretty good

Ive watched every episode out yet and read a little of the manga. But in all honesty, I cant see the appeal to the show. Yes the fights are pretty badass, but it only serves us up to a point, because there is very little else that can be done with enemies who can only be killed by slicing a chunk of their neck with blades.

The second problem is that every character in this show is completely unlikeable. Yes. Everyone. Every last character on this show is someone you want to see get dissolved with acid and you simply cant care what happens to them. Because there are only 3 character traits on handout:

quiet, angsty prodigy ( Mikasa, Levi, the dad, the commander who trains them )

loudmouthed, honorbound, angsty idiot ( Eren )

panicking, whiney, weak, inept, cowardly, socialy retarded mommy's boy ( everyone else; especially Armin ).

And any character who you thought you might develop some kind of relationship too is quickly put in line. Potatogirl, who I liked from the very beginning just end up as another gray clone of all these other characters.

And every goddamn episode is oriented around these bloated angstdriven decisions and there's absolutely no place for anything except for constant despair and crybabyism.

Every episode we have to watch the characters having some deep, innermonologue about just how scared they are of their enemy and how they want to protect everything and blablablabla. And then some more angst and pussyism, and when you see something actually happen and you are just about to be immersed, then somebody who we dont care about die or have their hipweapons destroyed and we have to care about them. It just never ends. 9 episodes in a row with this really sucks your brainability to comprehend relevant information dry.

The only way of really knowing that any character have some kind of character trait is another character outright saying it.

Maybe it's the format on the Anime that just make these monologues inefficient or that it's paced differently than the manga. Ive read a few chapters ahead and it just might work out, because it seems alot better when you can just cancel out all these neverending words.

Jean is the character to look to for character development. He actually gets a pretty good arc. Starting out as someone who only wants to save his own neck, he grows into someone with potential for actual leadership skills.
Armin pretty much gets over his self-doubt in the next episode. Not sure how you could call him inept though, he's already shown himself to possess a good tactical mind in previous episodes.

Anyways, pet theory time. I'm thinking the Titans were some kind of biological weapon and the walls were built in what used to be Germany. Hence all the Germanic names and such. Excepting Mikasa of course, whose people we've been told arrived as refugees from the orient.
