you guys don't even realise, this guy was trying to get laws enacted that would let the police arrest you simply for being around someone they didn't like. It's a far bigger event than even gamers realise.

Now to get rid for Stephen ****ing Conroy next.

You have got to be kidding me. Screw what someone said above, first world country or no, that sort of thing deserves death threats. That is a truly massive violation of human rights. That is around the point you start creating armed resistance groups.

EDIT: Of course he is retiring now, so it is effectively irrelvant. It's a good thing violence wasn't necessary.

I think guys, that he may have already stepped down as Attorney General! He is only going to stay as some other minister for 4 years, then he is retiring. This means, that as long as the next AG for South Australia isn't as retardo as Michael Atkinson, we should be level with the rest of the world pretty soon.
Close.

For those that don't follow, the Front Bench are the Members of Parliament that hold ministerial (or shadow ministerial) portfolios. Members of either the governing party or the major opposition without a portfolio or other position are Back Benchers. Independents and Minor Parties form the Cross Bench.

So Mr Atkinson is retiring from the position of Attorney General of South Australia, which is a ministerial position, but remaining in parliament until the next election as a back bencher.

As for why he hasn't just retired outright... Well, his party have just gone through an election and at best can hope to form government with a 2 seat majority, although a 1 seat majority is most likely. If Atkinson retired, his electorate would be forced (go compulsory voting!) back to the polls for a by-election and early by-elections called on any reason other than health tend to go against the sitting party, so that would risk the 1 seat majority in parliament his party has.

Clear as mud? Good.

We will have a new AG as soon as the new ministers are announced, and Atkinson will be nothing more than an ordinary MP for the next 4 years, until he retires completely.
Unfortunately, Atkinson is the powerbroker of the SA ALP's Right faction so he'll be involved in a lot of the factional squabbling for ministerial portfolios. He won't be a frontman anymore but people shouldn't expect his influence to vanish. Fortunately for gamers, his influence will be more effective at pushing the ALP Right's agenda rather than his own 'moral' agenda.

The other interesting thing to see will be is if he was talking through his hat or not about other state A-G's being anti-R18 but being quiet about it.

"And yea, the young soccer player spoke down from on high, causing the Atkinson to feel much guilt, and this was bad. Atkinson then resolved to step down from politics by 2014, and all rejoiced, none more so then the gamers of the world, and it was good."

I propose this verse to be added to the First Holy Instruction Manual of The Sacred Church of Gaming.

Well, let's just hope his successor is a little more open-minded.

Am I forgetting anything?

...Oh yeah.

maybe the poll results finally highlighted how out of touch with the community he was becoming. it seems if he had his way SA would be a police state. city of churches and shoot on site 9pm curfew?

lets hope they do put the r rating through. it won't make much difference for the most part, games like fallout 3 COULD be re rated to R18+ which in all honesty is what it should carry. south park movie has less f-bombs dropped and it only scraped through as m15+.

the biggest benefit for me would be local gaming studio's could finally make and market games to adults, the government finally taking the games industry seriously could lead to tax exemptions and grants to help studio's get underway. an ignored aussie industry may finally get the attention it deserves

What is this? Good news? I've almost forgotten what it sounds like. I mean, Atkinson has done more harm than just censor games, so this is truly something to celebrate.

Isn't it, Captain Falcon? [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBwwUfuJZr8]
Playing these two together is actually really satisfying =D

Thanks for killing my childhood just a little more, Vaccine.

But at least we'll soon have games that allow that kind of gore? :D

Michael "beat me with a Wine magazine" Rann deserves as much if not more blame than Atkinson. He had every chance to rein Atkinson in but didn't either because he agreed with Atkinson, prefered Atkinson getting more bad press than he did, or was afraid of factional fallout. All of which means Rann was a snake, a weasel or a jellyfish.
